Hello, I am glad to find this forum, as I had some questions about motorcycles in China. I plan on working there next year (mostly in Yunnan prov.) and was thinking of shipping my bike or possibly buying one there in Beijing and riding it across China. Is that possible? What is the cost of a BMW650GS there compared to shipping my beemer from the States? How big of a hassle is it to get tags, insurance etc. and I have heard that bikes are not allowed in many cities, is that true? What about service and part availability for beemers? Thanks for your help!!! and I look forward to meeting some of you at the iron horse in Beijing.

First, the bad news - it is 99.99% impossible to bring a used BMW into China, legally.

Second, the good news - you can buy a 650GS here.

Oh, more bad news - a new 650GS will be outrageously expensive

But some good news - there are some legal 650GS for sale in Beijing. They are used, but decent. Look through this forum and you'll find one or two. I think a member called pennstlong has one or two legals ones for sale. Also, another member (chinabiker) is the definitive expert on BMWs in Beijing. He can certainly help you out, and he's very approachable.
