Lifan TMS 200
Someone is selling a 2007 Lifan TMS 200 near my house. All of the plastics have been removed and the tank has rust in it. With the use of a funnel and some clean gas, the bike actually starts. The electrical seems to be all there too. The plastics look banged up after a drop but the only other damage seems to be a bent clutch handle. As I was looking at the bike yesterday all stripped down, I couldn't help but think what a cool café racer it might make. It has a title so there are no registration issues. A new tank, a café racer style seat and a few custom odds and ends and it might be something nice. The kid needs money too, so I think I can get it cheap. Any thoughts? Anyone done this with a Lifan? I know these 200cc motors are common and run well. The bike would only serve as a summer weekend cruiser.

Re: Lifan TMS 200
They are basically a dual sport, a dirt bike frame.
Here is one on eBay….

This one actually looks to have been made off a dual sport? But the frames are likely the same.

Re: Lifan TMS 200
You could get a tank from China so cheap, lots of version of tanks.

Re: Lifan TMS 200
The question I always had about doing that would be about the instruments, the bikes come with a tachometer, speedo and also a gear position indicator. You could get a new instrument assemblies as well from china, they are also way cheap. But getting one that worked with that bike would be tricky.

Here is a pretty generic looking one that would connect all the existing features that the engine on the bike supports, maybe?

Putting on a round headlight would be easy enough….

I would not offer over 200 for the bike, the parts to convert it over would add up.

Re: Lifan TMS 200
Thank you for the info. That bike on eBay was exactly what I was thinking about. Your offer is spot on too. Not sure if he will go that low though but I will give an update. Cheers!

Re: Lifan TMS 200
TMS is T-Motorsports. They used to sell the Lifan GY-5 bikes that they imported directly from Lifan in China. American Lifan, no longer in business, tried to dominate the Lifan business in the US by saying they were the one and only Lifan distributor in the US. There were many states that plated other sellers of the bike, but some non American Lifan bikes could not be plated in some states. There was nothing wrong with the bikes, btw, but American Lifan did all they could to get other sellers of these bikes to stop selling them by using court injunctions...T-Motorsports was intimidated enough to stop selling them.
The moral; make sure the bike is able to be street plated in NY as it sounds like it currently is not. It might be titled for off-road only.
