Hey guys
Just wanted to start a mod thread for the Saga GY250 machines
Some ideas I am working on are different larger fuel tank, exhaust mods,what will fit for hand guards and anything that is just out right cool enduro stuff that will fit.
Suggestions off where to find stuff would be awsome too.
The first mod I'd suggest for this bike is an extended warranty -- mine is less than 2 weeks old and it's going in for repairs tomorrow for the second time. :eekers:
If you're in the Calgary area, Toys4Boys (no affiliation) has a gear replacement that will increase the cruising speed from around 100 to 120 kph, and they've got a baggage rack for them too.
I took my 2008 Saga in for it's 100km checkup. As I mentioned in another thread a friend and I each bought one at the same time. At only 60km the relay for my turn signals had burnt out, and hers stopped working due to what appeared to be a wiring harness issue. The dealer said they've had a few people come in with the burnt out relay problem, they've got a new more robust relay that can be installed in just a few minutes.
To try and get it to start easier (mine takes a good minute or so for the electric start to get the engine going) the dealer replaced the factory spark plug (which he hinted were not the greatest) with an American-made one (sorry, don't know the brand) and suggested keeping the throttle on at about 5% with the choke out while starting. It does seem to start a bit easier but I do have to either adjust the idle screw up or keep the throttle revved a little for a few minutes to prevent stalling. Ken, I tried holding the throttle all the way out like you suggested but it wouldn't start at all when I did this and stalled immediately if I did it after the bike started -- my fuel mix must be adjusted differently from yours. :S
When I got home from the 100km service, I found my gas tank was leaking. I thought some fuel might have just sloshed out of a vent but in the morning found the tank had all but emptied itself. I didn't see any cracks or punctures in the tank but I am taking it back to the dealer tomorrow and will post the results of their investigation.
Lastly, not really a mod but I found a great protected padlock that fits through the holes in the front wheel's disc (sorry, not sure if that's what it's called) -- call me paranoid but anything I can add to make the bike harder to roll away is a good thing in my books. :) --

Well no fear, my signal relay went in 20 km..LOL
I bet they will warrenty your fuel tank too but I have had way better luck with my saga.At least the problems shows now and you can get the warrenty done asap.
This rack, is it different from the stock one that Saga includes with the bike? If so I'm into buying one.
We don't have too much theft of stuff in Golden but good call on the lock.I bet you need it in Calgary.

It was hold the chock up tight when starting..LOL not the throttle :)
Then feather the throttle.Mine never idles until it warms up either.I need to replace my spark plag also.I did find a aftermarket CDI that is supposed to uo 8-10 % and help but I need to order it and try it out.
Could the hard start be jetting or ignition timing? :confused1:

Whoops, I meant to say that I was pulling the choke all the way out -- not the throttle. :) Early morning posts, you know how it is. ;) CrazyCarl, unfortunately I don't know enough about engines to hazard a guess -- I'd wondered if there's just a lot of cylinder friction which makes it easy to stall out until the cylinder expands a bit as it heats. Maybe it will get better as the piston ring(s) age?
Here's a picture of the new rack (cost was $35), it may be a Saga part but what came on the bike originally struck me as being more passenger hand-holds than anything else. Next week I can post a photo of the originals that are still on my friend's bike for comparison purposes, and she also bought some heated hand grips (I think she said they were from GW Cycle World, $40, and one of the guys at Toys4boys said he'd put them on for around $70). I'll post some info about that too once she gets it all done.
I got my bike back from the shop, they confirmed that it was leaking fuel from the tank's weld seams (directly onto the hot exhaust I might add).
It turns out Saga had issued a recall on the fuel tank but the dealer wasn't aware of it and put the problematic tank on. If you have a Saga, particularly the 250cc 2008 Saga Enduro-style motorcycle, I strongly encourage you to phone your dealer and see if your fuel tank is one of the recalled ones!

Maybe they added the rack to yours and included it in the purchase price? Mine was $1995 including tax/freight/etc and came with the handles/rack shown in the photos on Saga Canada's product page -- here's one of the pics they've got up:

Thats crap...LOL That rack is stock with the machine in the crate.Maybe they just figure they can sell it seperate because they offered such a awsomemly lower price on the bike.I payed way more than what forked out for your bike..LOL
Are you likeing the machine?? I have the smaller sprocket to put on,hopefully it will boost up my top speed without too much torque loss.
Could be, as you say most places charge more for the bike so I'm still coming out ok.
I have been enjoying it and seeing what it'll do. I got the bike up to 100km/h, though it took quite awhile to get up there -- if you're familiar with Calgary, I floored it on the on-ramp to Deerfoot at Memorial Drive and it was just hitting 100kph as I took the off-ramp at 16 Ave. I think for my size (6'1", 185ish pounds), that's the top speed. As a way of getting to & from work it's great because I'm mostly on roads with a limit of <80kph at which the bike excels, but I'm wondering how to coax a bit more speed out of it. Ken, did you like the new sprocket? You do a fair bit of offroading on these... how do you like the trail handling capability?
For the curious, I also found that a full tank of gas gets you around 185 KM before having to switch over to the reserve. I'm at around 350km on the odometer now; the turn signal repair worked, and the replacement gas tank is holding up too. The light bulb on the tach burnt out so I'll have to look at that soon. It's a fun bike and I'm not expecting miracles but I wish it's reliability was better. :S

The tanks was recalled and all dealers were given new ones to replace but whether it was done or not is yet to be said.

Should I get a replacment tank for my 2008 then ? I don't want to be stuck in a pinch if it does decide to leak? Is it possible to id the bike by serial # to tell if it has had a replacement tank put on? My bike was shipped crated and never looked at in prior to me receiving it.

My saga does realy well off road.I do offroad/trail riding but nothing over extreme ( no crazy stuff).I 've been up to 1930 meters and the bike purrs.I wil admit that it is not a major power house but it does torque up anything I want to go up.I find the power balance it nice and I don't tear up to countryside when off road.
I almost bit it last weekend up high in the alpine when a grizzly bear poked it's head out of the berry bushes and scared the crap out of me but the front ABS saved me from punting over the handlebars and I recovered asap and pull out of it.
I think the Saga is a great platform machine for the price,I do think we need to get better shifters and power mods for it like a upgrade cdi,carb,air cleaner ect.I know the stuff is out there but it would be awsome if saga could sell us the upgrades ( make it easyer LOL )
I still have not gotten to change the sprocket.my stock one gets me to 70-80 km and I'm at 6000 rpm.lots of torque

Your tank was probably switched by the dealer. The issue that Darkmoon had is that Toys4Boys took over the stock from a previous dealer. Tanks were there just not put on..He should be good to go!

1. a better shifter lever .Mine feels like it's going to fall off becuase the clamp end needs more spline area to fit on tighter.works ok but just seems a bit to wobbly.
2.Bark busters ( or copy of idea)
3.mod so we can grease the swing arm
4. More engine power mods ( I have been working also on this and will update as I get more info) As best as I can tell the engine is a CG250 zonshen but please tell me if I am wrong.I found that info in the manufatures site.
5.Better speedo assembley.I am going to make a mount for my gps for next year also.
So I just installed a 46 tooth rear sprocket on my 250 and it makes quite a difference for in city driving as well as noticable increasse in the top end.
Good to hear..It's next to be done on my bike.
Just finished upgradeing the CDI and the Coil.Big differance in idle and acceleration quality.
Cold starting is a snap now.
What are you guys seeing for chain strech,I'm adjusted out already so I need to drop some links out of my stock chain.

Here are pictures of the upgrade coil,spark plug ( NGK ) and CDI modual.
I mounted the coil in the same place as the stock unit.I drilled out the mounting hole and attached it with a cap screw and 2 nylock nuts.The Red/Black wire is the CDI power wire and is attached to the coil spade.The ground wire was attached to the coil body.
Placement of the cdi modual was a bit tricky.I put it between the air box and fender.It was a very tight fit, so tight I had to use 2 pry bars to get it in.I will have to see if it stays put in use,but if not I will have to build a bracket at the time.
The increase in voltage is huge.I did compairable no load tests with a spark checker and the results were totaly awsome.
Small weak spark to lightning spark!!!!
The differance was instantly noticeable, Easy starting and very good idle quality
It was a well worth while and well needed upgrade.
I finaly got around to pulling the swing arm off to check why the swing arm has excessive play.What I found was not bad plastic bushings but that the bolt to steel bushing clearance is over .0015 thou and should be like .0004 ish.
So off to the machine shop I went to have some made that are right.I think the bushing ( plastic and steel ) are correct...and that the culprit is the fact bolts are always undersize from the true size.
I will post pictures when I get the new ones from the machine shop.
I am now having all the bushings in the suspension custom made for all the suspension.I was so impressed with the swingarm bushings that the rest been so "shitty" loose was not right.
This should tighten up the bike very nicely.

hi ken , i know its off topic but just had to brag that i went for a ride today in to the blaeberry [iob] . still cold and slippery but quite nice to be able ride this early around here

Got the swing arm back in last weekend with the new machined "link pins" to replace the bolt that contributed to the "clunky" rear suspension.The bolt on the three way link ( from the shock/swing arm/engine) that goes to the swing arm had a incredible amount of play because the bolt used in the assembly did not have enough shoulder to carry over and thru into the other side of the bracket. At that point it was on the treads that are thiner than the rest of the bolt and had a lot of movement.
On the swing arm I ended up having new steel bushings made also to fit the factory axle bolt.This got rid of all the excessive swing arm play
Attachment 1526I just finished installing my new coil and cdi box that I just recieved from toys4boys inAttachment 1525 Calgary. Was a little bit of work but I was able to put all the new parts in the exsiting places so didn't have to modify anytAttachment 1524hing to much. The real pain in the ass was trying to reinstall the gas tank as it didn't want to sit back in place properly. AAttachment 1523fter a nasty cut on the finger and some blood spilt I was able to get it to fit again. Here are some pics I took along the way.Attachment 1522
Hi guys, it's awesome to find some info on these bikes. I bought mine in the spring and have almost 500 km on it now, it feels like it's breaking in a bit now. I've only done a couple minor mods so far, the first was to raise the main needle for the crappy starting and idling problems that seem to be common. I die ground out the mount holes for the headlight to get it out of oncoming traffics eyes. The little acerbis headlight does a pretty good job on there I think. Has anyone done any airbox or exhaust mods?

Just piked up a Saga myself, and am looking to do some work on it. For where I ride the headlight is not going to cut it, does anyone know what type of base the bulb is?
Is there a higher wattage bulb avalible?
I'm also looking to change out the airbox for a pod filter and put a new exhaust in there or gut the stock one. I'm assuming there is no point going bigger than the 30mm carb without getting some more flow out of the head?
As soon as I brought it home I did a new sprocket, plug, and raised the needle a notch but I would like more power if possible.
Ordered a bunch of jets, a UNI filter and a performance CDI today and am looking in an exhaust for it. I'll make changes one at a time too see what effect they have.
Mmm installed the CDI (same one as toys4boys currently sells) and it's missing at idle and seems a little harder to start, will have to look at it further tommorow.
