This follows on from my post concerning the Jetmax 250cc maxi scooter I purchased in mainland China August 2010. In the thread here I complained about the lack of a luggage mount and the ability to fit a rear top-box which is a pretty standard feature on nearly all manner of two wheel modes of transport in mainland China. I had contemplated heading down to Yongkang and hit up Du Rui aka 'Tourfella' who's worked on the mods for the likes of Franki, Plfaezer, Euphonius et al & their Jialing JH600's side pannier boxes etc.
After contacting Du Rui to see if it was possible for him and his team to work from a range of drawings, measurements that I'd provide and me sending the pillion grab rails from my Jetmax down to him, it became obvious that they needed the bike there. After some indecision combined with recent heatwave and the subsequent rain down these parts, I was no closer to getting the fabricating underway let alone completed.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/sinned6...n/photostream/http://www.flickr.com/photos/sinned6...n/photostream/I'd ordered a white ADLO 981 topbox (my fourth) that snap locks on-off a base plate, so I was eager to get this little project underway. Fortunately, I have some good riding mates one of whom has a range of family run factories that work with metals, so the seed was planted. One of them stepped forward and the design, and subsequent fabricating was done over the period of several days.
Attachment 2342
The basics are that we used a 2mm stainless steel plate from which we had cut out a shape that would work the rear section of the two pillion hand rails to which two 20mm diameter steel tubes were arc welded spanning across the rear of the seat. The top one of the two tubes was welded a range of perpendicular and right angle sections of tubing to make effectively a luggage rack. The lower tube was used to create a 90 degree right angle 'T' bar support that helps to reinforce and share of the downward support/load of the luggage rack above (see photos).
Attachment 2343
I didn't bother to spend time cleaning up the welds, since the rack per-se' would be obscured most of the time by either the ADLO mount, or the ADLO top box itself. I just applied about 4-5 layers of silver thermo-acrylic paint to match the pillion grab rails and then bolted the rack on. The bolts meant having to drill four holes into each grab rail and the rubber inserts which we did during the fabrication stage. No biggie, and really the whole design was an easier fabrication in some respects than my initial idea of fabricating completely new grab rails and integrated luggage rack.
Attachment 2341
All in all I think the whole back end of the Jetmax is all the better for the addition of the luggage rack/top box. It seems to take away the rounded aspect of the whale tail rear end, that is so typical of scooter designs in China, that just doesn't suit the Maxi scooter design.
The photos tell the story.
Attachment 2344
So how does the scoot ride?
Actually having the topbox on the rear has changed the behaviour somewhat, she's more settled on rougher surfaces even with the topbox being empty, kind of like damping out the harshness out of the crap roads. There's no weave or anything from the topbox behind me, as some people notice when installing rear topboxes on some scoots/bikes. There's some form of weight transfer which has decreased the downward pressure being exerted by the front wheel, which has meant that the front wheel will wobble slightly side to side when I let go of the handlebars, which does not occur when the topbox is removed. It's not likely as a result of weight, but more the positioning of the topbox slightly aft of the rear wheel. It's not disconcerting at all, and doesn't make any real noticeable or significant changes to the handling characteristics other than when I take my hands of the handlebars at certain speeds.

Re: CFMoto Jetmax 250cc CF250T-6A Scooter Luggage Rack
Really like the engineering of this rack, particularly the little angular strut to the lower lateral bar, which should give it a ton of strength. I'd still be reluctant to carry too much weight in it, since all of the weight will translate into torsional force on the hand rails.
Did you purchase the box inside China? Does it come in black? Can you supply a link?
Nice work, bikerdoc!

Overall I think the rack came out really well, and some of the work getting it fabricated was carried out by myself. I have to give credit though to my mate, and his employee who did the welding. I don't intend to carry much wait as I use the top box for the odd shopping run, or mostly intended for packing with clothing etc for the trips away. The great thing I like about these ADLO boxes is that the can be mounted/unmounted with the turn of a key and push of a button, which allows me to rock up to my destination, unmount the topbox and it becomes my convenient suitcase - so simple and easy. I use the same ADLO 981 boxes on my Jijian scooter and on the Dragstar. The other boxes I have are black, though I have removed the decals/graphics of the one on the Dragstar. ADLO are based in Guangdong, and I've been ordering by phone through a motorcycle accessories type shop from the Hangzhou motorcycle markets that I have built sort of relationship with. Prior I would ride from Ningbo to Hangzhou just to buy these boxes (this is now my 5th ADLO 981 box) and I swear by the quality, and the plastics used is not the typical crap that is so commonly used here - for all and sundry. Cost of the boxes is around 160 delivered to my door, or 150 if I go to the delivery company's base (which is 500m from my home). Check out www.adlo.net

Many thanks for the link, BD. Looks like good quality stuff, and the price is right! Given that the box is so easily removable, would you ever leave it on the bike while, say, you ran into a store or an appointment?
cheers!

No worries. You might find that you can buy the topbox from a dealer up in SH, as I recall seeing a couple of exactly the same model for sale at a couple of the small shops at the SH motorcycle market & a scooter/motorcycle accessory shop in Pudong. If needs be, you can deposit the said funds into my bank acc # and I can place the order for you and have a box (whichever takes your fancy) delivered up to you.
I leave the topbox on my bike(s) frequently (e.g. shopping, eateries etc), remembering that it still requires a key to both unlock it, and as part of the two stage process to unmount it from the said bike. I'm sure the casual observer wouldn't know that the topbox is portable/removable.

Re: CFMoto Jetmax 250cc CF250T-6A Scooter Luggage Rack
Bumping this thread, Bikerdoc, as I was in the Shanghai scootermart today and found several sizes of the Adlo box line for prices between 120 and 160 RMB -- about what you said you paid. They look very good, and I'm merely wondering which size to get. I'd like to have a top box for riding around town when I don't have the big Tourfella side boxes installed. It looks like these boxes are very easy to remove (with the press of a button), but are relatively secure on the bike as long as you've used the key lock.
Is that indeed how they work? Or could they be easily removed while locked? That would be a stupid design.
thanks

Hi Euphonius,
I have several ADLO 981's and can't endorse them highly enough. They are pretty much one of the biggest ADLO topboxes they make, but the one fited on the Jetmax doesn't appear all that big, since the Jetmax has a "whale tail" rear-end. ADLO also make a smaller version of the 981, which is a 981A. check out www.adlo.net
When the topbox has the hinge lock locked in position then the release button cannot be compressed - so the topbox can't be removed from the base plate. If the hinge mechanism isn't engaged properly, or at all, then the button can be compressed (which will subsequently allow removal). Irrespective I think they're excellent value for money topboxes, which a plastic composite material that can with-stand the rigours of Chinas roads and trails.
Incidentally we might have an experienced foreign rider buying a new JH600 down here shortly (I was showing him the Jialing and MCM JH600 related webpages today).

Re: CFMoto Jetmax 250cc CF250T-6A Scooter Luggage Rack
Thanks for that ringing endorsement, BD. The boxes look great. I think I'll go for the biggest one, though it's a bit tall. Boxier than the rounded models. Will a helmet fit inside?
glad to know the JH600 is finding customers. would love to see Jialing build a long-term business around that bike. It's good they have ready markets with the PLA and police, which should keep the production volume high, but this does not ensure they will start to get better at development and marketing. that of course requires a growing consumer market.
thanks again!

Yes, the 981 (as in my various photos of my rides) can hold one helmet and a little more, though anything else contained inside the box needs to not be on the bottom. Agree totally with you, on the idea for long term survivability and overall viability of the JH600 as an acceptable China mid size bike. I'd hope though that Jialing would listen to and utilise any customer feedback and adopt the same where appropriate in their manufacturing etc. I'm off to CFMoto this coming week, with the Jetmax (my mate will also ride his as well) so that we can have a few small things sorted, and discuss with them some ideas on improvements etc. CFMoto are manufacturing a 650cc road bike which will hit the local market soon. There's discussion about a 800cc cruiser style motorcycle with CVT auto transmission as well which I hope to clarify at the meeting.

I have the biggest Adlo mounted on my JH600 as the top box. It probably fits 2 helmets inside. It is voluminous, strong, and inexpensive. Highly recommended.
I need to run to a meeting now. Will show you a picture later.

Re: CFMoto Jetmax 250cc CF250T-6A Scooter Luggage Rack
The Adlo I installed on my JH600 is Adlo 982, claiming 42L in volume. I had used another similar sized one for the GN250 I owned previously, the 928, which is more streamlined but not as tall as 982. I opt for 982 due to its height, allowing 2 helmets to be stored inside, and its color, which is black if you peel off its accent stickers/stripes.
Here is a couple of pictures:

Here it is: http://www.joinbike.com/bbs/viewthre...extra=page%3D1
By the way, am I getting myself or this forum into potential legal troubles if I just graft a picture to here from a differnt forum? Maybe I should have just provided the hyperlink in the first place.
-
Re: CFMoto Jetmax 250cc CF250T-6A Scooter Luggage Rack
Thanks, Milton. Interesting JH600 thread.
As for legal dangers, I would not hesitate to grab a picture, but I would also always include a URL, as you've just suggested. That way we don't pull pageviews away from the other site, in this case joinbike.com, but rather, we increase their pageviews.
I doubt there would be any significant legal risks, and I'm sure someone in this forum will correct me if I'm wrong!
cheers

Re: CFMoto Jetmax 250cc CF250T-6A Scooter Luggage Rack
Oh, and getting back to the thread at hand, I picked up a Adlo 928 top box at scootertown here in Shanghai yesterday for 150 rmb. I thought the 982 was just a bit too big, given that I have sideboxes for long journeys. Though I'm not riding at the moment (doctor's orders), I will certainly want to keep giving TLC to my bike.
cheers

I can never have my top box too big. It's not always fully packed, but very frequently so. Besides, Adlo is sturdy enough to protect your bike if it takes a fall, in which case the wide width of 928 comes in handy. I have a few scratch marks on my box to prove it.

Hi jefkazac2000
Since I posted my review of the Jetmax, I have upgraded and added many items to my Jetmax to suit my wants and needs. The rear luggage rack that I had fabricated was replaced by the rear luggage rack that CFMoto manufacture. This meant that I also needed to buy the pillion hand / grab rails which have an additional moulded piece that is different from the standard hand / grab rails. The luggage rack is an alloy one piece unit that looks good and has performed well for the past 7 months that I have had it installed. Your dealer that you are buying the Jetmax from may not know that there is a luggage rack option from CFMoto for the Jetmax, but I can assure you there is. I only found out that CFMoto had a luggage rack for the Jetmax when I visited their manufacturing operation in Hangzhou and saw the completed Jetmax's off the assembly line with the racks on. I then promptly ordered one and the two new pillion hand / grab rails required to complete the install, which I did myself. The luggage rack installs with 4 hex bolts and lock nuts plus washers into the rear moulding of the left and right side pillion hand / grab rails, so you will have to get them too, unless your Jetmax comes with them pre-installed.
Here's some photos...

Good luck. If your dealer say they can't get one, then it might be that the distributor or manufacturer says it's not available (crazy things happen in China). Let me know and I can get you one, if need be, you'd just have to wire me the funds etc. We can chat some more if that is needed. Remember that you will need the luggage rack as well as the left and right side pillion hand/grab rails unless your grab rails already have the extra moulded section at the back. The moulded section I refer to has two holes for each hand/grab rail.

Hi Bikerdoc
I finally receive my Jetmax today. Beautiful machine ....
but my dealer seems not to be able to provide me a luggage rack from CF Moto. As you have me propose, would it be possible for you to send me one ( with pillion hand / grab rails )directly from China ? I will naturally wire you the funds.
Thank you in advance

Hi Jefkaxac2000Co
Congratulations on your newly acquired Jetmax. There are many things that I would suggest you look at upgrading many of which I have already outlined in this thread, but many other small things that I've not. For example, I've upgraded the rear shock absorbers to a dual adjustable preload/dampening spring with cartridge, so that now I have some adjustment on the arse end. I've swapped out the rear tyre for a Bridgestone 150/70-14 rear and a Pirelli Diablo Scooter 120/70-14 front. Much grippier and the rear tyre lifts the back end a few centimetres. Since the arse end of the scoot sits that much higher, I welded a couple little 2cm tabs to the legs of the centre stand. I didn't alter the sidestand at all. I played round with an aftermarket exhaust, which sounded nicer and gave better low down performance, but have swapped back to the heavier and quieter original muffler as the scoot did experience some diffcult starting at times during the summer. I'm not sure if this was because of the way the new muffler may have affected the EFI or if it was the humidity and high temperatures having an affect on the EFI?
Upgrade the pitiful standard halogen 35w lights with HID Xenons... even 25w make a big difference, and I also swapped out the little park light bulbs for some 4w LED's. I also added a small seat squab little bit like a gel seat, mainly to give me a little more height as I felt I sat too low into the scooter. That combined with the aforementioned larger rear tyre upgrade means I sit 4-5cm taller on the soot over stock standard. It makes huge difference and an improvement IMO.
So many other upgrades... even the mirrors I swapped out twice and now have the mirrors that come with the CFMoto 650NK. Watch out though as the right hand mirror has a left hand thread. I might make a list of all the changes I've added or made.
To your question, that would be no problem if your dealer can't get you the combined luggage rack pillion grab rails combo. Just let me know, if you want to go ahead with it, and I'll check out prices for you. Just be aware it is vacation here and I'm on holiday and likely won't be in a position to do anything for a month or more. Add to the that the time for me to get what you need then arrange shipping from here and you are likely looking at 3 months before you get it. PM me if you want me to look into this upon my return from vacation, and we can discuss payment etc.
I'm hopeful you will have as much enjoyment out of your Jetmax as I do. Not sure if I mentioned already, but there is a newer model CF250T-8 called a Jetlux, based around the running gear of the Jetmax, but quite different aesthetics. Some nice innovative ideas, like the two part opening system of the seat, has nice LEDs and a different headlight design. Smaller 13' wheels though and doesn't offer the same level of weather protection.
PM me about your luggage rack.

No problem, just let me know if I can help. About the battery, it's not easy to get to... but if you get down and look behind the front wheel underneath the front fairing, crouching down or having the bike up on a lift - you will see a panel with two small screws tucked away in behind the front wheel at about the level of the top of the front mud guard. Use a Phillips/PK head screw driver and undo the screws and there you will find the battery. If you find yourself with a flat battery, remember that you can open the little storage glove compartment. Look over to the right side and you should find the white plastic fused link holder. Open that holder so you expose the cylindrical fuse. Connect a battery charger to one of the connectors on one end of the fuse and then find an earthing point for the earth lead of the battery charger. This method is much easier way of recharging the battery. I use this method often when I'm not using the Jetmax for several days or more. I connect a trickle charger to keep the battery "topped up"
Trying to get down and into the battery compartment otherwise is not an easy task.
