(No-)Bike Night in Shanghai
Calling all Shanghai denizens! Wrangler and I are meeting tomorrow night (Friday 18 February) at Boxing Cat Sinan to sample their recent brews and talk about motorcycles.
All MCMers and friends are welcome to join us -- with the caveat that you shall leave your steed at home. Boxing Cat brews average 5-6% and go as high as 10% so you'll be in no condition to ride after even a pint or two. And there's no need to remind all of the current rain and cold. Hypocrite that I am, I'll likely arrive by bicycle, albeit with helmet and lights.
Location:
Sinan Mansions, Unit 26A
519-521 Fu Xing Road Central
Tel: 021-6426-0360
Fax: 021-6426-0362
We're gathering at 7. Join us for a nightcap if you've got supper plans.
:goodtime:
cheers!

Re: (No-)Bike Night in Shanghai
I'll pop in if get back from qingpu in time, or at all. I'm going to pick up my license out there in the afternoon, but haven't decided if i'll come back to shanghai or go straight to suzhou to pick my beloved CJ750, which has got no love from me for 3 months...
I'll let you know anyway!

Re: (No-)Bike Night in Shanghai
OK, so I've heard from wrangler, felix, motokai and ryanjpyle -- all confirmed or semi-confirmed.
How about you Milton? Fred? dewsnap? braillce?
Now I've done an unscientific search for Shanghai members, and, astonishingly, have come up with a rather long list. Here, apart from those listed above and in no particular order, are those who have said at one time or another they were in Shanghai:
VinX
Jalgo
shanghaifingers
seanic
tombaxers
nostalgie
tfc
tony.p
astroboy66
maxiu
1victoria
iw84u
nuhaus
marco
yangtsepete
benlaowai
iamcanjim
shanghailoz
shanghaisideways
nacer
There's also GRF_Pete and GRF_Hans, but they are lost in Laos somewhere and hence excused.
Apologies to anyone I've left out!
cheers!

Re: (No-)Bike Night in Shanghai
Hey Euphonius, great idea but unfortunately I have plans for tonight already. I hope to be able to make it next time. It's a pity, we could have celebrate me getting the licence today ! ;-))
Went to Boxing Cat at Sinan Mansion this wednesday for a guys night with some friends, I recommend their Right Hook brew (blonde), their Winter Warmer (dark), but didn't like the India pale ale, too bitter for me... Wanted to order their Sucker Punch just after the Right Hook, to stay in the boxing thing you know, but they didn't have it. ;-))
Drink one for me guys, enjoy !

Pleased to announce that andre555 from Kunming will be joining us tonight at Boxing Cat...
Yes, Milton, I'll bring a courier bag for my barkbusters. I'm bringing my new charger to loan to Motokai.
And Fred, someday all beer will be as good (and bitter) as Boxing Cat's IPA!
cheers

Re: (No-)Bike Night in Shanghai
Thanks to you André for making the effort to join us. Aside from the smoke, the noise, the high-octane tipple and the two svelte distractions at the adjacent table, it was a great start to what I hope will become a tradition. As spring arrives, my preference would be somewhere outdoors where we can part our bikes, nosh on great street food and watch the distractions walk by. The old Wujiang Lu street market would have been great. Is there anything comparable in Shanghai since Wujiang Lu was harmonized?
thanks again to all who came: Wrangler, Felix, Ryanjpyle, Andre555, Milton, and Wrangler's two buddies -- Gail and the guy who was on the phone pretty much all evening.
stupidly, none of us thought to make a photograph. yes, the beer was good!
cheers

Hmmm.... as they say throughout the webosphere... "this thread is useless without pics".
And I'm referring to the svelte distractions :lol8:
Cheers!

Hope we can do another one of these when we're back in Shanghai next month (or so...maybe 2 months...). The new BC sounds good, i live right nextdoor to the one on Fuxing and Yongfu and was there 2 nights before we left on the trip to provide support for several friends trying the 12 pint challenge! good times, and hope to meet you all soon.

Re: (No-)Bike Night in Shanghai

Calling all Shanghai denizens!
Calling all Shanghai denizens!
Though the weekend weather looks great for an overnight outing, and some folks are out of town, there have been expressions of interest in meeting this weekend for a lubeless, rubberless and indeed bikeless evening of social lubrication here in Shanghai. My preference is Saturday night.
Activities are not limited to the following:
:gun_bandana::wheelchair::gun_bandana::wheelchair: :gun_bandana::wheelchair:
:crider888::crider888:
:seesaw_smilie::seesaw_smilie::seesaw_smilie:

:beerbust::beerbust:
:swords: :swords::swords: :swords:
and, of course,
:goodtime: :goodtime:
:goodtime: :goodtime:
Location? Well, Kaiba Tap Room on the north edge of Tianzifang is having it's Grand Opening on Saturday starting from 4 p.m., with the first two drinks allegedly free. So, well, that seems an obvious choice!
I'm partial to Jackie's Beer Nest, so perhaps we could migrate there for drinks No. 2 through N. Other suggestions gratefully accepted, and could/should include a feed session.
Roll call please! Anyone interested besides Clegg, Victor and me?

Re: (No-)Bike Night in Shanghai
Man, I'm so jealous! The idea of a decent beer is almost thrilling now. The last time I had a Guinness was in HK. (To our Chinese friends; forgive us, but TsingTao is a little lightweight, original gravity-wise).
God knows I racked up a pretty hefty tab there, maybe it's a good thing I couldn't be there. Still sounds awesome!

You can brew your own, and it's far superior to commercial swill. PM me.

Shanghai (No-)Bike Night
Tuesday 10 January (yes, that's today)
9 p.m.
Jackie's Beer Nest 杰克的酒窝
82 Zhaozhou Lu, Luwan District
卢湾区肇周路82号
It's just off Xizang Nan Lu, south of Fuxing Zhong Lu. Hefei Lu actually turns into Zhaozhou Lu, strangely enough. If you see the E-Mart, it's across the street and another 50m to the west.
If you need further directions, call Jackie at 138 1650 2260.
Very sorry for the short notice!
cheers

Re: (No-)Bike Night in Shanghai
Calling all Shanghai denizens!
Some of you may recall that Andre555 of Kunming recently extricated himself from China's clutches and rebased himself with his wife and infant to Germany. But he's here in Shanghai this week visiting his wife's hometown, and we've been trying to schedule a meetup. Limited time offer, and I'm proposing tomorrow (Thursday) evening for drinks and perhaps more for our MCM merry band. If you plan to drink, kindly leave your steed at home. It's going to be raining anyway...
One possible venue would be the Dongbei dumpling place at Tianzifang where we feted Lulu a couple of months back, on Jianguo Lu just east of Ruijin Nan Lu. Great food and cheap beer, with the option of stumbling upstairs to Kaiba Tap Room for real beers afterwards.
I'll be thirsty by six.
Any takers? Let's show André some love!
cheers!

Re: (No-)Bike Night in Shanghai
Darn, darn, darn this rain!
I would love to join you guys to meet you for the first time, but tomorrow Thursday end of day is the day I am supposed to go pick up my plated bike at the registration office (already been postponed for a technical issue, dealership had to issue a new ownership certificate). So I will have to pass on this first opportunity to put faces to the names. Raincheck. Horrible pun.
But boy, I am so p.o.'ed. My first ride in Shanghai on a bike that I have no experience on, and it has to be in the friggin rain!!! Darn, darn and darn again. This is begging for sh*t to happen.
The only bright spot is that I live in HongQiao, only a 10 min slow ride from the registration office on Hami Lu. I guess I will just have to go reeeaaal slow, even if it takes me half an hour. With a bit of luck, it will not be raining at that particular time (five-ish). If it is, then I might wait it out or even walk the bike.
Any tips? Yes I know, avoid the white markings on the ground. Any others?
Leaving my bike there (or anywhere) overnight is not an option. I'd rather walk the effing bike.

Dear DipStick,
What time are you doing this pickup? Would be happy to come join you, if only to give moral support!
cheers!

Re: (No-)Bike Night in Shanghai
Mighty generous of you, Euph!
Unfortunately, I do not have an exact time yet. Our vehicle person at work said she will let me know around noon at what time in the afternoon the bike will be ready (she is the one dealing with the fixer). I requested that it be at about 5pm, which would barely allow me to leave work downtown at about 4pm, get home, drop the suit and get in gear, and either have my wife drive me there or take a cab. (On a related note, I just measured the distance on Google Earth: it's only 1.7 km from the reg office to my compound.)
However, at this point, I have not had any confirmation that his scheduling works for the fixer. I would hate to have you come for nothing if another stupid delay occurs (you would not believe the crappy reason why we had to delay from the original schedule of Tuesday this week!).
How about this: I will take you up on your kind offer, but let's get in touch in late morning so that I can update you on whether and when the pick-up is happening tomorrow. I'll PM you my mobile number.
Cheers,
DipStick
