Amazing! I think the Jialing folks wouldn't even recognize their own bike! Very curious to know how the new wheels perform, and what you'll be doing to compensate for the smaller diameter of the rear wheel. Those tires mean business!
Oh, and please give two paragraphs on yesterday's ride, though this will engender more intense feelings of envy considering the beautiful weather here and the fact that I'm still bikeless. Did you get off road at all?
AW,
Any issue adjusting the front fender to fit the new 21 inch wheel?
DT
Hi JKP,
no need to compensate the smaller rear wheel. This (17" and 21") is a common dual sports set-up as you can find it on a F650GS Dakar or also my old R80GS Basic. It's a compromise. The 18" rear goes for real off-road purpose bikes - that's not the JH600. I know, Franki will say again that it's hard to get 17" tires in China... but who says China supposed to be easy?
Nothing special about yesterday ride. Had to dial in the carb on the XTR a bit. Just zooming around in the neighborhood... swapping bikes. Man, it's like going from a GSA to a mountain bike when I change from my JH to the XTR. I'll write some more on the wheel and sprocket later in the report. Need to upload the pictures first.

Dwarfted may be BUT tall. Had to lower it a bit until my friend here gets used to riding again...

Sharp eyes TexasAggie. Sure there were some issues. I compromised a bit since it was late night when I was working on that. It's OK temporary. A design for a nice CNC part is already on the way. Will show pictures later. However, to tell it upfront - I will stay for the time being with the lower fender. I compared the look to the high - motocross style fender but it just doesn't look right. So I figured:
If this bike looks good - and it does...

...then my JH600 shouldn't be too far off...

...and now that it is almost finished I like it like that (look how happy the guy is on his new set of wheels).

I agree with you completely on the low fender vs high. I think your bike looks great. I am finding it difficult to have patience awaiting delivery of my bike. Appreciate your sharing your R&D work as always. Enjoy your upcoming ride.

Yeh. I compared ground clearances and seat heights.
Regarding looks of the bikes I say that even though I have adored KTM bikes and especially those old Adventure KTMs, that new model with road racing style plastic fairings.. eeew I would fer sure rather buy that black Xingyue :lol8: (name lol) XY400-2 than that KTM UFO. http://www.mychinamoto.com/forums/sh...ll=1#post13215
KTM UFO - that may be - BUT... ever ridden one oft those 990s? Very addictive I can tell ya. The UFO look is one thing, which doesn't make me switch over from GS boxers... Based on your taste you must be rather in my age-group I guess. One thing we have to get used to: The XT500 times are over. Material has technically improved a lot and we all appreciate quality. Therefore we sometimes need to compromise a bit and get away from the old looks. Not really true because having said that, this is the ride I built recently with my friends in Germany and went to Iceland on it:
