The 沪A plate is not the only option in Shanghai; many riders opt for the 沪C plate, which is far less expensive (maybe 15k these days, and transferable). With the 沪C you are technically forbidden to enter all downtown areas but you are fully legal for riding outside the Inner Ring road and anywhere else in China where motorcycles are allowed. The 沪C is not an option if you live downtown and want to use your bike for daily riding, but if your bike is for getting out of town the 沪C can be an excellent option, as long as you have a reliable place to park it. The fine for riding inside the Inner Ring is 200 RMB and possibly some points on your license.
Both the 沪A and 沪C are tradeable, transferable assets, and they have been appreciating. I'm leery of buying a 沪A plate for 150k or more, but if next year it's worth 250k, then people will call you financial genius. (Not sure what they'll call you if the bubble pops....)
cheers!
well too risky!
since i plan to get a flat french concession and the A plate is out of the question i will stick to the plan on getting a race track only bike.
of course only if there is hope that track days are returning!
if there are any efforts or negotiations to bring them back, i will happily support them!
