the Jialing homepage says that the magneto of the JH600 brings 330W. If this is the performance then its a bit lower than a F650GS, which brings 400W. So maybe I need to watch the power if using electric heated clothes or a beer cooler... :goodtime:
To monitor the battery condition I am planning to implement that volt-meter into the dashboard. There are some pretty nice JH600 modifications being done by Chinese riders. Check out the pictures on Baidu.com

I changed the original Chinese spark-plug against an Iridium alternative, which promises that the engine runs better on low rpm.

Looking at the old plug one can see black burn marks not only at the electrodes but also at the tread. I didn't take off the head but it seems that not only the top part of the plug with the electrodes but also a part of the thread reaches far into the combustion chamber? Does anyone know if this is normal?

I think a plug should sit in the head like this? Even it does not hit the piston or valves it still can disturb flow of air/fuel mixture during loading and discharging when it "stands out" too much, or not?

I'm long way from being an expert but that old plug looks brown around the ceramic too, therefore too much heat xfer somewhere. You may need a hotter plug and a slight alteration to timing all else being right.

Agree with the plug color. But to judge that, the engine needs to run on "operating condition" for some time before taking the plug out. Guess we did some short runs only in this case. Will monitor that later.

I don't think it is a major issue but my feeling is, that the plug needs to look like in the other pic (post #34) I just posted and should not "stand out" too much inside of the combustion chamber to help the flow.

Yes, it's normal. Most of my plugs come out looking like yours. Some heads don't have threads at the very bottom which allows a bit of carbon to build up on the plug, some other heads will allow a couple of exposed threads inside the combustion chamber.
I think the brown on the ceramic could just be poor quality of materials used in the OEM plug, or dirty water burning off after washing the bike or trail riding.

I might have stuck my nose too much into tuning literature and this issue might be really irrelevant on this low compression engine. I haven't seen many heads of CMs from inside. Thanks for your explanation. Once I have to open the head of my JH600 - hope this will not happen too soon - then I'll post some pix.

I am new to these bikes so have to ask a dumb question: what is the fitting on the back wheel that rises up from the swing arm and looks like a weird extra guard? Seems to me that in the bush that would fill with twigs and mud and jam up!

It is actually a combined part functioning as chain guard and spray-protection. BMWs have it as well (except for the chain guard):

Before traffic rules of the EU were applied in Germany, we had an old regulation, saying, that the edge of the spray protection of rear wheels must not be higher than max. 150mm above the wheel axle. The new regulations in the EU mentions only "sufficient spray protection". I guess there are other non EU countries with regulations similar to the old one in Germany. Jialing wants to export those bikes so I guess that's the reason for this rather ugly piece of plastic.
As to my JH600 - it's surely on the list to be removed...

Thanks mate, my guess was right - an ugly bit of crap designed to suit bureaucrats and make us crash in the bush miles away from any help! Good luck with it, the replacement would be a priority for me and it looks neat too! That BMW looks ugly as it is, however I must admit a neighbour has a rare, small, sideways engined BMW that he rescued from a Pacific Island somehow ( a ship's captain used to race around his ship's deck on it in the 1950's) and it just goes and goes and goes, the clock wound round at least twice they reckon. He has done a few across Australia trips on it as well, so very reliable. I hope the JH600 ends up being as good, it is looking more and more like an attractive bike as you work on it - thanks for being a pioneer!

Not sure if my JH600 is gonna be a match but its the only bigger bike available for me to ride in China. Any the modification project is fun. No worries, I'll flick that plastic stuff as soon as my wife release some more Moolah for me to play with.

wow, must be my lucky day today since i stumbled across this forum and especially this (and the Qingqi 200) thread!
i was useing zhongshen 200gy on my tours in tibet, sichuan and yunnan but got ride of them last year and looking for new bikes this year. JH 600 for two up and the Qingqi´s seem a good choice ( i hope )
and with all the modification info´s here the jh600 can make real good rides i guess. hope i can meet up with my "neighbors" pfaelzer and frank (and maybe more of you guys here) when in hongkong next time! hi from austria - heinrich

As usual, nothing fits well from the beginning. The guard is fixed with pegs, which are going right into the tube ends of the handle-bar. However, the JH 600 has got a thread welded into the tube ends, to hold the handle-bar weights. This has to be removed first.

Some drilling work is doing the job.
First fit test shows, that the levers are touching the guards inside slightly, when fixing the guards to the bar the weights removed.

But if the peg is pulled out a bit, then it seems to be fine. So we need to make a 10mm wide aluminum spacer.

Now the assembly looks good with enough space for the levers. However, I am thinking of increasing the diameter of the spacer to match the diameter of the handle grip.

Update
I have added some details on request of readers.
As seen above, I decided to drill out the threat inside of the bar tube (M8!!!) to use the peg, which came together with the hand-guard set. The reason is, that these pegs do have a lock, so that the hand-guards will not move, during impact. Here the lock on the picture:

I also got a new "spacer" between the guard and the handle bar. Using this spacer makes the hand_guard fit much better on the bar. I bought three different set of hand-guards to find one which fits well. ChinaV bought even more to get a satisfying solution for his bike. Not such a big deal. The Guangzhou motorcycle part makret provides plenty at good prices.

I will be traveling for business during the next two weeks (USA - weekend we will be riding Harleys to Death Valley...:riding:). So I hope when I come back I can show you pictures of the new look with removable boxes and all.
If time allows I will also start a new post on body work. The bike is a bit wide when riding in standing position so we will try to make some new plastics in fibre-glass, gonna be fun.

I usually ride my 1150GSA up in Oregon and Washington but this time business brings me more to the South. Let's see if we get to Scotty's Castle but we surely want to see the Badwaters Basin Salt Flats - lowest elevation... Quite excited about this.

I just arrived back from USA. Had some work to do there but also got the chance of riding 4 days from San Diego up to Death Valley and back with my wife and two friends on rental HDs. Ride, landscape and people - everything a great experience. Weather was great too, even though at times a bit cold for some of us.
I got some news from my bike and would like to share progress. As mentioned before, I sent the bike to a factory to get some jobs done. Unfortunately my time is limited to work on the bike so I am very happy to have Franki and his friends helping me out and also sending me progress pictures.
Here the first update on the luggage carrier system:
When traveling I prefer aluminum-boxes so I can lock things away, well knowing, that the bike could be lighter with soft-luggage. The idea is to completely remove the cast-alloy stock luggage rack and replace it with a new system – a bit more adventure-like.
Basic functions should integrate a top luggage carrier, detachable boxes and also detachable pannier rack so the top carrier can be used without panniers and side frame (and all should be still good looking).

Looks good - side parts are removable in case no boxes are needed. The aluminum plate for the rear luggage carrier is not yet on.

The side box holders are bolt-on, which is fine for me. We will have to find out if these bolts are getting loose when riding or not. Looks quite solid.

Here you can see exactly what I suggested the luggage rack should look like. Removable in case you want to ride without boxes. Its bolt on, which is fine for me. Take a look at the aluminum luggage carrier. Nice job and good looking:

Some of you might know this fixing system. This gives also some flexibility of positioning of the panniers by simply moving the holder.

Hi, here some more details on the panniers. The dimensions are as follows:
42 liters per box
42cm X 25cm X 40cm L X W X H including the cover.
The covers have a seal to prevent water penetrating the box. It looks like this:

The box comes with locks too. They seem to be a little weak-ish. Let's see over the time how they do. No big deal to change them to bigger/stronger ones.

UPDATE!
Just received a nice pair of inner bags, matching in dimensions the the new aluminum panniers. The bag factory even put the logo on the straps... nice job. I really like to travel with those bags because you can easily carry the content to the tent or room ant the end of a ride. They come with a map compartment as well and shoulder strap.

I am quite happy with the project. It is all being done by some friends but not near to where I work. I see they have a pretty good understanding of what is needed but I also understand, that after testing there might be some adjustments necessary. This is China - no big deal to fix things. The project is quite some fun for me and I don't mind if this goes on for some time. Luckily I have some other bikes to ride until the JH is back.

Guten abend (morgen?) AW, yes I have followed and enjoyed this thread with a smile, you are doing what many of us would if we had time and money (and all those handy chinese mates about).
My girlfriend is too lazy and scared to ride herself but has a fatalistic trust in me. As soon as I get a full license we will head off for a few kilometers into the bush, not fast as my present bike is only 200cc.
My thoughts (not criticism) are that personally I would move the carriers back just six inches or so further than you and angle them in line with the narrowing shape of the bike, thus giving leg room for a passenger and also allowing a lower angle through long curves (which after all is the thrill the lasses want from us and an excuse for them to hold on tight ...). Mind you, I found out a few days ago it isn't all that easy to lean fast with knobbies if you don't have a berm to guide you, had to straighten up in the middle of a bend and take to the grass!
What is next? Long-range tank and sat nav?

afternoon now in Fuzhou. Be careful with leaning too much over...:naughty:... there is always the unexpected.
On most of the roads in China, riding at high speeds around the corner is not really recommendable, since there isa lot of the "unexpected" everywhere. If you want to stay alive, better play it safe.
I have posted some more pix on seating position but I guess I will see what happens on a longer trip together with my wife. Let the experts talk then...:thumbsup: I am prepared to do some changes if needed.
There is still a big list of things coming up. The Zumo 660 with cracked non off-set China map is already on hand. I just got a spare from shock assembly and will take out the spring for measuring - I will get a progressive spring from Germany.
As mentioned at the beginning - what I am doing here - pepping up a chinese bike - is in some aspects not very reasonable especially when looking on the financial side. BUT, that's the only bigger bike available to ride legally in China and that's what I want to do. Besides, it's fun and I meet interesting people.

Hi AW, it may be that my 'middle-aged spread' and 188cm height is why I would need the panniers further backwards, Wendy already complains she is pushed off the back when I breathe in deeply!
Maybe an 'easy-rider' back rest with a whip aerial with an appropriate flag and a fake leopard tail hanging on the tip? You could bring back the '60's! Hmmm, I might do that one myself, I like the idea and when it was in fashion to do that kind of thing I was on a BSA motorbike not a Lambretta scooter so couldn't adorn the machine with chrome and flags without getting severe abuse from my mates! Shades of Quadrophenia ...
I think you are making a practical and good looking machine out of this model. Have you done many km on it?
