Re: Call for Ni-Bike Night in Beijing
Hey all,
was great seeing you guys last night. I hope we'll find time to ride out together, soon.
Scratchndent, thanks for organising and dinner and beers (and sodas for the ones who did not get the "no" in No-bike-night;-))
Cheers!
Re: Call for Ni-Bike Night in Beijing
Yes, it was great to join in, and thanks to S&D for organizing and hosting. It was very kind of him.
Great food, great drink, great people, great conversation. Perfect recipe for success.
As for "no-bike" ... hmmm ... a bike is my only means of transport. And besides, it was pleasant coming out of Kro's and seeing a few hot girls admiring my bike :)
Re: Call for Ni-Bike Night in Beijing
Dear LJH,
I'm the culprit who started the idea of (No-)Bike Night, at least here in Shanghai. In my home town north of the Golden Gate, we have a very well-attended Bike Night every Thursday night, rain or shine. Almost everybody rides in, and it's held in a breezeway between a Starbucks and a Chinese restaurant. No one drinks anything stronger than coffee or egg drop soup. Backs are slapped, legends are debunked, bikes are ogled or scorned, and everyone gets home safely.
It's a wonderful tradition that has lasted years, and I'd love to see it start up here in China too.
Maybe someday we'll have the critical mass of riders that will make it likely that more than one or two people to show up for such an event, but I'm not holding my breath. For a ton of reasons, mainly weather and the lack of appropriate meeting places, we Chinabikers tend to gather over meals and, well, libations. And while there are plenty of us who don't hesitate for second thoughts about riding home after a tipple or two, the law (uncompromising on drink driving), and the laws of nature, and the myriad issues relating to riding even sober in China, especially after dark, give me pause as to whether to encourage this kind of behavior by calling a Bike Night at which alcohol will be consumed.
That was the genesis of (No-)Bike Night in Shanghai. This is why god made taxis and buses and metros and bicycles and walking shoes. We've had plenty of guys show up on bikes for (No-)Bike Night, and some choose to drink. I tend to arrive by bicycle and drink within my limits, and thus can be accused of hypocrisy, or good sense, or both, or neither!
I just want everyone to get home safely, and to ride another day!
cheers
