No one here is talking about lapses of judgement.
We are talking about the choice almost all E-bike, bicycle or tricycle make:
- to burn every single red light regardless of conditions
- to take every single 1 way bicycle or car lane the wrong way regardless of conditions
- to cut through every traffic regardless of conditions forcing eventual incoming users into going down or miraculously succeeding an emergency braking + last 5 feet elusive maneuver
They put themselves and plenty nearby street users in danger ALL THE TIME & ANYWHERE, just cause they don't like to stop & cause they're anonymous on non-plated vehicles.
It's no lapse of judgment, it's a choice, it's selfish, reckless and outrageous as it costs LIVES, and not always the life (or not just the life) of the one who created the situation BY PURPOSE.
So if I join u on the fact that it's not OK, I'd like better to see a woman being abused by Jonsims than seeing that woman forcing a car filled with a cute family into oncoming traffic or into pedestrians on the side of the street.

Grabbing someone by the neck and "abusing the crap out of them" is still tantamount to assault. But hey it's China, laws are rarely enforced here so I guess it's ok.

I agree. I know everyone wants to throw eggs here and then, and wants to provoke a reaction. But you seldom get any. You can stop 2cm with a brake-screaming truck in front of a little girl jailwalking without any facial expression or any lesson learned. If something happens it's always someone elses' fault. If you get involved too much, it makes you more upset than them.
That doesn't mean I'm a shining example of my own advice though...
To bring the topic back on track, in my opinion ATGATT and quality gear is a must to ride safe, as well as developing a 360 degree view of the surroundings and always being observant.

I will now wrap up this blog without any photos (as none were taken) but I will give you some general impressions about what it is like riding a motorcycle in Yunnan Province. I will also reflect upon the driving style of Chinese drivers who probably take the cake as the worst in the world.
First of all, you have to understand that China, the most populous nation on earth, is a nation of new drivers. Ten years ago hardly anyone owned a car or even knew how to drive one. Five years ago it was a trickle. Today it is a flood with every Chinese citizen wanting to own a car and hundreds of millions of them now in a well-enough financial position to afford to do so.
With all these new cars and drivers on the road, the government is undertaking a massive nationwide roadway infrastructure project linking China’s major cities (over 130 cities in China have a population exceeding one million). Many of the roads are brand new and, from an engineering perspective, perfectly designed, and in Yunnan, they cut through unbelievably fantastic scenic areas. Also many new roads are in the process of being built that will open up areas presently inaccessible or most difficult to get to, like the Salween River valley area in the far northwest of the province abutting Tibet. I am eagerly awaiting the completion of that new roadway.
Also, you must take into consideration that China is a country where nearly everyone is a single-child brought up in a one-child family environment. There is a documented psychological effect to being an only child, where both parents sole attention and resources are focused directly on their single little prince or princess. So, many Chinese, deep inside, have the mind set of being raised as the most important person on Earth! And when this mental outlook is applied to driving, no one else on the road matters and all the other drivers can go to hell. A Chinese driver does whatever the hell they feel, whenever they want to when they are behind the wheel, and little of what they do follows the generally-accepted safe and courteous driving habits as practiced in Western countries.
The following is a general description of what to expect when riding in Yunnan: (Please keep in mind that what I am writing about below are gross generalizations with countless exceptions experienced.)
Always be prepared for the vehicle in front of you to stop suddenly on a roadway for no apparent reason with no warning or signaling and without making any attempt to pull over to the side or off the roadway, even if there is plenty of room to do so.
No one in China seems to be in a rush until they are in control of a motorized vehicle. So they are loathe to slow down or give way or show courtesy.
You can expect to encounter the occasional horrendous gridlock when riding through a small town or village. This also happens on side streets in the cities where space is tight and no one can or will move over to give another vehicle room to pass. Once gridlock occurs the drivers fill up both lanes in their impatience making extracting yourself from this quagmire a nightmare. All of this could be easily avoided if everyone practiced the tiniest bit of patience or courtesy.
A lot of this gridlock is the result of a driver just stopping their car any old place on the roadway to run an errand or do some shopping. Even if a parking spot is available, most times they driver will not use it because they know no other driver will allow them to pull out of their parking spot when they are finished and ready to leave.
The buses on rural roads drive like maniacs, drive smack in the middle of narrow mountain roads, do not like to get passed and will not cooperate by pulling over to the side just a tiny bit to allow someone else to pass them. Then when they enter a village to take on or discharge passengers, they do so in the middle of the roadway as well, blocking everyone behind them.
Chinese driving instructors must be the bravest people in the country. They take student drivers on treacherous mountain roads that are a challenge even for our motorcyclists, and the students don’t have a clue as to how to drive in the mountains plus they drive their vehicle in a terrified state of mind.
You have to always be on the alert for pedestrians; often they do not look either way before crossing a street or roadway. They just cross, and cross the thoroughfare slowly as well. Pedestrians also like to congregate on the roadway and not on the sidewalks.
Everyone is blowing their horns out of habit even if there is no one to toot at, so blowing your own horn when it is needed is often lost in the cacophony and rarely breaks into another driver’s consciousness.
Small motorcycles and scooters will charge into an intersection without slowing down using both directional lanes forcing everyone else to take evasive actions to avoid them. Often there are four or more small motorcycles and scooters doing this simultaneously from all four direction at once in an intersection.
When another vehicle is merging onto your roadway or onto a highway, you are never quite sure which lane they will choose to start driving in. They could drift all the way over into the passing/outside lane, exactly where you are trying to avoid merging road users.
Also slow drivers like to ride in the passing lane. They do not understand the concept behind the passing/outside lane.
When someone is parked they will pull out of their parking spot without looking to see if anyone is coming up behind them. They just pull out forcing you to slow way down or even stop as they begin to block your lane.
There are lots of broken down vehicles everywhere due to the general poor quality of Chinese-manufactured vehicles. Also many are in a decrepit condition, and many lorries break down from being tremendously overloaded with cargo.
No quick cure
Maybe several hundred years of positive personal development rather then 30 years of financial only development.

Well.. actually this piece of information is incorrect. The highway law in China specifically allows motorcycles to travel on expressways. Their speed is limited and they are supposed to stick to the hard shoulder. If you are interested you can dig out the applicable law in the highway code book and carry it with you. The police cannot stop motorcyclists going on the expressways.

Technically speaking you are correct, in the law it says motorcycles are allowed onto expressways, never read anything about them being forced to use the hard shoulder though. However there are huge great no motorcycle signs up on most expressways. This is a bylaw. Where you are allowed to ride your bike in Shanghai and Beijing are also bylaws. These local bylaws can see you fined or get points on your license. The odd nature of China.

Legally you are allowed to ride on the express ways for sure and many people have tried to argue with the toll booth management about the legalities off this matter. But as far as I know all have failed, which is understandably when you are talking to farmer works with a uniform on who has no ideal about what is right or wrong TIC .
So why waste your time and energy just skip on and show them the big finger , works for me

Living in Yunnan and Beijing that summarized the majority of things except children being held out the windows of vehicles to pee or poop. Or that sun roofs are used for tossing garbage.
China is changing rapidly. Mostly this change is driven by the people. It is they who want to be the best.. pretty much at everything. There are two kinds of stupid..
1) Suptid because they don't know any better
2) Stupid because they know better but are just pig ignorant.
They aren't stupid.
Some are obviously, but the general pb is they don't learn from their mistakes cause they don't see them as such.
Bad luck and the one who clipped u was going too fast are the 2 sole accident factors in China.
Have u ever heard a Ch person saying, "yea I was wrong"? They never are. It ain't stupidity. It's just they never yield. Yielding is being weak, they've been taught to be strong, regardless of what.
Put a few millions of people who can't be wrong, yield, or wait a single second on vehicles without any safety regulation related to production or use and watch the magic happen.
No helmets required, no disc brakes although it's more common now, no license or training, never turn ur lights on as it uses the battery (LOL), and f*ck you know what? You don't even need to follow any traffic regulation, just buy it and ride on buddy! The way of screwing the system to earn 5mn everyday till u die (in about 5mn) can be yours for near to nothing! How's that?
Someone didn't realize that not making any regulation for e-bikes would have a few other effects than just getting someone filthy rich through millions of sales.
That someone's Panamera is now regularly being bombarded by the crazy and incessant flux induced, and now they start to make laws to get e-bike users to abide traffic regulations, they don't sell as much as before anyways, everyone's got one already and they can be repaired about indefinitely with tape, shoe laces and bent metal strings, so whatever, let's try and remove them all from our streets now... In the meantime how many e-bikes users died is just another number to which nothing could've ever been done.
Sigh... Anyways TIC, and yea nothing will ever change except the price of stuff...
I've seen 2 people fall off while standing still! They crash E Bikes while sitting on them stationary !
3 near misses today, one slight rub against and he hit a parked bike
One near violent altercation and damn near run the short Fker down - he was arguing that riding on left was ok in his peanut brain
Two more advices:
a) in the country side watch out during late summer for peolle or vehicles with long bamboo stick. When they turn the sticks block the road donetimes over both lanes. They use it to hit down fruit and nuts from thr trees. Once I was near stabbed in that way.
b) if waiting to turn left, before moving again check your mirror and check if any idiot tries to overtake still from the left. All time set your turn signal.
Ok I officially road on a highway today passed the guy waving at me and yelling something
Saw nothing and had no issue getting off at small exit
Also passed a police check point on smaller road
They waved me thru
You can sometimes get away with it. Theres one expressway in this area that allows motorbikes (the alternative road is just plain dangerous). The other drivers seem to get annoyed and beep you though.
Driving past people who are yelling something might end up biting you in the ass if you make a habit of it. Especially if your riding illegally.
Expressways are tedious, I never bother trying.
