Re: Shineray X2X review, Guandong
Milton & Snake,
very much thanks for your feedback.
a) Milton's seat advise and related comments I have seen. As I do not plan longer trips with that bike and it will be more a fun tool I still wait with this mod first but take it to the list.
b) the spoke issue I will talk with Barry and come back for details if needed
c) If you have a specification for the wheel bearings available please send it so that I can put it to the listing
d) I will cancel the FCR carb from the list and put the PE32 in
e) the exhaust I check out later.
ShuBen

Sorry, only have it in Chinese. 6906/6005 are the front/rear wheel bearing specs.

Bike is bought and get plated. I choose the 2013 model with carburetor over EFI. So i play with variois carbs. Now i open the TaoBao shopping season to get the must haves. Hopefully next Sunday i have a wrench day already

Sorry to hear you have gave up on the idea of a Honds CRF 250L in china , but your proposal for a new bike sounds interesting and should work out well
Wish you luck

Congrats to him are in order as he goes the legal route, not the dodgy illegal number and engine swapping way.

Re: Shineray X2X review, Guandong
@Pal: Yes, I don't want to play here tricky games like changing VIN. Additional it should be easy a improved X2 to sell later on.
But here comes up a question:
What type/name/model is the X2 engine? And what is it cloned from?
I have seen it is a Honda AX-1 engine MD21E clone, but cant find any further info regarding that spec.
Background of the question is that I found a company website that offers EFI kits for various types of engines.
With that kit comes a software incl. documentation and mapping optimization would be possible :-)
(Luckily I even know an American real EFI expert nearby who would help me)

thanks in advance for your feedback!

Each to there own but I am sure modifying the engine with a change of part to increase the engine performance without declaring these mods is allso illegal !
But at lest my engine and bike will last longer !

Re: Shineray X2X review, Guandong
its just for testing and learning :naughty: .....
I have never the intention to ride on the road .... :lol8: no, no, no
-
Re: Shineray X2X review, Guandong
Does anyone think that these mods are intended for motorcycles on public roads?
God forbid! No!
Testing and learning. Yes, yes...
These are just elaborations of some theoretical aspects in engine theory.

BTW, ShuBen, interesting link. Thx.

That's funny so is the Yamaha YBR with the new 250cc Lifan 6 speed box just for testing and not for the road so now it's not so dodgy bike as PAL keep referring it as !!

Re: Shineray X2X review, Guandong
Yamaha plus Lifan equal bad mojo... Kinda... :icon10:

Re: Shineray X2X review, Guandong
As for the breaking spokes:
Never had problems on the front on my X2,
but on the back they broke like being of paper. (guess it's from the weight of luggage on the back)
they always broke at the threats inside the nipples. after breaking and exchanging maybe 20 or 30 of them on various trips on the side of the road, the whole rim was bent.
so I swapped the whole rear wheel for an X5 one. the spokes are same diameter, but not tapered. The rim is about 2 cm wider and has a stronger profile, because of "edged steps" instead of smooth curvy hump (if you know what I mean). The hubs are exactly the same, so it fits without any issues.
On the big trip last year I brought a whole bundle of spare spokes, but didn't break even a single one. And that was more than 20.000 km in 4 months from Shanghai to Europe!
if you want to see what I changed on the bike see the list here:

Re: Shineray X2X review, Guandong
It seems like good and simple solve.
How was the engine on that trip? Any drama?
Ive heard that the x2 engine is much more reliable than the x5, I even recall reading on some honest forum that shineray would prolly sell more x5 s if it had x2 engine on it. I saw your blog and it's excellent, some mechanical info/comaprison between the two would be great. Or maybe I missed it?

Re: Shineray X2X review, Guandong
Thanks for the valuable feedback on the spoke issue.
I learned from a German spoke manufacturer the cheap spokes have the thread end cutted while good spokes have rolled thread.
Rolled thread has the advantage that it has nearly no notches where the crack could start.
Second influence is of course the spoke material. But as we learned: what costs nothing is nothing! So i had to figure out that a really good spoke cost about 12 RMB/piece (ca. 1.80 Euro)
On my X5 I had a big issue with rear spokes too but they cracked off at the lentil shaped head inside the hub.
Has anyone seen a CNC hub for the X2 / X5?
In that case I would invest in it incl. good spokes and eliminate that problem sustainable.
-
Taobao I've seen CNC hubs before - don't know if it matches your bike or if you need to make a new wheel and sprocket etc etc

Wow, what a trip. I wish you guys could have furnished more content. I take it more is coming?? This "silk road" tour is something I've been dreaming about but not able to get it organized.
Good to hear that there is an inexpensive solution to the X2 spoke problem. I went the expensive route, which has held up well luckily.
That Safari gas tank must cost a bundle.

I Would imagine this is a typo error and I can't see a 18kw hitting 160kmh !!! Like most Chinese manufactures numbers are pulled out of the air !!!!! or should I have said ass

@Milton: with expensive route you mean high quality spokes?

By expensive route I meant I had Comstar custom-make a rim for my X2 (the rear). The replacement spokes are the standard ones for 亚翔 LD450, which are thicker and hence probably stronger. I haven't had any problems since the upgrade. The front wheel has been ok.
You can see how 亚翔 LD450 looks like by getting on Taobao.
Comstar is a supplier of motorcycle wheels located in Shanghai suburb. My Jialing 600 has stock Comstar wheels, which have been trouble free after 46K.

Drama?.. Yes! In uzbekistan my piston melted after a very skechty fillup at a lonely gas station in the middle of nowhere. Sold as 80 octane, but I doubt that it was. (we had to fill 80 octane a couple of times before and it was fine) The x5 probably could stomach the same crappy fuel because it has less compression.
Otherwise both engines were fine all the way! We rode them quite hard, but checked especially the oil almost every day.
My opinion, I'd rather have an x2 with an x5 engine in it. (before the trip I even thought of buying an x5 engine from taobao and put it in my bike, but try to explain that to any authority!)

if you want to know anything more specific about our trip, just ask me. We probably won't put anything new on our blog since we're both busy with getting our careers back on track and also trying to register our bikes in EU.
The safari tank was the most expensive mod on the bike. But totally worth it! I ordered two of them from Australia without knowing for sure if I could make it fit. Luckily it worked easier than expected. If anybody is interested, I think Winston still has the second tank, new and unused (and no bike to put it on).

Buy something like a suzuki DT 400.. then buy a legal heap of crap chinese made 250 which looks the same.. Get the legal bike registerd, then have your frame and engine numbers copied from the legal bike onto the suzuki and presto.......

Re: Shineray X2X review, Guandong
Does anyone of the X2 riders has replaced to front foot pegs by better quality? If so, please let me know where you found them.
I had found CNC machined FastPro footrests for CRF etc, but the Taobao seller says it does not fit on the X2.
In fact they look at the connection very sismilar to the X2. Does anyone has experience?
Thanks for your feedbac in advance.
As I go regular offroad it seems my weight is too high to carry the loads reliable.
Especially the left side is bended and breaks. I guess it has to do with the shit arrangement of the side stand that force you to keep the foot at the out side of the footrest.

Buy a cheap pair for the crf? Try it out?
-
Re: Shineray X2X review, Guandong
@NZBrakelathes
Thanks. That is a good idea. Could be my one :-) ... wasn't.
I found CRF standard ones by 68 RMB. So I try this.
Same time I have modified my side stand in very simple way. I brought it further down.
Now the lean angle is much less and the stand mechanic out of my foot resting area.
I get the foot 2.5 cm closer to the bike and do not stand at the edge of the foot rest anymore.
Lets see if that solves the problem sustainable. Photo will follow.

Re: Shineray X2X review, Guandong
Those pegs look ok. I'm sure you could make them fit with a drill and a file Shuben.

Re: Shineray X2X review, Guandong
I have installed the CRF foot rests from post #83 on the X2.
Slight modifications have been necessary:
a) I had to file down this two little nose ends about 4mm to get the good positioning.
b) The gap where the spring is located is smaller than on the original X2 pegs. So I rolled the springs off by one loop and reshaped them with suitable result. Then I cut the excessive end.
c) It needed 2 additional washers as the CRF pegs at the hinge are slimmer than the originals.
d) on the right side I filed a bit material away to make a better move up to the brake lever possible.
The result is a totally different feeling. When the originals got wet or muddy my foot was sliding and slipping and I was all time scared I would slip off and crash. With the new ones it feels your boots are nailed to the pegs because of these spikes. Now lets hope they don't bite my sole off.

Re: Shineray X2X review, Guandong
Does anyone know what years/models KTM parts/accessories will fit this bike? KTM's are actually pretty good with being fairly interchangeable, but with some big generational changes that you don't want to get wrong.

Re: Shineray X2X review, Guandong
Folks:
I have following question:
What are the Pro's / Con's of removing the exhaust gas recirculation at my X2?
I have taken it off and closed the connections as the membrane valve (or whatever this is) makes a nerve killing rattling sound.
Background:
From the exhaust channel at cylinder outlet leads a small pipe waste gas to a kind of flap or membrane valve that has also connection for fresh air and inject the the mix into the inlet side between carburetor and cylinder.
