yeah I guess you could say Urban Houston, I am on the West side of what we call the Beltway...I plan I using it as a daily rider..I have at the moment a Titan 150cc scooter and it is time for an upgrade. i have over 26,000 miles on my scooter since it was purchase in 2008. I will be looking at this post for a while studying everyones mods, and apps..I have never owned a motorcycle before, and it took me a while to figure out my scooter when i ran into some mechanical issues, but I think I have a knack for it being a chevy gearhead.
They're listed as CARB compliant because the bike presented for testing passed the test. The bike released to the public are not identical and it will eventually catch up to manufactures. They do leave the air injection equipment in place to help with exhaust emissions.
guys
Here are some pics of the original seat showing the offset. I installed a leather seat on the existing frame. it is still offset as you can see. The frame is not square, it is noticeable when the seat is removed. I had to add an aluminum plate(quick and dirty fix) to make the leather seat mount on the existing frame so i moved it over as best i could. I will probably take this frame and reweld it to work with the leather seat and make it square. Hopefully the new frame they are sending will be correct and the orig. seat will be square on the bike. It will be easy to swap out with just 2 bolts(frame and shock). Trying some different looks, this cross-stitch leather seat is kinda old school -- indian/triumph. Just having fun with an inexpensive toy. Also put in the nickel plate 100 main jet and a NGK plug. Makes a difference on top end, i didn't mess with the needle height as it seems to be fine right now. So far so good.
take care

Nice leather work.
Must have been a manufacturing defect in the seat frame. Gumpstas offset is identical to mine. The actual mounts are square, it's the seat that sits way to the left. Chad ordered me a new seat, although I'm still waiting on my left side mirror so who know when I'll get it.
Good luck with chad. He told me he ordered a seat. Never had any contact afterwards and would not answer emails for a week. When he gave me the sunny sports phone# (his parts supplier) I called and they had no clue about my seat problem although Chad told me he had talked to them. I ordered the seat directly thru sunny sports on my own. Some have had good luck with Chad, I have not. I was actually thinking of buying several of these bikes to customize and resell, but will not be using extreme scooters . I travel to china quite a bit, so I may research the direct connection and buy by container if I decide to customize multiple units. Hope the new seat frame fixes our problem.

Where did yougetthe leather seat? I have been looking but I was unsure which would fit
.
Gump,
I bet you can get the wholesale price under a $1000 per unit for a container load. Check on a larger displacement 167FMM (350cc) engine while you are in China.
I got it off ebay from a seller called cycleshirley. they sell alot of custom bike parts. they accept paypal and shipping was fast.
it did not fit exactly-- the seat studs are 7" spread on most custom seats. the spread on the df bracket is about 8". so i made an
aluminum plate and drilled it to bridge the gap. works nice but not the best cosmetically. i will come up with a prettier fix later.

The cure to my wayward seat was to brutally shove the business end of my floor jack's handle into the seat frame and give it a couple of good yanks to the right. Sits nice and straight now. BTW... I used the same technique on those two frame rails below the seat that support the side of the rear fender. Not being used for my new fender any longer, I want to mount turn signals off them. But I needed them to sit a smidge lower and further out than they currently are to clear my new fender. So I again turned to my jack handle to -pursuade- them in place.

Has anyone tried removing the pinstriping on the gas tank and fenders? Did it come off easy or leave a bunch of residue?
From experience,if you do remove the stripes, use a hair dryer to soften the adhesive.DON'T use a heat gun, unless you have experience using one. They will blister the paint. Both of these units will spark when the internal thermostat kicks on and off.So I would do it with the tank off, drained of fuel, and completely dried out inside.I haven't done a DF but I have done other bikes.
I just peeled mine off. No heat, just untrimmed finger nails.:mwink:

Did anyone put bar end mirrors on their DF yet and have any pictures? My left mirror fell off the arm on the way to work so now need a new set.

Sourced off Ebay for7/8" handlebars. Requires cutting the end off throttle tube on the right side to install.

A different style on my Qlink, Advantage of this type is the bar end weight to reduce vibration. I going to change to this style on my DF when I get around to it.
Hi guys! I've been reading this thread for a while and amazed by how much really useful info you've been sharing here. Thanks to all of you and Barnone specifically. I am ready to pull the trigger on this bike. Checked with the state, and it's all kosher here. Still have one question though - few of you mentioned installing a bigger motor on this frame, so have any of you found anything yet? Which motors might fit? How strong is the frame? Will it be able to take 500cc top or more? Thanks again for great info!
My thoughts were on a Suzuki GS500E/F engine.I sent the engine measurements to a guy on another forum a few years back. The GS500 engine is a little to tall,so it would require the backbone(upper frame tube) to be modified.Other than that,I believe just moving things around on the frame will help.
pakema,
Welcome to the DF thread.
No one that I know of has come up with a larger displacement engine that will fit without frame modification.
I'd say that if you can't live with the existing power then you should be looking at a different bike. There are some gains to be had with different jets but not a lot.
This is a $2200 bike that is a great deal at that price but not a great bike if you dump another $1000 or more to get it to fit your expectations. Just my .02 worth.
Bummer, my battery in the DF gave up today. Lasted all of five months. Off to WalMart for a replacement.
I can live with 250cc for the first season no problem. But I am pretty sure that soon I'll be looking for more. It's just hard to believe that nobody came up with anything bigger for this frame yet. Oh well, more research then!Quote:

Exactly! I've been looking for a cheap bobber for quite a while. Basically, for under $5K we have this bike, Hardknock, Heist and Johnny Pag's Barhog - all with < or = to 300cc. But Barhog's price is already in the used HD Sportster's range for a good condition 2004-2006 bike, 883cc and very bobberable indeed. So, pumping more money in these bikes doesn't make much sense to me. At least for now. Again - more research and thinking, I guess :)Quote:

If you are not going to be happy with the 250cc, get a used Japanese bike and bob it yourself. I have a 4 cylinder 650cc (bored out) yamaha maxim that I found bobbed and I love it. I drove some 250cc bikes during the driver safety course, and they could not compare. You can get a good used bike for half the price of these. Search craigslist, ebay and cycle trader.com. I love the look of the DF, but I enjoy having the extra power. I still get about 50mpg. You can see an example here:

I feel if you get the DF or buy a used one, you are going to have to be able to do some work on it (or find a good mechanic).
