Thanks for posting this, MJH. Question: are you seeing the same overall trend of sharply declining production across China's motorcycle manufacturers? Are there any standout exceptions? Is there any analysis as to why this is happening, and whether it's tied primarily to exports -- or whether the growing nationwide hostility toward motorcycles by major urban centers in China could be to blame?
thanks!
All this Qingqi performance or lack of, in my view, is purely down to management. Back in the day perhaps maybe seven years ago Qingqi were asking riders what they wanted from their bikes. In fact Crazy Carl, our very own admin had input on a never released QM250. Then the management changed, the project was shelved and the sales fell off a cliff. Time can only tell if they get new management with imagination and get some ideas rolling. I'd be pushing Suzuki to build and export a 500-600cc twin, but that's just me.
Companies do not always make profits, they have ups and downs, they always have some assets in manufacturing to work with. However from my perspective I look primarily at operating income and operting margin as a measurement of how they are doing. A negative value means they are loosing money the cost of their operations are more then the revenue from sales.
They are not all fending the same, some are holding and some falling, Jialings income from its operations was -204 CYN MIL for 2012, their operating margin -10.7%. For them the hole is getting deeper.
In answer to your question does the governments policies affect the industry, we both already know the answer to that.
Compare them to Zongshen with income from operations at 390 CYN MIL and a operating margin of 9.1%

I, like you have a clear idea of what I want from a motorcycle and already know in exact detail the size, colors, engine sizes and bike styles that I would pursue if I were the boss of a motorcycle company. This would probably lead the company into complete success or dismal failure. This probably why these companies choose bosses who are not usually very interested in motorcycles and have probably a legal or accountancy background. Probably not bad for slow growth. China being heavily autocratic if a company did have a design/R&D boss who thought the way I do their ideas wouldn't get that far because power, money and control are jealously guarded assets in China.
That is not the company you could sell your vision too.
I only present to them what is low risk and pragmatic, what they could bring to the market relatively easily and cost effectively.
If Suzuki brings larger displacement models to Chinese production it be most likely through Haojue not Qingqi, but I could be totally off on that, they are very for sure and rightfully guarded.
The retro GS125 models are on the Sinnis website, they will be offering two of them.

Makes me wonder if the ST125 is manufactured by Qingqi or is it made by Jianshe?

The Japanese manufactures are not interested in moving production of any existing engines they currently manufacture to China. The GW250 was engineered and designed to be manufactured in china. They did that with the intention of globally exporting that new model as well as selling it domestically in China.
The main exception is the YBR250 engine, I wonder to this date if it is actually entirely manufactured in China, some claim it is but it is also manufactured in Japan. That is not very efficient to do, that being having more then one production center for an engine.
All of the Japanese manufactures are not interested in expanding the model lines in China without protection and to them that is independence from the partners. The Chinese obviously want that as well, but they want more technology first. The adage is they want you to provide the rope to them that they will use to hang you with.
Realistically they could vie for the LC250 production, that engine has a very limited release, if they could bring it to the production it would displace some of the Yamaha V250 sales. But not only as a cruiser it could be brought to production in a standard frame as well , like the SRV frame.
I believe that Suzuki 248cc V-twin offers more power then their current 250 single, it also bests the Yamaha engine as well.

Qingqi looks to be partly out of its hiatus?

But they are behind the market now, the Liger 250 is being offered on Taobao at 19.0 RMB thats 3100 USD The 200 are going for 15.0 RMB or 2,451.00 USD.
Qingqi's marketing is still horribly mismanaged, they added some new images to their English website.
However it has more negative then positive affect, they need a new website very badly.
They added a revised version of their sport bike and also a new cruiser offering.

They seem to have fitted the CMX250 engine with an oil cooler. They also have it fitted with two CV type carburetors, the rating they have it at is 14kw@8500 rpm, its still 233cc, so they are getting 19.04 hp from that engine. They also put some nice finishes on the engine black on the block and chrome on the crankcase and head cover, the results look very nice.

Qingqi is selling much less and selling them for more...their average unit values are one of the highest in the Chinese Motorcycle industry.
Qingqi’s production is up this quarter compared to last years by 35%
Increased export as well as the value of those export has increased.

Suzuki has updated its DR200S for 2015...Jinan has two partners in China, one is Suzuki as its JV partner and the other is Pioneer as a down stream supply chain partner.

Pioneer seems to be offering the Suzuki 200cc engine in a trellis frame.

Pioneer has the model advertised on it Alibaba pages, with lots of wrong specifications?
There is always a problem with expelling hot air, like claiming in a manner that is too forward thinking, in a manner that is for the most part a from of manipulation in logic. It is wishful thinking not marketing.
Down stream is Somoto…. a made up brand name. The Motard is there and really not being presented professionally is it? In the images there it has the Zongshen NC250? I suppose that if it also received the Delphi EFI it could be sold in China, but not for less then ZS can sell it Lighting and Thunder Models. It would be best to offer that bike with the 125/200cc Suzuki and the 223cc ZS and get its prices down. It’s an appealing design but may be unmarketable, its production costs too high?
Does anyone know what engine does the 200cc correspond to? As the 250cc is (we assume Suzuki), I would like to know the 200cc so I can download the service manual. I just bought a SMX 200 Supermotard (QM200, Beta Motard 200, etc).
Qingqi has new website...
They are linked to TMALL and are offering a 250cc version of the U-ZEAL on it.
15,800.00 CNY = 2,551.80 USD
Seems apparent the admin of the China South Industry Group do not care if the model names match engine displacement as this one is a QM125-3X...but has the 249cc engine.
Here is the convention: I is 125cc and II is 200cc and III is 250cc, in example the II is retailing at:
11,000.00 CNY = 1,776.60 USD
maybe?
I have the bike linked to above, 200 cc Qingqi, reg here as a 125 due to restriction in Beijing. I got mine as a payment for a debt but at the time, the cost was 9K rmb. Cost a lot more due to the Jing A taag, which along with the repayment was one of the aims of buying this bike as a way to park a JING A tag.
I'm liking the new QM7 125 fit a 200cc head or the 250 in and I would like it even more has a hint of Aprilia SX125 about it

Those are nice, I really like their new offerings.

This one too? :eek2:
What? You like commuter bikes with alloy wheels, heavily treaded tires, enduro front fenders and pipeworks more elaborated than the one on "Pompidou centre"? :confused1:
I've noticed a novelty among new (at least, to me) "Qingqis" - QM 150 9R. It is, basically, common commuter bike, plain vanilla, but IMO, with the chocolate chips. A few new, tastefully designed details and plain bike, neither better nor worse than dozens of similar bikes, can easy catch someone's eye. At least, my catched.
This one has a balanced CG clone, so I think the total price of the QM 150 9R is not high.
Attachment 16812
Noticed it is actually 169cc 12.5hp, the build quality has improved at Qingqi.
I see allot of new parts on these that I would be interested to get for my bike, including the alloy rims, but unfortunately I have a drum back brake and these are only disks.
Look how good the 250 looks now!
