I knew that I saw somewhere photo of a Finnish soldier on "Jawa" with skis.

But during my search I've figured one more thing, not about "Jawa", skies, studs or chains. Browsing through search results about "Jawa" with skis, one thumbnail pic caught my eye.

Long story - short: it appears that you in Finland have been ridden "Tomos" mopeds, ex Yugoslav, now Slovene, which I mentioned here several times. I knew that "Tomos" had their Dutch assembly plant, but those Finnish mopeds are surprise for me. OK, this one on a picture above has only "Tomos" engine, but this one, "Solifer Automattii"...

Very interesting posting because I don't really recall that Solifer Speed 73 moped. Also that Solifer Tomos Automatic is a new moped for me. Solifer was a peculiar company, it seems, rebranded several mopeds. They manufacture Solifer travel trailers, which are popular and liked in Finland.

Hehe, have to say that is still really cool moped. Boys tuned those madly by changing the cylinder to 80cc among other things. It could easily go 120 km/h, which was a bit suicidal for the chassis and suspension :lol8: Great fun nonetheless, you felt like you would begin to fly like an aeroplane on the airfield :lol8:

Though, not that much loved by teenagers because it was said to be Pappa-Tunturi, that is Grandfather-Tunturi, meaning Oldie-Moped. Anyway, it would win anyday what is the most loved moped in Finland contest.

About Jawas with skis: The retiree who took me to get the Jawa said to me several times that if I am going to drive in the winter, then I must get those skis, that they are really good. I said that none manufactures them anymore, but he insisted that I must get them :lol8:

About Pappa-Tunturi, I have seen in this village a few times old school Pappa-Tunturi drivers without helmets, just some fur hat or something on the head. They are like those NHL players who had special permit to not wear a helmet :lol8: Will for sure follow one when I see one next time with my Jawa and camera, and document them :clap:

I would like to see what is inside his engine. It is forced-air cooled "Puch", that is obvious, like on early "Tomos" with manual clutch, but this time, with automatic transmission.

Well, they have written books about Pappa-Tunturi, but I am not an expert of if. I think they used Puck motor. Here is one of the earliest models from 50's.

You mentioned hand guards - did you saw so far something that suits you?

Plus, I saw some, so called "wind deflectors" - knee/leg/foot guards mounted on crash bars and some additional deflectors on a triple clamps. Any thoughts about that?

I ordered tires below as replacement for the Heidenaus. They are both classified as rear tires, but I suppose there is nothing what prevents or make them bad if used in front? I have understood those are reinforced in some way so that they are more durable in rear.

What has been the biggest problem for me in winter has been feets, or especially toes, and fingers. Upper parts of legs has not suffered of cold that much, I guess there are more blood and flesh on those parts. In about -20 celcius head and chest can get severe cold too. It matters a lot how long and how fast you drive in winter. If you drive fast and for long, then surely any wind protection is good. At -5 celsius and with about 20 km distances there is no probs worth to mention (if you have excellent motorcycling equipment). A bit cold can become, but before it begins to be notable you have already driven that 20 km.

Met the woman I wrote about earlier and spend two days with her, and what the hell, she is like a woman of my life, and such a beauty from inside to outside that there is nothing lacking in her. I had lost my hope I could find anymore a woman with whom I could connect in depth, but no, I found one, and she is unbeliavable in all ways. Totally stunning, and so much so that I could write already a small book of her wonders!


Edit: Back to tires. Forgot to mention I am not very happy with those Continentals. They can take a loads of kilometers, which predicts they are a bit hard rubber, which makes them bad in snow, and if there is cold, them can become even more hard and bad. We'll see.

In the summer any tires can do easily, but in winter one should really get the best tires he can because the friction, or better said, sudden lack of friction can cause a crash.

I am such poor boy totally enthusiastic of my Jawa and the Woman, who solved the problem of naming Jawa without me even asking how I should name Jawa. She gave a name Iron Lady for the Jawa :clap:

Did you checked can those "Continentals" fit on your bike, more precise - is there extra width inside swingarm for those knobs?

BTW, those "Petroshinas" mentioned earlier are pretty soft tires, so maybe they are good for the winter.

About winter riding - stop complaining. Who forced you to sell your MZ? One "Volkspolizei's" fairing would solve all your problems.

At work chatted with one customer who have a new Lada and who has got MZ and now he have, darn me!, I don't remember the manufacturer, but some Soviet Union two stroker 350 cm³, which can use MZ's pistons. He have had several Eastern two strokers and we both agreed that MZ is the best bike in the world :riding:

Still a bit disappointed I did not buy the brand new MZ straight from DDR, huh, once in a lifetime chance missed, but such is life. Some things come and go, and of some things one never gets even to hold on.

I visually checked the room in Jawa for Continental tires and it looked like in the rear there would be plenty of room for a bigger tire. In the front there is lack of space between front forks for 3.5" tires, I estimated about 0.5cm space would had been between a fork tube and tire. That was rather annoying because Jawa have 2.5 inch wheel rims in both rear and front. I would had bought 3.5" Heidenaus for the front too, but the lack of space disturbed me even though there could had been enough space for the tire. Now I am concerned about how the Continental tire fits under the front fender, but I think if lucky it should fit even without rising the front fender because the current Mitas is a huge fat tire height wise.


Regarding the Woman, can't help it, I am hopelessly fallen in love and I think that what I have learned on life is that certain feelings should not be tuned down nor chained a bit :naughty: That is, if no third party is not going to get hurt on the way.

Alright, Margareth got about 1100 km today, and so I changed the front suspension oil. Had to drive additional 100 km to buy a tool for the job. Now have done all maintenance the Jawa Operator's Manual recommends, except haven't adjusted the clutch, haven't done anything to chain (it is well greased), haven't done anything to brakes, and haven't really tightened any bolts or nuts because all were tight. So what Jawa has got during the first 1200 km is new transmission and suspension oil and some lubrication :clap:

I must to tell you something.

This morning, just after 7 O'clock I was riding my lil' tiller across my village - to the grocery, to acquaintance and then, to another friend and back home. Morning was a bit chilly (some 10 deg. Celsius), foggy and moist. Little bastard didn't manage to warm up all the way and he was choking like asthmatic - too cold for him, and to tell you the truth, even for me it was... not pleasant ride. Just to pass annual technical inspection in nearby town on Monday or Tuesday, and bike goes to winter hibernation.

What I wanted to tell you?

My today's experience convicted me that you are one crazy Finn, if you are really gonna ride "Jawa" when temperature hits zero degrees. :icon10:

Well, I can't even imagine to not drive during the winter. Motorcycling is the connection between you, the iron lady, and the elements: simply said motorcycling is the connection between you and The World, with what you enjoy merrily both uphills and downhills like in a good relationship. The winter is not a reason at all to disconnect of that connection.

The day before yesterday, when I went to buy the tool needed in changing the fork oil, was rainy and cold. On highway I kept the wind guard on my helmet closed, which protected my eyes from rain. On the villages I kept the wind guard open and enjoyed of the cold rain on my face. What was the problem? There was no problem. Everything was as it should be, or better said, nothing could had been better. I was connected with the elements and the world, my motorcycle faithfully purring between my legs, making it easy for me to move around and experience and enjoy of The World as it was.

Got today the winter tires. They are in box, haven't opened it yet. Now need to only find a shop who have the tools and skills to install spikes on the tires.

They say a loved child have many names. My Jawa have some: Iron Lady, Margareth, and Miroslava :scooter::clap::riding:

I would say that a Jawa abandoned during the winter is a sad Jawa :lol8:

Ok, the time for bad update came rather soon.

Jawa has been acting a lot lately. It has been very rainy early winter here because this November has been the most warm November ever in Finland. We only had snow for about two days so far. This was awesome in a way that I had no need to change tires to winter tires. However, all that rain and moisture annoyed Miroslava a helluva big time, and so she refused to let turning lights to flash properly. She behaves like this: in the morning when started up, no turning signal lights. Then after a few kilometers they begun to work. And more: she begun to refuse to give light from head light at times. No signal lights was not a biggie, but no head light is like game over in winter in Finland when there is no snow. That is, it is very dark here, and moist tarmac eats all the light there is.

Also, the settings on the carburator travel a lot. When I tune the carburator for warm engine the next time the engine is warm the settings wont do anymore. I have either insufficient idle or heavily over eager idle. This issue caused a small engine damage, I believe. I tuned the carburetor after driving for the warm engine. When I started the engine next time it revved madly to 5000 giving heart breaking screeeeetch. I turned the electircity away and tuned the carburator, after which the screeeetch came back for s short moment, then idled without screeching. Now I have strange small and fast "tic-tic-tic-tic-tic" on the engine at acceleration and cruise speeds. Huh, so well it purred before, and now she whines all the time!

And like all this would not be enough, she refused to take the winter tire I got to the front. Oh well. The best for her would be to drain her empty of all fluids and push to the living room as a model of a motorcycle. Good piece of legacy art!

Even Miroslava discreetly announced to you that it is time for her to go to winter hibernation.

Don't worry. Old Czech farm girl will be OK after some tweaking.

About first issue, blinkers and headlight: it looks to me like battery is dying. Is this battery one which came with Miroslava? Same is with my lil' tiller (except, my headlight is getting juice straight from the coils). Add in equation that battery capacity depletes on low temperature an you got... what you got.

One thing that I know about winter is that humidity rises beyond belief and water condensation constant. And Miroslava's wire loom is not water-tight...

All you know about carb tuning - you can throw away on a cold and humid day. Plus, aforementioned condensation can make cruel joke with air filter (what you have - paper or foam filter?) and "enrich" content of your fuel tank. Simply, there are to much factors that can go wrong and as a result - to give you a headache.

Man, I wish I could hear how you try to explain (on Finnish, naturally) to herra Simpanen how this "tic-tic-tic" started. I imagine that even C-3PO could not catch what you said. :icon10:

But jokes aside - that "ticking" worries me most. I hope that "thermal group" (cylinder, pistons, piston rings and pins) is OK. All the rest you can fix without digging spare parts...

But let's not anticipate things. Winter just started and you have at least four months to see what happened to Miroslava.

I bought the battery, it is brand new and supposedly should be above average battery. I thought about reduced battery capacity because of cold weather, but when the headlight turned off first time after about 10 km drive I questioned the theory. That said, the air filter is made of paper, and maybe it has clogged because of moisture (did not think about that, good point, thanks!). It can be possible also that there is some crap on fuel jets in carburator.

I agree the ticking engine is the biggest issue. I wishfully think that something is rattling on the motorcycle outside of the engine.

Can't, however, put the bike on rest for the winter. Will have to work on the issues.

Haha, I don't participate on politics :D Norwegian oil rig was a good guess, been watching job offers by Statoil :) But I was away because Jawa was a bit broken and the lady back then was not interested to do motorcycle travelling, as opposed to what she made me believe. So, Jawa got abandoned... untill we divorced and I begat troubleshooting her. The electricity problem was caused by broken master key switch box. I changed that, original spare part was about 20 euro, and now headlight, tail light, and indicators work like a charm.

Then I got a bit problems with carburator settings, Miroslava begat fouling spark plugs after I changed jets. However, that was partly intentional since there was sealing between carburator and cylinder which restricted the flow of air, and which was suggested to be removed at 1500 km. I at first changed the jets and after that removed the restriction because I wanted to experience each change in detail in order to understand Miroslava better.

Now the bike, however, works like a charm, and I am very fond of her. No need for "better" bike, I already have the best on par if not better than MZ :)

She have got a few new names: Pegasus and Old Faithful :) The former was given by a woman who I asked guess what is her name, and to my surprise she guessed Pegasus, all the other women have guessed nothing, just said hihi I don't know :) Old Faithful was given by my neighbor watching me fixing Jawa :)

Today will make a mini engagement trip with Jawa :riding: Waiting for full honey moon :)

Are Czech women like Jawa? Then better stay hell far away of them :lol8: Else might fall in love, and who knows where it would lead with a Czech woman :lol8: I can say I have done my share of cursing at Miroslava, knowing all the time that it is me who is not worthy of her :)

Anyway, today for a ride and camping...in a rain, and it will rain for long tomorrow, will be a hard test how wirings of Miroslava can handle that..would not be surprised if in the morning in the middle of nowhere in the forest she would just say no :mwink: Shall prepare a huge arsenal of words for that :lol8:

I remember my childhood with the old two stroke Jawa/CZ that cartied us (from today's) never further then 50km. The good part was that permanent failure analysis and repair brought us to a high maintenance knowledge level.

I think I am too fond of MZ ETZ 301, which was true lazy man's bike :) I wish I could replicate that with Jawa :) But Jawa is different! This last mini trip she was so very true to the true Jawa spirit: after riding 20 meters I had to drive to nearest gasoline station and grab the tools :) I laughed so very hard :D

Yeah, Indian giant bought Jawa, so I understood. Good times, plenty of choise in basic bikes. I am not on dualsports anymore since 99 % of the time I ride on tarmac :) However, I have the real deal, enter Miroslava :)

You mean, this inscription on the tank? It says "Kirov" on Cyrillic script ("Киров", or in capital letters - "КИРОВ"). "Kirov Plant", which was (and still is) located in St. Petersburg, during WWII made KV tanks and refurbished everything else, including those small T-26s (originally produced up to '41. in other St. Petersburg's factory). So, my guess is that this captured T-26 got inscription after refurbishment in St. Petersburg, which someone decide to keep up until now.

Is this tank stands somewhere in proud loneliness, or you took a ride to Parola tank museum?

Brilliant, you really are an amazing man with all that knowledge you have, I said that to a sweet lady I rode to meet too :)

Yeah, I rode to Parola military base, where I did my service in Armoured Brigade, but that small cute tank was not there, she was nearby in Hämeenlinna and exactly close to actual castle Hämeenlinna :)

I am doing a small ride report to contribute something in this very best MC forum in Internet :) So more pics coming later.
