Firstly, let me say that this has gotten off topic for the actual thread, however the "forum category" is called OFF TOPIC...so whats your problem? Secondly you assert that my working knowledge of the internet, the GFW and more is merely based on what I read on Wiki? As IF you actually had any clue as to what my knowledge & skill sets are. For the past 12 years I have operated my own servers, have 3 internet based companies and have written in excess of 150,000 lines of custom code for everything from credit card processing to an extremely complex anti-fraud system that to day has blocked 100% of the fraud on my sites for 5 years running! To do that I had to have an exceptionally good understanding of server traffic, bots & user agents, IP connections and even mapping tens of thousands of proxy systems. It required 2 years to develop and implement and integrate into my Mod_Security filter.
Furthermore I LIVE IN CHINA, and have to operate my network from INSIDE the GFW. How do you assert that I am able to do this based on reading a Wiki page? I operate and secure a VOIP (which is normally 100% blocked) here, as well as my credit card processor. By stating that I am "wrong" are you actually asserting you have some sort of technical superiority from your "experiences"? So now your the "know it all" and I am, as you say the "dumb ass"...I hope you do see the problem with that logic.
Let me explain a few things about what you said. They filter your connection, true..its called DPI (deep packet inspection) and its the primary way the GFW works. However it does not BLOCK your connection, it simply drops the connection between your modem and your ISP. The site is not blocked for everyone in China, or even everyone in your building (unless they use the same modem). In fact often the connection can be reestablished simply by unplugging your modem for 2 minutes and powering it back up which clears the modems log file. Which is why when your NOT using a VPN, you should use Google SSL search for things that you think might get blocked. Furthermore you can avoid many such issues by simply changing your computers default DNS to use either Google or Open DNS so your search results show the true results, not the ones Chinese DNS servers are giving you, which will often omit sites they don't like or are simply hosted on a shared server. (blocked by DNS association)
Yes, they DO use bots to scan the websites that draws lots of attention, or have high volumes of traffic from inside China. I have thousands of pages of server access logs with faked user agent strings that trace back to Chinese companies or "Universities". They are poorly disguised, but extremely persistent which is why I have written a complex .htaccess regular expression filter to block about 80% of them from my networks as they simply waste my bandwidth and server cycles. I suspect most of them are looking for ways to exploit the server versus looking for objectionable content, however the fact remains they are one in the same gvt offices.
I do not think Felix is missing ANY points, in fact I think he gets it more than most. Your assertion is that self censorship is vital to the continued access of this site from various members inside China. A position I respect, even if the manner in which the censorship is applied is neither consistent or logical. A fact pointed out many times, but ignored because we would not want to be hypocrites now would we? Also this site does not even rank in the top 1 Million (Alexa) and its content could never be interpreted as an outlet for political descent or anti-communist propaganda which is what gets a site blocked.
Lastly, they word T1bet IS the actual translated word for a place, like Hong Kong or Macau (which I just got back from) its taught in the schools here because its a word for a place, not a political buzzword to describe an anti-Chinese position. Even my wife's 9 year old niece had to learn it at school, sadly she did not know it on the test shown below. So really, get real. You & others post whole news stories from other sites about politics in TIC, with links to blocked sites and slam newb's for a few words, which the site operator does not appear to care about or would use the word filter.
The big problem is you seem top know so little about the actual topic in hand......
