JH600 impression

Hello Franki and ChinaV,

many thanks for your ideas and suggestions. i'm really looking forward to returning to china after the lunar new year, and getting my JH600. i'm going into this with my eyes open -- fully cognizant of the difficulties of getting parts and service in China. But we all will be raising the visibility of adventure riding, and this will build support in China.

And I expect we'll all be helping each other too! I'll do my best.

Rode my new JH600 home last Friday here in Xinhui. Nice bike but a bit top heavy. Idle speed seems really high for a 600cc single. Any ideas what the "normal" idle speed should be & how to adjust?

Hope you don't mind; here's a bunch of questions for you:
--Is that the 2009 model or are they now into a new product cycle for 2010? Is this still priced under 30k RMB? (i.e., 29,800 ≈ US$4,365)
--I'm assuming the Xinhui you mention is the one northwest of Zhuhai in Guangdong province. Where was the bike delivered and how far was your ride? (I'm thinking you didn't ride it down from Chongqing!)
--You are living in Thailand? You going to ride the JH600 out of China or keep her inside the PRC?
--On the assumption that you are riding on public roadways in China, what kind of vehicle registration did you get? Will there be restrictions on where you can ride?
--What kind of sales support are you getting from Jialing? (They seem to do a lot of friendly stuff for Franki, but he's cultivated that relationship over several years. I've tried to deal with Jialing's office in Shanghai, where I live, and they refer everything to Chongqing.)
--When you say it rides a bit top-heavy, what are you comparing it to? Is this in comparison to a street bike, or to other dual sports like the 650GS or KLR650? (I'm riding a KLR in California right now, but it's the first bike I've ever ridden so don't have any real comparison.)
--Nice to see it comes with a skidplate, but it's otherwise quite farkle-free. Did the factory have any suggestions for cases or other touring gear?
--Now that you've got it, what do you plan to do with it??:mwink:

As you can see I'm quite excited about the big Jialing, and look forward to getting one soon. I'll be returning to Shanghai after the Lunar New Year, and will likely go fetch one straight from the factory in Chongqing, with the intent to ride it back to Shanghai, hopefully via an interesting and circuitous course!

Nice looking bike. I've followed Franki's ride reports on the JH600, and I see one in my future. I'm sure he'll respond to your query about idle speed. FWIW when I got my F650GS last year I thought the idle was way too high at 1,200rpm. Sure enough, that was the correct speed. It was explained to me that since it is such a big thumper at 650cc that it needed that much speed to retain momentum and wouldn't idle properly any lower. Since the JH600 is only a few cc's smaller, I'm guessing it's the same situation.

Hi Jeff,

JH600 idle speed should be 1600-1800rpm depending on where you are at. Other questions I leave it to Bob to answer.

Please note all sales and services of JH600 is done through Jialing Chongqing JH600 office. There are a few service centres spreadf out in Beijing, Mianyang, Kaiyuan, Xiangyang etc. but non of them are suitablly equipped to do a full service. Therefore, I do recommand all to deal with Jialing direct. Getting someone who can master Chinese well to call will certainly speed things up a lot.

those panniers are really nice looking. Are they available in China or Hong Kong? They look pretty much like the BMW ones or the new series Touratech is offering.

Thanks for your update, and the images of the aluminum panniers. those do look excellent, but I don't see any branding. Did you have them fabricated in China?

Also, are you back from your Southeast Asia ride? I look forward to seeing your next ride report in advrider!

I'll be returning to Shanghai in mid-March, and will be moving quickly to get the Jialing. I'm thinking now of going out to fetch it in Chongqing, and riding it back to Shanghai via some circuitous and interesting route.

Any other Jialing owners in Shanghai or nearby?? I see that the Austrian company that designed the JH600 engine has a testing office in Shanghai. I wonder if any of the engineers there have the JH600?

I've been riding a 2000 KLR600 over here in California, which is a quite similar dual sport, and enjoying the learning curve very much. I'll be very keen to start riding in China upon my return.

Hey Andreas,

The cases will be available both in Chna and HK. We are testing them out during our SEA tour and so far very happy with it. We shall make more modifications/improvements to make it more user friendly. Current model is about 41 liters and we are also looking at a 29 litercase. I showed them to Dr. Greg Frazer (the guy who rode around the world 5 times) and he loved it very much.

The cases are made in China and will have a brand that will bring a smile on your face.

Just got back from SEA ride and busy clearing my desk during CNY. I am still thinking should I post the 2 other rides I did prior to the SEA one....:naughty:

As I have said, forget about talking to anyone else but Jialing JH600 sales office when you want anything done to JH600. I would suggest that you fly to Chongqing to pick up your bike and ride around Sichuan during the break-in period. Then ride back to Chongqing to have it's first 1000km or so service. Then you can either crate it by the factory and ship it back to Shanghai or ride it back. There is a lot to see in Sichuan (read my RRs in ADV).

KLR is an excellent ride. JH600 may not match up to KLR but has a comfy seat for long distance ride. You will have a whole new learning experience when you come back to ride in China. Rules that you learn in US do not work in the wild wild east:deal: Beemer Boy from ADV will be posting a how to survive the road in Asia thread soon and you should be looking out for it.:riding:

Just got a photo from Bob. He has installed the Laser exhaust on his JH600 and found it to be more powerful and sounds great. It also eliminated the backfire problem which he had with a cheap local made exhaust.

surely the Laser sounds great and is more powerful. It looks like the same model than I have, however, not that it bothers me too much, but my JH600 backfires sometimes, especially when taking the throttle down quickly. I wonder if there is a difference between Bob's bike and mine.

Hi Andreas,

The laser on both of your bikes are identical. Bob said "Also with the multi-chamber design the backfires associated with throttle lift off and/or compression deceleration are well contained." So I guess there are still some backfire. All performance exhaust have this issue even on Japanese or European bikes. Tunning the ECU may help but I would not hold my breath waiting for Jialing to come up with different mapping.

Do your bikes have the secondary air injection (SAI) device? If so, removing it and blocking off the various connection points is said to reduce or eliminate the popping.

The throttle lift backfire is now not an objectionable sound :scooter: I find it quite useful when passing some local retard on a scooter dawdling & wobbling along talking on a cell phone & doing a bit of nose picking while traveling to the local cheap noodle shop :jerkoff: Wakes `em up a bit :naughty: Also replaced the H4 headlights with 2 HID units ( very good at night :bling: ) & the stock horn with a set of Seoul Horns ( LOUD & many sounds :riding: )

Yeah, "loud pipes safes lives" - but sometimes you want to stealth into a small town, with no traffic but bicycles and not raising too much attention...
I wonder wether this backfire could cause damage to engine valves or other parts on the long term?

How was the wiring handled with the dual headlights system on the JH600, when you fitted the HID units? Which model JH600 did you buy, the Asian market model with dual high-low beams, or the single low double high beam headlights? Just curious how you managed the wiring side of it, though perhaps both light units share the same wiring loom backbone? Fitted HID units to my CFMoto250 VIP (now sold) and my Dragstar 1100 Classic. While the light is nice white-bright on high/low beam, I find that the beam is far too narrow or concentrated on both bikes. The CFMoto having a rectangular light and the Dragstar with a large round light - both have too high concentrated central beam with not enough of the peripheral spread. What's you opinion...

Still considering the JH600, and following Pfaelzer mod thread with lots of interest

Asian model ... Dual headlights ... Soooo much light now looks like an F18 on final approach :-o Probably cause the local Airforce to scramble some J4s ;-)

I love the idea of superbright HID headlights. Do you mind posting some details about what you installed, and where you got it? The stock lights are so dim as to be useless, even dangerous.

I remember reading a thread on this a while back. in this post, humanbeing recommends some particular seller on taobao. I personally had a 50w halogen, but it melted the wires and now I have to go back and find something else that works.

Hi, Slabo. Thanks for that reminder. I recall that bikerdoc also POSTED IN THAT THREAD about his HID installation, and his dissatisfaction with the narrowness of the HID beam and its lack of a high/low toggle. He was going to replace the HIDs with 130/100w halogens...

So Bikerdoc, have you made the change, and how did it come out. I don't really care one way or the other, as long as I get a substantially stronger and broader beam to light my way -- even though I've recently renewed my vow never to ride at night!

JH600 is running A-O.K. except for:

1: No load "missing" every few seconds when rpm is above idle to ~ 5000 rpm.

2: A crack now ~ 2 cm long in the fiberglass extending out from the fuel filler.

Not sure of the brand on the HID lights but... Made-In-China & purchased / installed at Mr. Motorcycle in Jiangmen.

Not surprised your local Jialing dealer sucks. No shop in China is trained or equipped to deal with the JH600. If you are still inside of one year since your purchase, which you are, and under 10k km, you are still under warranty. You might want to take it up directly with Chongqing, and have them send you a new tank cowling. I've got the part catalog (exploding diagrams) and could look up the part number for you...

Can you toggle your HID between high and low beam?

The best guy to talk to at Jialing Chongqing is Mr Zhou (Lao Zhou i.e. 老周), who is the after-sales service engineer for the JH600. You can reach him at +86 158 2335 5119. His English is pretty much non-existent, but he's friendly, and helpful, and responsive. Those are not universal traits up there.

I'm contacting THIS HID DISTRIBUTOR, as pointed out by slabo. They've got a ton of kits, and hopefully can steer me to a good match for the JH600.

Love the idea of an XR1200, although you can kill the air-cooled v-twin on a track, it would be hard to kill on a road!
