Hey y'all - looking at selling my DF - pictures in post 2233 in this forum - did most of the mods on this forum, including 35 sprocket (most important in my opinion). Bike still has under 200 miles on the clock - so (because of the added mods) it is better than new... Enjoyed working on it, but need to move onto my next project.
Bike is in Columbus GA - If you know of anyone interested, send me a private message by clicking the tab above.
Thanks
garryo
Good luck with your trade up garryo. I love my DF but like you I need something with a bigger engine. But I will ride this puppy for at least another year. Gotta say all the Harley guys here in town love it and think it's cool. I really think DF screwed the pooch by putting a little 250 in this thing. Otherwise they would have had an absolute hit. Either way they cant keep enough of them in stock so it's not a failure in any way. I expect the Chinese to start moving into our market in a big way the next few years but only if they better the quality and more importantly if they can build a support system.
I plan on upgrading my liability only insurance to full coverate but I tend to wonder what would happen if I wreck the bike and take it to a local mechanic. I can just see them scratching their heads and telling me they cant find replacement parts LOL.

Good luck with that. When I first got mine (August 2011) I tried to put full coverage insurance on it (with Progressive ins) and was told no way. I think it was because they had no record of the DF ( cost to fix collision damage ). Maybe, by now, they have upgraded their records?
I have full coverage. It was 101 a year. Little company out of Ohio. Has anyone had issues with missing after about 2/3 throttle. I haven't opened the carburetor yet but I am thinking it needs bigger jets.
Well I have Progressive as well through USAA. And they told me I could get full coverage. But again I wonder how they would handle it if (or when) I spill my bike. They have my bike listed as an Ice Bear instead of a DF though because that's what my title has on it. I guess Ice Bear is another brand name they sell these under.
When all is said and done it is a bike so maybe they could use Honda parts in case of the worst? I figure that in an accident the wheels and tires would be the first to go right? I have heard some people say they paid close to 1K for tires for other bikes. Apparently motorcycle tires are expensive.
Howdy gang... long time, no post. Last month I had 'an off' on one of my Triumph Bonneville's while riding near Harlan KY with friends. I'm OK, mostly bruised and scraped up like my bike. Oh well, they say there are two types of motorcyclists: Those who have crashed... and those who will.
I've repaired my crashed bike and have put it away for the winter along with my other bikes. The exception I'm making this year is keeping the DF ready to go for those Indian summer days we get here in the upper Midwest. In years past, I kept a Bonneville prepped and on a charger. The DF is a much better solution for me being so easy to pull out of an overstuffed garage, and the soft clutch and forward controls are easier on my sore wrist & ankle. I suspect it will be an annual thing in coming years. I really got my $$$ out of this DF. A no-regrets purchase.
/Mike
Glad to hear your alright.I took a spill a few years back, still feeling some of the ill affects. I agree about the DF..it is definetly worth every penny.. I have had a blast on mine since I have been riding..I have only had it a year come the end of this month..and have over 6000 miles on it.yeah it had some down time for little things..but I expected that when i got it..I have always maintained "You get what you pay for". Overall it is a decent enough bike, and great for tooling around on. enjoy.
Hey guys, I've been looking at the thread in depth for the last couple of weeks and the information is invaluable.
I'm living in San Antonio, TX and I've had my bike for about three months now. It's had it's issues, especially with a leak in the tank where i just ended up having it replaced, but so far it's a good purchase. I have very little experience with bikes and sadly, I have no family or friends who have any more experience than i do so it's kind of hard to figure out some of the problems. By the way, I bought it from scootergasmotor.com for ~2300 shipped. It took about a week and I got the MSO a day before and luckily I've had no horror stories about registering it at all. And after looking throug the thread I guess I got really lucky.
Anyway, I've decided to post and ask for two things, first, I am considering putting on a 35 tooth sprocket as others have recommended (I'm about 150 lbs and San Antonio is relatively flat), but as simple as this may be, I obviously have never done it. I could use some very foolproof instruction on how to do this. Thanks to this thread I already know where I can get the sprocket and I have the tools to do so, but I just don't want to go into it blind.
Also, I replaced the handlebars with black drag bars (awesome choice) with bar ends. All i had to do was drill two holes for the controls and rearrange some of the excess cable slack. The only issue is that now my turn signals don't work. They don't turn on with the blinker swtich nor the hazard light swtich.
I didn't remove any wiring, or put too much tension on any.
I checked the wiring harnesses and nothing is loose.
I have been pulling slightly on the wiring and twisting the handlebars to see if they would suddenly activate, but no results.
No wires look frayed or pinched off.
As far as I can tell there should be no issue, all I did was slide off the controls from the stock bars and slide them on the new ones. All the other lights and electronics work no problem execept all the turn signals.
Anyway I know it's a lot of info to digest on my first post, but I figured I would see if there was a simple solution that the great minds here can fill me in on if possible.
Thanks for your time guys and I will be posting pictures very soon.
do your headlights get brighter and dimmer with engine revs ? mine did and it burned up my blinker relay , yours might not be connected to your bar switch at all , my bike took about 3-4 months to burn the blinker out but it did (bad voltage regulator)
sprocket pretty simple , remove from bike (hardest part - remove snap ring retainer clip) remove 4 bolts , install in reverse order
BUT you do have to pay attention to the spacers on each side of wheel when uninstalling and reinstall on the proper side , and your brake caliper (wires tend to break)
Here's my bike, I think I'm going to eventually repaint the fenders and gas tank to a matte black; the lights too. By the way I got the bar and mirrors from amazon for ~ 40 bucks. In fact, the bar had only one review, but it was from someone who bought it for this exact bike. The only issue I've had with the bars is the fact that the wiring and cables have a bit too much slack so it looks a bit unsightly around the headlight and speedo.

Thanks for the info on the sprocket, Dan. As for My headlight, it does dim when I'm riding but when I slow down and pull in the clutch it brightens significantly. It will dim even at low rpms. I've had my bike since July but it only has a little over 400 miles on it, could the relay go out that fast? Also, how could I go about replacing or fixing it?
Hey Dan, the only trouble I have with my lights is that when I apply the brakes, whether it be the hand ot foot, they get brighter.Nothing about reving..I just notice it when i am stopped at night.puzzled me once, then I just ignore it..could that be the regulator as well?
dont think so , theres a post way back about hooking up the headlight on off switch , getting rid of some headlamp issue's though
found it , about 1/2 way down

bent your shift rod ? http://www.gravesport.com/Graves-Mot...Shift-Rod.html
horn bracket as well as a reflector bracket broke for seemingly no reason (rewelded reflector , replaced horn with 1 from Oreilies autoparts (car horn))
sprocket - http://www.oldbikebarn.com/Motorcycl...?search=JTR279 - 520 chain - most seem to go for 36 tooth 38 if your heavy or riding in really hilly conditions , myself (175 lbs) I use a 428 chain 17/36 (17 front wont fit with 520 chain) (15/30 16/33 520 equivalant) (80+ mph indicated perfect conditions) but you MUST HAVE jetting and air ram and keep valve adjustments very close and keep flapping clothing (drag) to a minimum or you will never see the top of 5th
- and remember max horsepower (between 10-15) is produced @ 2/3rds max RPM's unlike overhead cam motors and then it drops off SHARPLY , gear accordingly , you need not reach max rpm's in 5th if you can hold your desired cruise speed at 1/2-2/3 rpm's , which also increases fuel economy and manages heat better

dimming headlight problem, really easy to unplug the blue and white wire from the dark green wire and plug it into the other blue and white wire like it should have been been in the first place. now my light switch works and my lights don't dim

I went to auto parts store and bought a radiator hose (used the air filter for sizing) with a 180 degree bend in it cut it to only have the U shape bolted it to the carb the other end to the air filter , now I have a forward facing air intake out in the air stream - aka poormans air ram ( no real effect untill past 50 indicated )
new battery (have to chop into steel battery box to get new 1 to fit) from autozone
HAVE A HUGE PROBLEM!!!!!!
Filled up the tank and started. Holy s--t full RPM, couldn't get to the kill switch fast enough.
pulled the needle seat didnt ya :P
wide open throttle is caused by re-inserting the carb tube (with needle in it) so dont seat fully . I did that myself
look at it the cutout has to be facing the rear wheel , and it will let it seat deeper , stopping that WOT on start
valve adjust - https://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&p...wZDM3&hl=en_US = compression stroke = both valves fully raised

55/65 watt sealed beam headlight that fits - its a , Sylvania H5006 , and the Wiring harness to go with it , fit inside the existing headlamp shell
all right I believe thats everything fairly relivant to the DF's for the most part (just thought I would mash all upgrade repairs together into 1 compact area) - most are from what others have found im just jamming em into 1 post
Any suggestions where I can buy a 38 sprocket online? Have given up on the oldbike barn, they have been out of stock and coming for months
I've been looking for the same thing. There was an online store at www.china-moto.com but now they just seem to have a forum. Finally got around to putting my old sportster tank on mine. Got tired of the other one leaking. Not only looks better but doubled my riding range.
Best wishes to all those on the east coast. Take care!!
Anyone in SC or surrounding areas looking for a DF bobber? I knew once the bug hit me again I'd want more power and longer rides. I've upgraded to A Shadow 1100 so I'm selling the Dong Fang. Still running great. Only 1500 miles. I wouldn't sell it but I only have room for one bike. Info is on Greenville, SC Craigslist.
Pushing close to 7000 miles on my bobber..should hit it today after work. Kinda excited actually. She has been real good to me so far. Got some things I need to do as well.. change the oil, change the plug, wash her, and do some overall checks on all the bolts and nuts. then grease what needs to be greased. I am going back to normal oil as apposed to the synthetic stuff. Just do not see that big a difference other than the price.
XS650 tank almost finished. Just need clear coat and new petcocks to arriveAttachment 9182
Wow, nice job! Love the color scheme.

I just got the DF250 Bobber from a local dealer, Mad-CityMotorsports.com. They are a dealer in Madison, WI. Amazing customer service!!! Ask for Nick. Anyway, sounds like I'm plugging these guys, but seriously, they rock! My Dong Fang Bobber has been an incredible experience so far. I've never ridden a bike except once when I was 20. This bike is so much fun!!!!! For $1999, such a deal! The only problem I had was the gas tank leaked. Nick at Mad-City ordered me another immediately under warranty and offered to put on another tank from another bobber they had so I could keep on the road since the weather was still so nice!!! Amazing customer experience!!!! They took one of there bikes off sale for a period of time just to take care of a past sale!!! These guys rock!!
I have 800 miles so far and bought a jack from Harbor Freight Tools for a hondo and learned to adjust the chain and I change the oil frequently.
Anybody removed the rear guard and did the rear wheel have to be removed to do it? I want to wrap mine in vinyl
Sorry its a country thing, we call them guards in the southern hemisphere ( Mud Guards) but yes I mean the fender. I guess not to hard once the wheel is removed , but also have to remove the wiring for lights etc.
I just checked out my guards and they attached in 6 places. 3 on each side. 1 being the rear blinkers which are also attached to the frame. I can't get my index finger under the screw under the guard attaching the blinker. Would probably be best to remove rear tire first. Gas tank and front fender will be real easy. I'm going with the guard thing from here on out. Enjoy summer. I'm looking forward to snowboarding!
You really do not have to remove the rear wheel..but it would be easier for sure.I decided to take off those ugly rear turnsignal lights, and I had to drill holes in the fender as well to accept a home made braket I have for my saddle bags.Never took the wheel off at all. It is a little snug, but it can be done.
Hi all, names Joe and I just got my 250RTB on Monday 11/19. Purchased it from Saferwholesale.com for $2176 shipped. Ordered on a Monday and it came exactly 2 weeks later. Crate was in good shape, bike was in good shape (no damage to speak of). Bike came with MSO, just mailed it back to dealer certified mail with signiture for finalization. So far they have been ok to deal with. I'm 38yo and this is my first street bike. I have done the pre-run adjustments (i.e oil, valves, magnetic oil plug and NGK spark plug) that I have read to do in this thread. Threadlocked all nuts and bolts and so on. Now I have read around 65-70 pages of this thread and most of the links are now gone as with most of your pictures in your how to's. I would like some pics of the smog removal procedure vacuum lock that I have read about here. Also, some how to's on the washer on the neddle for the carb as it is running way to rich. So far I love this bike and being a bicycle mechanic I dont mind wrenching on it myself. But I will need some instruction to proform these tunes. Anyone in Michigan have one of these bikes and was it a pain to get it legal and on the road? I figured I would'nt order the black as most of you already have a black one and I like to be a little different than everyone else so I ordered the blue and I must say it is breath taking. I put on a pair of black drag bars from Sin City bikes on ebay $17 delivered. Think I may remove the horn and replace it with a dual trumpet air horn and place it somewhere in the engine compartment. Also, gonna put on a side mount license plate bracket and get rid of the stupid fender mount taillight. Blinkers are also going to be swapped out. Cant wait to start customizing this thing. Love the sound of the pipe but I think I want it louder, any luck removing the guts of the pipe? Thinking I'm going to wrap the pipe as well as it gets pretty hot. Any mods that you would suggest I make please send my way and any links if possible. Thanks ~pic is with brake being worked on~Attachment 9231
Thanks for the info! Yeah, the plug has alot of carbon build up on it and seems to wanna cut out until it gets warm. Bike has less than 2 miles on it and when you let it run a while it runs good without popping and sputtering but it takes a minute to warm up. I'm wondering if the all of the smog junk and vacuums are what the issue is?
