I have a question to the X5 owners:
What is your average fuel consumption?
My one is now on 5.8 to 6L / 100km. That is a lot and I think something is wrong. I will take the bike apart and check/clean the the carburator

While I don't have a X5 (seriously considered one, but the reviews here have put me off for now), I can state that I also found my CF650TR with 6 speed gearbox, to use substantially more fuel than my AN650 Burgy scoot or even Dragstar 1100, both of which are significantly heavier than the CF650TR. I was very surprised at this given that the Burgy uses a semi-auto CVT tranny, so theoritically should be even less fuel efficient than the manual gearbox and much lighter 650TR. Once I removed the standard muffler with the huge catalytic converter and inserted an aftermarket muffler, fuel consumption has improved considerably...
Not sure if the X5 has a catalytic converter, but if it does then this might be something to look at.
I was also considering the X5 until the reports put me off, I even went to one of the dealer that finished my desire for one of these things.
One thing I was planning to do with an X5 was to fit a Mikuni Pumper carb originally for a XR400. like this one http://www.xrsonly.com/mikuni-pumper...m-honda-xr400r Thie should resolve any carb issues and give a nice improvement in performance. I was also thinking about a Cam like this http://www.xrsonly.com/hot-cams-stag...rx400ex-xr400r and a bore and piston kit like this. http://www.ebay.com/itm/HONDA-XR400R...fb9b85&vxp=mtr . Would make an X5 a decent performer :-)
that is kind of low
http://www.fuelly.com/motorcycle/honda/xr400r
from taking the average of MJH's provided website i come to:
avg. 46.6 MPG = 6.1 litres per 100 kms.
That would be in the normal range.
(I admit I keep the throttle wide open .... sometimes nonstop on the expressway for about 100km at 110 to 125 km/h - 130km/h is my max. with fully opened throttle)
anyway unbelievable: My 1800CC big bore Harley had lower consumption (5 - 5.5 l/100kms)
Have installed yesterday with Barry’s help the heating grips I bought longer time ago already.
Here the type I bought:
http://item.taobao.com/item.htm?spm=...d=20667868322#
How we did it:
I checked internet what is the best connection and found the advice to connect the grips to a supply line that will be shut off when the ignition is off to avoid discharging your battery unintended. I used the horn power supply.
To do it well I checked the connection at the horn button and traced it back to the connection where the left hand controls are plugged to the main wire harness. I removed some insulator plastic from that cable and soldered a connector for the grips. The ground line I connected directly to battery via with the 12V charger cable.
To do it well you need to take off the fuel tank. But this is the fastest way to get it done (German style). Then all cables are nicely integrated. Look at the result …..
It tested it for an hour at about 7deg C and it works well. But level 2 is too warm.
So still needs then a second test at 0deg C …… (or at -12deg C …. LaiYuan …. Sabine & Barry -> you know, :lol8:)

Looks good, congrats!
I'd be a little concerned about the wiring loom/harness on a Chinese bike. Therefore, I'd have used a relay (German Bosch ... heh heh) off the horn wiring with the hot wire direct to battery, and the ground wire simply to ground.
Enjoy the cold weather - was out today and hit several icy patches, mid-day. Sun is now too low to clear off some corners.
Stop every 30 minutes to heat up your hands at the engine to get feeling back again. I, sitting in the sidecar, heated myself with Grog in the thermos. On the way back, Grog gone, I suffered really. There is a video on YoutubeQuote:

Remember the terrible wind, coming around the curve, high up on the mountain pass?
yeah .... it has blown Barry nearly in the wall .... huuuuh .... frightening ... BUT award winning

this is an awesome award!!!! :lol8:
These are the grips I've installed on my Jialing JH600. My first thoughts about them are "why the hell didn't I install these 2 years ago already!"
My heated grips are just as thick as the original JH600 grips, Shuben's are a bit thicker.
I just bought the same ones but didnt install them yet. here in Zhejiang it doesnt get as cold as up north so I still have some time. Although, last week I had a wee 4day trip to Wuyuan and I must admit that those mornings up to 9am were really freezing but mostly my knees though
p.s. Barry, how is your X2? any problems with it?
I switched the CDI box (50 kuai), was having some serious misfiring issues before when the engine would get hot. That issue seems resolved now.
To get back on topic regarding the heated grips, I've also installed the same heated grips as ShuBen on my X2 now. I must say that overall they are better than the ones I've installed on my JH600. First of all, on setting 1 they get as hot perhaps even hotter as the grips on my JH600 on the highest setting. Second, they're thicker which means the surface of the grip that touches your fingers/handpalm is bigger. Third, they seem to keep their warmth better. For example, when turing off the bike/grips they seem to stay warm quite a bit longer than the grips on my JH600.
Hi X5 dudes, Question, what is the ideal rmp for the first 1000klm? ive been driving the X5 under 4000rmp, though have been pushing a bit up to 5000rmp in the last trip. So far have travel 750klm.
In addition after the 750klm, the valves are fairly noisy, should I check the valve clearance?
The oil leak location was traced to a loose hose clamp at the oil cooler and a stripped bolt at the cylinder head at the start of the oil pipes. Shineray will be replacing the cylinder head. Seriously, if these guys assemble their bikes better, they would save themselves some money.
i advise to check the clamps for oil lines regular. It seems the hose material is adopting to the clamp pressure and needs re tightening.
for the hoses you can use each oil resistant hose with correct inner diameter. (check in car garages)
10,000km .... with regular maintenance without a serious problem that caused truck transport or instant repair.

Hi,
a quick update from my side.
I have now 2000 km on the clock - did a 3 day - 1000 km ride to huangshan which was great and very smooth.
This weekend we went to Suzhou to play a little bit at the tankgrounds... on the way back to the city my clutch cable yanked off at the lever... So I pushed the bike to next scooter shop which was luckily just around the corner.
This guys of course didnt have the right part but they fixed it temporarily so I could drive to a small motorbike and car garage which one of the guys recommended.
The guys from Neomax where a great help. First they try to fit a clutch cable from a bike they had standing around - that one was too long so the found a guy who knows a guy .... and after 2 hrs we where good to go.
while they where repairing the clutch cable I saw that the left oilcooler was somehow wet. seems it is leaking a little bit. -so i gotta go to the dealer in Shanghai to have a look and fix it.
Since I have the bike I always have trouble with the choke.
I open the choke completely to start up and after a while I close it completely. the engine runs good, but every time I stop at a traffic light the idle speed is too less and the engine turns off.
Its quite annoying so I play with the choke to have a proper idle speed when stopping - but I dont think it is supposed to be like that.
I also tried to adjust the screw on the curborator but it has no effect. I dont want to screw around too much here as I dont have any experience.
Fuel consumption:
on the ride to huangshan which was long driving and almost no stop and go, the bike used 11 litre for 250 km - which should result in 350 km for a full tank (22km per litre)
but this weekend I used 11 litre for 170 km (15km per litre) - It was a lot stop and go but I still think that is too much.
can it be the choke issue - the cold weather? any idea?
Oh..and when we arrived in Shanghai I saw another guy with an X5 on the other side of the road - he had a nice motorguard installed on his bike. wraps around a little bit and comes in orange color - anybody seen that?
15km/litre is definitely something amiss for a 400cc study the choke operation perhaps you have it half on ?
Any new updates?
My average consumption on the X5 was about 5.5 L/100km or ~19km/l
Hi Shuben, I found an excellent way to gain fuel consumption (MPG in my language)....loose weight mate!! Good to see you are still out and about, my Bandit 1200 is still in the shed. Hope that I will be on it soon as my back is getting better. Safe riding.
Hi mate,
no chance for me to get down the weight figure. My lady simply cooking too well and i dont want disappoint her by leaving stuff on the plate.
So did the other way around...... keep the weight and increase bike power instead. :-)
Send me a PM and let me know whats going on at you side. Or skype me.
Greetings to UK and F. hope to see u in CN soon again.
Shuben
There is an updated model of the X5 - I havent seen it in person yet but I saw a picture. - there are some design modifications
The tank is apparently made of metal now and has a fancy world sticker on it.
I would like to know what other modifications they made - would be good to know which are the weak points on my X5 and add some updated parts.
Anyone has an idea?
ok guys, there are those of us still contemplating a purchase. I read all of the travails thus far and still leaning hard for a X5 purchase. ShuBen seems to have the longest running "relationship" with the bike. Still an X5 "Believer" notwithstanding all of the repair opportunities documented this past year? So far all I have read hasn't run me off yet. I worked on bikes like this since my first Honda SL70 in 1970 and subsequent bikes to my Honda SL350 in 1976 and subsequent bikes since then. What is the going price out the door excluding plate these days? Any new color combinations in? I think I saw in past posts that Qili carries the X5? any other Beijing dealers?
what say you X5 owners?
The last new X5 I have seen few days ago had still the same color scheme and only small mods compared to my one.
Never saw a new design, but I knew from the Shineray guy that they were working on an update with e.g. metal fuel tank.
Just last days I had contact to the new owner of my former X5. Seems he had no new issues with the bike.
Last price I know is on 29k RMB incl. sales tax but without plating.
hey guys! i've been lurking on the forum for a few weeks (real life neighbors with fahni until recently! and we've done several rides with other forum members). just bought the new version of the x5, the one with the world map and the metal tank. super shocking is literally within the first 15km, while i was accelerating quite aggressively out of a stoplight (roughly 5-6k rpm), the engine died and wouldn't start again until i opened the choke all the way. but then the idle rpm was quite high, around 3k, so i closed it and from then on, the engine kept sputtering and refusing to start (same as if it was a very cold winter day ... tried for several min, no change).
i bought the bike from datone over on the east 5th--i'll call them in the morning and see what they say about sending over a mechanic. anyways, will send more pics and give a longer update once i've had the bike for more than 24 hours :-D.
ps i realize this is controversial, but your thoughts on the break-in process? go with the manufacturer suggestion of nothing over 6k rpm or be a bit more aggressive and push the bike in each gear? also, oil change right away and then every how many km?
pps i'll be riding this x5 (thanks to shuben for all his in-depth reviews) from beijing to berlin in mid june, so any tips on mods and must-have gear would be appreciated--i'm thinking iradium spark plug / the did chain / usb charger / alum panniers
thanks guys! --jerry
Jerry, gidday welcome to the looney house...
Break in is/can be a controversial topic. Best advice, go with the MFG recommendation always, since during the warranty if the MFG or their agent can determine abuse or that the break in has not be followed, the MFG is within their right to refuse a warranty claim. Simple stuff.
When I read that you had been "accelerating quite aggressively out of a stoplight (roughly 5-6k rpm)" I immediately thought that, that was not the wisest move given these MC's are from TIC MFG.
Looking forward to seeing the photos, and keeping abreast of your updates.
