Modifications and worries walk hand in hand.
They are going to have to change this sites name to my communist bike here pretty soon.
Dang those are some nice rainbows, I live on a lake where I fish pretty much everyday in the summer if its nice, using a 22ft electric powered Pontoon, it isnt fast but its silent. Lake is full of 3 pound bass and occasion Lunkers, and has some nice 20lb pike we catch and release each year. Your Garage sounds like mine...Just need to spend more time organizing so you can buy more fun stuff. The DF 250 looks so amazing and light and thin compared to my URAL, I have a feeling Im going to really enjoy the DF Bobber this summer. Bet that Milling machine and Lathe will come in handy. I am adding Honda Heat sink rays to the DF. I had to Mill down the thickness of the heat sink to 1/4 Inch where the two bolts go thru so the exhaust bolts can reach thru it. It will cool the motor a bit and add a touch of the Old school to the engine. Just need to pull the exhaust off. Wondering if the exhaust header where it fits in the the manifold is smooth of if that flange is welded on to it? Hope its smooth so I can slip the heat sink on or back to the drawing board.
I will post some picts when done.
Yep side car and all! The My Communist bike yep it fits ...Gee I wonder if Im drawn to the elegant crudness and the fact they need you to work on them and make them better. But truth betold its probably why we all bought a DF. Think about the fact these com bikes are pretty different. I love the hand cut rubber washers on the URAL that insulate the tail lite that held on by regular washers on the outside WTH, they R cut nice and crooked as example...see it will give me something to do. Or the nice crooked hand cut floor mat in the side car...:confused1: Back to work
BOB, Glad you posted a Picture of that Ural Patrol, as I didnt have the guts to post a picture of my new bike on the DF Bobber forum. I am never selling My DF either, I have too much time invested and love it like the work of art it is. PS mY U R AL is white at the moment.
Thanks! LOL :lol8:
I have a 12' "53" Montgomery Wards boat sitting on a "50" home made trailer, with a 4 hp Johnson. Talk about old school. I troll leaded line out about 300 ft. makes for some pretty nice tail dancing when you hook a nice one. I'd like to see pictures of the heat sink, sound like something I might like to do. Guts I got, money I don't. Let me know if you need some custom small parts whittled out for it.
yeah, your 250rtb is one of the best ones I've seen. Even without the photo shop.
Well you see in Countries that can't just print money they have to put everyone to work, so instead of having a machine stamp out perfect washers or floor mats, they have Ivan or Yang Lou, running about wildly with a razor knife. I mean really would you rather pay 15.00 for a politically correct head gasket that fails immediately or .50 for some rough hewn piece of junk that lasts forever. You're reading this so you know where you stand. These foreign unfortunates know that if the stuff they make doesn't work their dead, good incentive. Be that way here soon, best sharpen up your razor knives boys and know how to use em.
You know when all the first rice burners came out they all said what a POS but now there are more of them on the road and working better than any other machine out there. Seen any 90's Caddies lately?
So who is to say? You understand and take care of a machine it's going to last you awhile.
As far as I can see the DF or a URAL aren't any different.
Bob, words of wisdom up there for sure, you hit the nail on the head bluntly, and yeah we are heading there pretty quick in a reverse sort of way. Here is a very interesting article that I am sure parallels the Dong Fang Factory and way of doing things. I am sure there are exaggerations in the words but give it a read as its a real eye opener http://www.wired.com/autopia/2012/01...7&viewall=true
Ingenuity over technology. Bread Loafs over Starvation.:yinyang:
[/ATTACH]Attachment 10314Attachment 10315Now thats a fishing boat Bob! Gee I bet its paid for and everything. You own it and it does not own you, a unique concept in boating nowdays. Thanks for the offer of help!
below is the Honda heat sink pict off a 1972 CB that will fit the DF. next is my Garaged Ural and My buddies black DF in the back ground that we are going to finish up tonight by installing his new dual seat springs on a bracket I fabricated that fits under the original seat betwwen the 2 Y bars and uses factory bolts. I will post a pict of the bracket late today when he comes over to install it.
Goodbar, I took the tour of the Ural factory. It looks a lot like some of the machine shops I've worked in. Your new machine looks great, but after reading the article I believe I'll stick to the two wheelers. I sure do like the idea of drive over anything though. The boat set up was a whole 750 it's perfect for around here with my fishing hole just twenty minutes away. Thanks for the pic of the heat sink. I think it will look and work great. Have fun doing the mod on your pals DF. What engine oil do you use for your DF? Can you use synthetic? I was looking at this air filter I bought. When I look through the inside I can see lots of daylight. Is there suppose to be some kind of liner on the inside, or is it suppose to be like this? Doesn't look like it's capable of filtering fine dust. Are you suppose to dip in in oil? You can see how much I know of these things.
Bob/ yes you can get syn oil for wet clutch but I would rather wait until the engine is broke in as it may cause your rings and stuff to break-in in-properly and not seat and seal as syn can as I have heard cause bad break-ins. Too slippery. You need a little silver Swarthy oil and shavings in the oil.
Get a Magnetic plug and change the oil after 500 miles and then at 1000 then / maybe SYN oil would be fine then just not yet.
Yeh I know the Ural scares the crap out of everybody the first time they fly the chair by accident. I am going to pretend I’m on a farm tractor for the first month I ride the URAL and side car so I don’t flip or crap my shorts.
Back to the Df Bobber Mods:
- We put in his dual seat springs using the bracket I designed, Ill post picts of it/ looks great and he loves the seat now also. But…
EVERYBODY NEW WARNINGs X2 - if you take your tank off check all of the White plug-in connectors even the ones buried under the harness he had 2 of them that were connected but not properly snapped together as if the person ( kid probably) on the assembly line\\didn’t have the strength to push them tight enough to get them to lock. He had intermittent Turn sig and horn problems. That trouble is now gone. I also rewired his left turn signal were the wires were almost torn apart because ( another problem to fix or look at and check to prevent this) Make sure the large wire that goes from the Speedo sensor to the area near the headlight has a bracket holding it to the frame clamped on the thick part of the wire protector sleeve, because the white snap plug for it catches on the fork as you turn the handle bars and will stretch it and all the other wires near it ,mainly the left turn wires.
I made a bracket and installed it correctly as his was missing for some reason. I will bet others have this little bracket missing. Just trace the speedo wire and make sure the thick part of that wire is under a bracket near the fork brace. If it’s there make sure its tight. Anyhow Joe left happy and his DF bobber is now done and ready to ride finally. GEMLINS GONE:clap:
OH yeh forgot : 2 things I crazy glued the rubber tank holders on so they dont fall off during tank re-installation and then I finger tightened his 2 Gas tank nuts
then gave them a gentle 1/4 turn and then added a drop lock tite blue to the threads to prevent nuts from coming off, I can see how people over tightened these and wrecked their tank. There is no way to know when to quit tightning the nuts on the threads but the harness is compressing so it never tightens fully until the weld weakens. Its actually not a bad design if you understand that they did this because the harnesses are all different heights. Use caution and just gentle pressure and lock tight.
:confused1:
I'll post picts in Wed afternoon.... I'm wiped out
Goodbar I edited my last post with a few more ?s for you.
I'll change my oil. I hope I didn't do any damage as I've put 6 miles on it with the synthetic. Just use 10w-40 motorcycle oil? Thanks
Bob
Bummer, I would I guess as the stuff may not let your engine breakin like it should. It is what I have heard many times but who knows its all second hand info.
Anyhow I gota be up in 4 short hours. Signing off
I got the new flasher relay and mine seems to be working great now. However after I replaced it I decided to check the old one and it too also works, so I imagine I'll have problems down the line to deal with.
One day I will get under the tank and check things out but since everything is working fine now I'll let it fly.
Got my insurance this afternoon and it was more than my car. 250 a year
I have three brackets for the control wiring. Two are these wire jobs that are mounted to the top of the fork assy. The look like they might have been just for transport but i liked the way they keep things together so I left them. There is another one that I believe is the one you are talking about. It mounts to the bottom of the fork assy and has a grommet. I've turned it to it's limits and everythings seem to have enough play. I will make sure again. thanks for the heads up.
Glad your friend was happy and you guys had a good time.
I paid 140 insurance for a year with state farm thats way to much Bob, I will bet ya one fishing lure that you have a plug under your tank thats not locked all the way so it may work one day and one day it wont... takes 10 min to fix dont be scared to take it off
Go to bed I'll see you tomorrow. Thanks again
Goodbar, I ordered the plug, got it 10.95 off ebay free shipping.
The first thing I want to do is change the oil. I think I will go with 10w-40. Then I have to set it up with someone to haul it down to the DMV for an inspection, then get it registered and plated, then take the written test so I can get a learners permit, then haul it back to the house.
Then I will do the under the tank inspection, Air filter crankcase mod, smog block mod. I was going under the tank anyway to re-wrap the harness as all the plugs under there are exposed.
Then I have to take a weekend off from work and do the State safety school so I can get my endorsement.
It was over 50 here today and most of the snow is gone. The spring growth is coming on and the girl friend is wanting me to rake out gardens and the like.
I've got 4k invested in a solar power set up that I started in January and still have to mount the panels and hook them up.
So I'm just going to take my time and enjoy all these things because as soon as I'm done then I will be looking for more ways to go broke.
I look forward to cruising. We have a motorcycle jamboree here in the summer, maybe 10k bikers come. I bet this bike will get a lot of interest.
Thanks again for all the help.
Thank god I can rely on the forum! It just reminds me how dumb I am at times when I forget things.
I managed to ride a few miles today and pickup a part from the auto parts store. And since I finally fixed my daily driver I decied to do the smog mod. I cut the sheet metal placed it with hi temp sealent and ground down the back of the plate were the tube stuck out. When that was all done moved the ignition and while moving the tank I shut off the gas. Afterwards I did go through and checked the clips and re-attached everything. Then after everything was put back together I started the engine. Because it was cold I choked. Then put to the second choke setting and got what I call back fire but white smoke coming from the air filter. I get it to run seconds at the time And continue attempting to starting killing the battery. In the end I killed the battery and couldn't get it to stay running. So I decieded to put it away.
I read Googbar's post about the tank when I came in and the light shined over head. I ran out to the shed and opened the gas valve. She stated right up! ;-) my dumb moment. But I think next week ill check the valve clearance ans I don't under stand why she still back fires.

Every time I ride I feel I should be wearing this shirt!

I have those concerns since the stock air filter is the same way and my brother thinks it sucks because small dirt particles can still get through it. Page 21 of the Dongfang owners manual states to replace it with a "foam type element i.e. UNI brand"
It says after 600 miles you should clean it by immersing the filter in a cleaning solution or solvent and brushing it with plastic bristle brush. Then carefully air dry with compressed air, and then a light coat of oil.
Still concerned about the carb getting unneeded dirt though............
freezerboy,
Here's the link.

They sent a pretty generic owners manual with mine that is for DF250cc.
It has pictures of a different bike and bad translation. For an oil change it says to lay the bike down flat on the ground. Shows pictures of a air filter housing and says it has a gauze filter inside. I went to the uni site and they do have some ugly looking expencive filters. I'll see what else I can find.
hey Bob I want a link for the small crankcase filter you posted a pic of the other day. It says cat on top...thanks
I got that from work, they throw away all kinds of stuff there. I picked it out of a dumpser.
