The 2010 Taklimakan Rally
Any of you race guys, please add more/better info.
The competition will last 12 days from May 28th to June 8th of 2010 covering over 4,000 km. There are eight race sections, the longest being over 2,000 km. There will be 20% more desert than that of the previous year. The race route will cover Turpan, Harmy, Bazhou, Hetian and Aksu with the final route being released after road inspection in March of 2010.
The rally will be divided into car, motorcycle, and newly-added trucks. An international racing group will take part in the invitation race. There will be car racing teams and motorcycle racing teams from all around China as well as overseas racing teams for the invitation race, there will be over 200 racing vehicles competing in the rally and the number of riders and drivers will reach nearly 400.
The whole thing is supposed to be tightly monitored with GPS on every vehicle, speeding and dangerous driving will cost competitors points and fines.
Thats's about all the information you can get from this site http://www.atr123.com/Index.html the rest is the usual cultural drivel without having any concrete info or procedures for entering or registering for the race.
Cheers!

Re: The 2010 Taklimakan Rally
Looking forward to the race pictures.....unless I can find a sponser to get me over there to race.
It really is sad we don't seem to have any races or comp ralleys in Canada like they set up over seas.
Re: The 2010 Taklimakan Rally
You would want to get your entry in real soon.
Be interesting to see which international race group they get.
The organizer was not that interested when I approached him on bringing international(Australians) to compete in the event.
I would be wary of investing time and money in this event as it could be canceled at any time as was the case last year.Due to the unrest in Xinjiang.
Hell they still have basically no internet in Xinjiang.
This rally does not go anywhere near the Taklimakan desert.

Really? Then what's the point? There are other interesting places in the area but the dessert is where the action's at!

In all fairness I have seen the "Desert" around Hami while what I saw was not sand dunes it would be great riding.
There is a two day desert race in Turpan later in the year just for motorcycles a better option I think than the Taklimakan rally. It went ahead last year.
Starting to get real hot in some of those places in early June while still dam cold at night.

Why don't you set something up? It should be right around mid-October or about now. It should roughly correlate the timeline of the Canadian snowbird population that makes its way to these parts of Arizona. Since many snowbirds bring their RV's or trailers, they could set up impromptu rest points along the way for the riders. Really, I am not joking too much. For an even more exotic flavor, the race could continue just south of here into Baja Norte or Sonora, Mexico, but the riders/competitors would have to take bullets into consideration (half-joking).
Another rally, but would cut out Canada, could be the Trans-Am Trail from Oregon to wherever it goes.

Living in the desert southwest, I have to agree. Maybe there can be a rally in these parts, Carl--the 'Mychina Moto Open', or the 'Crazy Carl Classic' (heck, they have the 'Terrible Herbst' offroad events associated with SCORE/TECATE-the people who give us the Baja 250, 500 and 1000).
Re: The 2010 Taklimakan Rally
Is the 2010 Taklimakan rally going ahead this year? They got the full internet back a couple of weeks ago.
Re: The 2010 Taklimakan Rally
Umm must be big news in China typical xinjiang its a secret.

LOL LOL I want to participate in both xD
Re: The 2010 Taklimakan Rally
Slightly off topic but not really, I think it would be great to set up a rally for Chinese dirt bikes only. Could be lots of fun and hangin' out.... could probably even find a couple sponsors for prizes n' such!

Re: The 2010 Taklimakan Rally
Well it's on.
Only 44 motorcycle riders though.
Looks like a Chinese woman won the first day.
The Chinese want to make it a full international rally in 2012.

I'll believe that when i see it! They're gonna pull xinjiang out from whatever secret place they burried it? And allow foreigners to win? Like not "you can enter but if you're not chinese it's just for fun" ?
Kudos to that chinese chick for winning the first day!!! Do you have her details perchance? (phone no, culinary preferences etc...)
Re: The 2010 Taklimakan Rally

Re: The 2010 Taklimakan Rally
Thanks Big-D! It will definitely be interesting if it does become international in the next two years. :eekers:
On one hand i'd probably put money on it not happening.. on the other... Who knows?!?! Crazier things have happened in China so guess we'll have to wait and see. :WTFamI
Would be sweet to cover it if it does.. that's for sure!

Well, they have a F1 GP, they had MotoGP, there was DTM and A1, so why not a full grown rally next.
If it would really be an international, well organized event with all the sponsors, fans and top teams participating, I could imagine it has success
Re: The 2010 Taklimakan Rally
What they don't have the Moto GP anymore.
Xin jiang did have that Trans-oriental rally that had competitive stages there a couple of years ago and the international competitors had good words for the Xin jiang stages.
So who knows.

Well the 2010 Taklimakan Rally is over I guess?
Who knows they failed to do any media reports in English to sum up the Rally.
That makes there wish to make it an international rally in 2012 a very strong proposition.NOT.
