I can't search to find a reason or solution.... www.google.com
I would try to find a way out, but there's no maps.google.com
and YouTube, well that's been gone for months.

I think it would be fun if all the countries of the world banned Chinese imports for a couple weeks... randomly... without explanation... with no means of correcting the ban... :foff:

I don't know who's worse at this point... the western powers that cower in fear of loosing a few bucks in China, or the Chinese government that embarrases itself by insinuating it's people are too weak to handle the inconvenient truths of the internet.

A pretty sad lot the whole bunch of us.

slabo, you only see laowais complaining because we actually have a use for google and all its tools. chinese don't complain because they don't give a flying f*ck about google!

in a broader sense, it's the same thing with freedom. sort of...

China is definitely one of those places that has more going on that what is immediately evident. I think it was a kind of testing or poking to see what people's reactions would be.

Either that or Google really is the mastermind behind a secret porn distribution empire. :lol8::lol8::lol8:

I'm using hotspot shield (which is available from anchorfree.com) and Firefox. Hotspot will give you popups but Firefox mostly keeps things under control. Lets me use Google, Youtube, and Hotmail without fail.

Try running firefox with foxxy proxxy add-on. That should get everything working once you everything configurated. :goodtime:

Thanks for the computer tips guys, I gave up on general proxy surfing years ago, it's really slow and the free proxies are too unreliable. Instead, I prefer a direct SSH connection to an outside server running my own proxy (squid). If you custom configure your SSH connection to run on port 80 instead of 22, the speed is a lot faster. You can usually get a shell account on a nix server for peanuts, much better than any kind of proxy or plug in. If you really understand SSH and port forwarding, you can run all kinds of encrypted traffic for any kind of service you need (like BitTorrent).

I use two browsers, Safari runs in normal mode and Firefox runs in encrypted tunnel mode. If I come across a sight in Safari that won't open, I just drag it into Firefox and it comes up through the proxy. The sad part about this is how much more often I have to use the tunnel now. About thirty percent of the sites I visit require the proxy because people use YouTube and other content hosts that are often blocked in China.

Just another day in China.

The trip was planned and set to go just needed some money for a bike and to pay for the trip even had the visa lined up to get in legally.

Aw jeez man I'm sorry to hear that. Friggin' seems hard to get a break there recently. Just before ChinaV and I planned to take our trip last year we had the big ass earthquake in Sichuan which was followed by months of aftershocks and created a whole crap load of issues with traveling through the mountains. Top that off with the goings on in Tibet and it's amazing we got to see anything at all!

I heard they kicked all foreign journalists out of Sinjiang a couple of days ago.

No need to be sorry, it's just my guess because the amount of keywords they are probably filtering for is definitely high. The-bed, X..J##n6, P@l1c, Deer-or-is-t, Ui... made the Dragon suspicious and therefore spitting fire.

While it's totally possible that BigD's post (which could perhaps use some redacting in order to eliminate such future possibilities :deal:) may have set off some kind of trigger, there could be other explanations that might not specifically target MCM or any other site.

I know a couple years back I couldn't access my personal site from China and I hadn't even developed it. Called Bluehost (which could also not be accessed from China) and found out that they were on China's black list and had no idea why. Bluehost, as a popular hosting provider, host lots of people forums and, or course, blogs. Also worth noting is all their accounts sit on shared servers so anything that happens to one account on the server (like DOS attacks) happens to all accounts on the server.

If the big eye in the sky uses broad sloppy strokes in their filtering (which I'm betting they do) like banning by IP, then it could very well be a happless casualty of someone else's stupid blog page.

Regardless, thanks for checking in despite the difficulties. I'm trying to add some new features which will make the trip reports more interesting and informative. Also, trying to clean up the interface a little bit but am not releasing it until I've finished the graphics.
