Hello from Ontario, CA
Hello all,
I just got my new 2009 Konker KSM200 last week. Its my first supermoto and is quite a lot of fun. The most comfortable seating position I've had with a bike so far. I've been using it for getting to work and it is turning out to be a nice city commute bike. I hope to find out more about its abilities after the break in period.

Re: Hello from Ontario, CA
ShineySide,
Those are great bikes for the money. Smell around MCM for QingQi and Qlink equivalents of your bike and you'll find more than a couple discussions on shortcomings, mods and the like. Adding either bar risers or taller bars makes it even more comfortable.. also if you're going to be doing any night riding/commuting with it, and HID setup may be worth considering. Other than that, some folks like to change the gearing ratio so the engine doesn't work as hard at speed.
Other riding impressions so far? Got pics?

Re: Hello from Ontario, CA
Well, since its completely stock with no mods at all it looks just like the dealer pics: http://siriusmotosportsinc.com/images/KXP200.jpg for now anyway. :icon10:
I wasn't going to look at any modifications until after the break in just to give the bike a chance to stand on it's own. Since my commute is completely in the city (no highway) and during the daylight hours there's not much I need to change as far as the setup goes. I can see myself getting a rear sprocket with a few less teeth on it just to make the lower gears a bit more useful. I was really pleased to find out there were so many similar models out there so info on the bike is plentiful and parts are easy to get.

Re: Hello from Ontario, CA
I just got a ksm200 too and am near Brampton. Cool to see people on here from the same neck of the woods, seeing that this is the first thread I've read. I hope to have mine on the road tomorrow and be riding till the sun goes down. This is my first bike ever and can't wait to ride. Hopefully this website will teach me all I need to know about ridng and servicing this neat little ksm.

Dear Konkfrantic,
Welcome to the world's best chinabike forum. You'll find the technical info you are looking for, but a lot more too, as you've already discovered. (I always thought Ontario, CA, was in California...)
Jesus -- a motorcycling virgin and a virgin bike! Do think about what you are about to do to her, and be a bit gentle. She's not done this before either, and you'll need to be sure she's properly lubed and warmed up for the big push. You don't want ride her silly the first time you mount. You've got to break her in.
How do you do that? Here's a nice thread titled Engine Break-in - How did you do it?. The search function is your friend.
Please post up some pix of your bike ASAP, and let us know how your first ride goes.
cheers!

Re: Hello from Ontario, CA
Hey Euphonius,
Thank you for the warm welcome and advice. My Konker ksm200 (Konkey, is it's name) isn't a virgin and came with 1491km on it already. As for me, I am a virgin rider except for riding a total of no more than 4km over the past 3 years on a buddies mini chopper (4 speed with clutch) up and down his street. I have a small support team of 2 riders who have been coaching me far before riding and as of today riding with me. With the added support from great people like yourself here on MCM, I am having a great start on my riding career!
First thing I did this morning was purchase a helmet, jacket and gloves! Insurance and mechanic called me while I was shopping. Got all the paperwork done after shopping and took a taxi to the mechanic to ride Konkey over to the insurance place for a pic 1km down the road. I rode 50km after, 25km each direction up a long stretch of low traffic 60km/h - 80km/h and three stops each way. I had a great time with moderate confindence and little skill on my maiden voyage.
Shortly after, my buddy finished work and I followed him home where he cleaned up and hopped on to his cbr1000rr. We went on a 50km cruise, with a break inbetween and called it a ride. Not too long after my other buddy(gsxr600) came home, and we also took a 50km cruise! Next thing you know, it starts to get dark and I called it a day because of begginner licence restrictions. Day 1 and 150km total, not too shabby.
It was a great day other than my mechanic happened to notice that my clutch will need to be done soon. I didn't feel any slipping, and it seemed to be fine, but what do I know? He's never seen one of these bikes and told me to start looking for parts. I'll see what I can find, and let you know if I have any problems.
Pics of bike and gear will be posted after a good cleaning.
Happy safe riding!

Re: Hello from Ontario, CA
You’re the first person I have heard needed a clutch replaced on one of those bikes at 1491km it is barely broken in. I would change the oil….that mechanic may be setting you up. The wrong oil in that bike can make your clutch slip.
All the part can be purchased online…http://www.konkermotors.com/street-bikes/ksm200.html

Re: Hello from Ontario, CA
Nice to see the Konker Motors site back up again. Last week it was down, and someone posted something here recently about how frustrated Konker buyers had formed a facebook group to organize their efforts. The last thing these chinabikes need is deadbeat dealers failing to support their customers.
I can't speak to the question of a failing clutch in a bike that's barely broken in, but I suppose it's not impossible -- especially if the previous owner abused it. Kronkfrantic, do you have any idea who rode those 1491 km, and under what kind of circumstances? Seems a bit of detective work could be useful right now.
Oh, and many thanks for your comprehensive introduction and the blow-by-blow about your first real day in the saddle. I'm still a relative newbie, with barely a year of riding under my belt, and a day doesn't pass when that I'm not juiced about getting a bike. What a great way to ring in the riding season after the long canadian winter.
cheers

Groan. Movies like that give motorcycling a bad name.
Time for a new thread on great motorcycling movies. I've been trying for weeks to download a copy of Motorcycling Diaries, but the torrent ain't seeding...

Re: Hello from Ontario, CA
Hello konkfrantic,
I've had my ksm200 for a year now and its got about 1800km on the clock. I haven't had any clutch problems at all. I'm thinking/guessing a higher quality motorcycle oil in there would help a lot. Check the sprocket on the back. If you still have the stock one it many be worth while to get one with about 4 fewer teeth on it. It certainly made 3rd gear much more usable for me. Another thing I ran into, and this my have just been me, was that the exhaust pipe aims directly at the right rear signal light. I melted mine by doing about 30 minutes at 90Km/h on a hot summer day and had to replace the rear signals with smaller ones that are not directly in line with the tail pipe. Other than that I haven't had any problems. It sure makes the commute to work more fun and with gas at $1.40 a litre the 3L/100Km I'm getting is really nice!

Is that the movie telling Guevara's trip around Latin America? I have it if you want, i can send you a copy. I've also seen it around some DVD stores around Kunming..
For some reason, engine breakdowns make any he trip all the more memorable.

Re: Hello from Ontario, CA
There were 2 previous owners, the last one put 1000km on it. He was 250lbs and would pick up his son (a teen) from school with it. I can see some melted shoe on the pipe which proves it's been riden with a passenger. The clutch engages pretty far out, and with a small range of travel on the lever. I'm not going to lose much sleep over it, but planning a trip to Royal Distributer in the near future after putting a list together.
As for the oil, buddy claimed it was changed in the fall before winter storage. It seems clean, but would rather know exactly where I'm at. I am going to go on an info hunt for service/repair manuals for I have nothing! I'll check in tomorrow and let you guys know how that goes. It will be raining friday through the weekend which will give me some time to get to know Konkey on a different level (in the garage).
I was even thinking of trying Konkey around in the rain a little, just in case the day comes when I get caught in a shower or even rain.
Thanks folks for the feedback. konkfrantic.

Actually if that bike was not unbranded it could have drove sales off it off the charts, if it actually looked like that bike in the movie. I say that because the movie pulled allot at the box offices and in that it was attended by millions of young men that were likely dragged to see it by their girlfriends for a Friday night date.
The bike looks very good , but unbranded it would never be identified. It is entirely possible that some of those young men did some internet searches on the bike, because most of them may have found the obligatory date night movie uninteresting and in that wondered through it, the bike may have caught their attention.
But it just slipped by most as a anonymous motorcycle, in the movie its was picked up as junk from a scrap yard. That part was the most believable part of the movie for me, but it was actually chosen by the producer because it was considered cheap and disposable, which is also true for the most part.
It is funny because in general you could show the stock version of that motorcycle to everyone that saw the movie and most, if not all of them would say they never seen the motorcycle but in realty they all did.
Could say that the bike was seen by more people then any other Chinese motorcycle….but they are all not aware of it.
-
Re: Hello from Ontario, CA
Sheesh, MJH, now you've got me wanting to watch the damned movie, just to see the anonymous starring motorcycle. Agree it was lost opportunity for the manufacturer and/or importer, but it's par for the course. Chinese manufacturers have no clue about marketing. Zero. Conspicuous branded product placement in a (crappy, low-budget) Hollywood movie? Not in a million years, even though it probably would have been pretty affordable. Did Qingqi roll in the closing credits?
Didn't you show us a Qingqi cameo in a Pink video a few months back? Off topic but I've been listening to Herbie Hancock's latest album, Imagine, and Pink stars on two really excellent cuts. I'd never heard her before but assumed she was a marketing gimmick. But she can sing.
cheers

Re: Hello from Ontario, CA
Speaking of bad marketing, i've often thought it was a missed opportunity for qingqi and others to sell bikes under so many different brands. I understand the reasons for it, but that qingqi QM200 is selling all over the world under 30 different names and as a result no body has ever heard of them. They could be getting their name out there and start building a bit of brand recognition. But they don't even care, so why do i?
Euphonius, you must be doing something wrong. Try [link removed], plenty of seeds!

Re: Hello from Ontario, CA
There was a video on You Tube that showed a young guy modifying his Konker to look like the modified Qingqi in the movie. He created the video and then spliced in scenes of the motorcycle in the movie. The whole thing backed with audio…a Black Eyed Peas track…Tonight’s Going to be a Good Night.
It was subsequently pulled from You Tube….as a violation of copyright.
The Chinese Motorcycle industry is not that mature, it has not developed a corporate credo and direction, that is not to the level of that of others, not yet, some things can happen fast some cannot….that’s why its called maturing.
Those with the rights to the movie will not allow connecting to it for the gains of others.
Product appearances in movies are sold, Qingqi being in the movie was an anomaly. If anything it likely was not a sellable slot to the producer or an oversight on their part? The motorcycle in Charles Angles Full throttle are for the most part ambiguous, except for one shot that holds on the name Yamaha for a second, that second cost allot.
The guy that created the video later claimed he had no idea that what he was doing was wrong, actually he had no idea how powerful an impact it could have on product sales. He had no clue as to the actual capital it cost to get connected to something that millions will see. He was just playing and accidentally launched a video that just happen to be significant enough of a type to drives a products sale.
But why pay for a slot like that if you have no real or adequate distribution or product support? Money talks and shit walks, you would not want to fund it if you cannot back it up. Not all logging companies eventually sell canoes, some just destroy forests.
You know some people spend lots of time and energy and accomplish nothing in the end, others move mountains and with very little effort?

Re: Hello from Ontario, CA
Would enjoy looking at the video. Has the maker posted it elsewhere?

Re: Hello from Ontario, CA
The guy who owned it before me was 240lbs and would pick up his son from school with it (melted shoe on pipe). I guess that would have a serious impact as to the condition of my clutch. It engages far out on the lever in a small range of of travel. I drove it to work last week and had no problems. It's been a ton of fun so far and hope I don't have any probs with it this year. I've put close to 400km on it in just three days riding and enjoyed every minute of it. I'm hoping to find detailed info on what type of oil I should be running and how much. I would like to change it even though the previous owner changed it in the fall before storage. I'm going on an info hunt today because it's raining, or I would have been on it right now. I'll post some pics of "Konkey" and my gear soon after I give it it's first good cleaning. I'll stop by later in the week with an update and hopefully some pics.

I bet its just the cable that needs adjusting...

Re: Hello from Ontario, CA
The mechanic said they tryed adjusting it the best they could, and that was all they could do for now.
