I'm always looking for someone to ride with in China. If anyone is in country or is coming to China send me and email or look me up on skype.

you have been getting some miles on the Shineray alone, I can only imagine when/if you meet up with someone there.
The Shineray loves the miles, but riding is always more fun when you have someone with you.
I'll be riding down to Shanghai from Beijing for the MotoGP.
After that, I'll probably be riding up to Ulaan Baatar either in May or June.

Sounds like a fun tip Jim. Make sure to post a ride report. I'll be riding North from Guangxi to Beijing in late June or Early July. When I get back to Beijing I'll come check out you shop again and pick your brain about a few things.

Ain't much to pick, but if your up for a ride to Ulaan Baatar, that might work out timewise.

Where are you based. I'm planning to get a bike in August or September. Gotta have an international licence to get a Chinese licence I've been told. I'm in Chongqing and where there aren't too many foreigners, especially bike owners.
Hello Chinggis,
You are in the paradise of chinese motorcycling. Most of the manufacturers are in CQ or around.
Regarding the driving license, China doesn't acknowledge the IDL so you will have to pass the exam and your national DL (translated) should be enough for that. Rules are slightly different from one province to another so better to check with some locals.

Chinggis,
I've got a buddy in ChongQing who's been trying to get a license there for a few years and he says it seems unusually difficult. He may actually move to Chengdu just to get away from what he considers excessive bureaucratic (even by Chinese standards) red tape.
Maybe there's something he's missing...I hope so. Have you met anyone who lives in ChongQing who has successfully gotten a Chinese license?

Hey Butch man! I didn't know it was you!
Nice to see you here. How are things going in Shanghai?

P.S. - You might want to check the link in your image to RDMC, it goes to imageshack.com er' sumtin'.

CC, the good folks who make the rules here in CQ don't seem to see the big picture very clearly.
They're desperate (well, they're very, very, very keen) on foreign companies investing here and there seems to be a strong drive to attract inward foreign investment. However, this doesn't seem to have translated into reduced red tape and bureacracy at foreigner grassroots level yet. So, yes, it seems that getting a licence legitimately is difficult, car or bike, although car appears to be easier.:confused1:
However, I am led to believe that there is a legitimate way of getting a car or bike licence with the assistance of a local company. They've already had a look at my licence document from South Africa and say they need an IDP, for both types of licence. By the way, I've also heard from Jialing that the the JH600 can be registered in CQ.
If your friend is able and willing to wait until August before packing for Chengdu, I will be returning with an IDP and will put the theory to the test. If it all works out I'll become a fully paid up member of this community with my own JH600.
If your friend is a member of this board ask him/her to send me a private message and I'll see if I can put him in touch the the right people.
Hi Butch and the RDMC Shanghai crew.
Thanks for the welcome. I'm really new around here and have been hovering in the shadows since arriving in CQ in August last year. I've also been out of the bike scene since 1990 but I'm hoping to officially rejoin later this year.
