Buying a motorbike in Shanghai/ JLmoto Experiences?
Hey, I am in shanghai and looking at buying a motorcycle. I have heard about one store, http://jlmoto.taobao.com . I was wondering if anyone has dealt with them before. Do their bikes come with proper reg. + fa piao? quality of bikes? Let me know!
Also, let me know if u know anywhere or any way i can buy a bike to use in shanghai, preferably >250cc.

Dear Tasty,
Welcome to the forum. The link you've posted is not working. Please take a couple of minutes to spin through the many, many posts in this forum that focus specifically on finding, buying, registering and operating a motorcycle in Shanghai. It's possible, and legal, but unless you have a trust fund it's not for the faint of heart. Once you've read in and are up to speed about what's possible, lots of us will pitch in to help you make good decisions and have the best possible experience.

arhgh sry about that, i fixed the link now. Thanks for the comment, ill try read around on the forum for more info! And WOW thats a lot of work just to get your A plate. But i was curious about that specific store, jlmoto. And the good news is I actually live outside of the Inner ring road, basically in the outskirts in shanghai so it won't be well..insanely impossible haha.

Yeah, O.o i know! and fairly reasonable price-wise for second hand bikes with such a low mileage. Have you heard of them before? speak your opinon! let me know!

Glad you asked this question "tasty" - I've bumped into this taobao shop a few times while browsing for specific bikes. The selection/prices do seem "a bit too good to be true".
Anyone know anything about these guys?
Are they running a shop selling "one owner bikes, but that owner doesn't know where their bike is"? (quoting Euphonius) :naughty:
Where is Tian Ma? Is that down in ChinaV's neighbourhood?

--Where to you get your bikes?
--Can your bikes be registered and legally owned in China?
--What evidence do you provide to assure buyers that these bikes were procured legally, imported legally, and are not stolen?
--Do you assist buyers with registration?
--For customers in Shanghai, do you help to obtain Shanghai 沪A plates or do you obtain 外地 plates (i.e., from Jiangsu, Anhui, Zhejiang or other regions)?
--If a customer asked for a "fake" plate, would you help to provide it? How much?
--What percentage of your customers ride their bikes legally in China, meaning with legal title and registration?

Good questions. I'd love to see answers from JLmoto. These are things anybody should be thinking of before buying a used bike in China. There are lots of stories of people buying bikes with duplicate/fake plates. Also people should be aware that an imported moto needs a "Green Book" to be legally registered.

This one cracks me up big time, "If a customer asked for a "fake" plate, would you help to provide it? How much?", nobody in their right mind would make a statement in a public online forum....

The original poster of this thread asked about the bona fides of this company, thinking that MCM members might have some ideas. I've not seen members raining down with praise for JLMoto, or even much in the way of views, positive or negative. Given our collective interest in a healthier market, these are precisely the questions that people shopping for new or used bikes should be asking, and they are precisely the questions that JLMoto and any other vendor should be prepared to answer, including the one about fake plates. Every expat I know has asked me about fake plates. Someone is out there selling them. And contrary to your comment, some sellers do in fact post openly about how to "buy" drivers licenses and plates.
You seem to know details about the Tianma operations, and you seem to be strongly suggesting with your "dreaming" comment that what they do is perhaps not 100% legal or ethical. We also know from your previous posts that you are in the industry and are very keen to see it become more professional and transparent and safe and reliable. If you indeed know about underhanded or illegal business practices that might hurt your fellow riders, why not just come out and say it? You could save your fellow motorcyclists a lot of trouble and time and help make things better.
In any case, tasty and anyone else tempted to buy from JLMoto or "at Tianma" should definitely be asking all of these questions and more. You wouldn't disagree, would you, Pal?

I agree, the questions created are very important, and should definitely be answered before buying a bike. And if JLMOTO is selling legit bikes they should have no problem answering them. If only there were more people that dealt with them before!!

Visited several big bike shops in Shanghai and the scooter market (Jiaoji Road), quite a few shops sell "fake plates" (not the HK8888 plastic novelty plates) but who would risk cruising around with a "fake plate" anyway?

Have you ever visited the Tianjin black market shops & dealers offering dubious big motorbikes and hi-po cars?!

ps: certain shady Shanghai big bike dealers offer bikes on order, you specify make, year, model, color and they go looking for them through contacts in overseas countries.....
pss: sometimes emails go around in Chinese offering dubious big bikes with pics and specs.... TIC!

OP if you are after a good quality motorcycle that can be LEGALLY plated in your name, then JLmoto is not the shop to deal with.
1. Questionable backgrounds (probably stolen and definitely shipped through the backdoor in Shenzhen).
2. Serious concerns over the legitimacy of the claimed mileage on many of the bikes offered.
3. All plates offered through JLmoto are not yours, as they are Waide plates and such like.
4. Once you buy, you are on your own in terms of any form of warranty, and possibly plate issues down the track.
5. Seriously, if you research the market on imported motorcycle brands that LEGALLY import into China and the prices which those bikes are sold at, then it's too easy to tell that JLmoto sell ILLEGAL motorcycles!
I have a mate who bought two bikes (BMW R1150GS & KTM250) from Jimmy (JLmoto) at the TianMa circuit (been there many times myself). The BMW had questionable mileage from the get-go based on age etc. It's since had to have a complete tranny rebuild at RMB40000 (all imported parts and rebuilt by 'Ulli' at the Go-carting shop (end shop at TianMa)([addit: March 2014] shop now closed). I accompanied one of my German friends to JLmoto when it was time for the bikes bought from there to have the re-inspection certificates renewed. I could only laugh on the inside listening to the BS excuses Jimmy was telling my friend as to why the certificates couldn't be renewed.
Dont' just take my advice - want some first hand advice about JLmoto offerings then go speak with Ulli (Ulrich) anyway he's the German engineer with the first shop along from JLmoto there at TianMa - he'll tell you some horror stories of bikes sold by JLm.
If you want prices on any of the foreign brands that sell in China just ask (though Lao Jia Hou has prices in the For Sale Classifieds thread), I can assure you those prices are often double-triple what JLmoto might advertise the same model for.
LEGAL foreign motorcycle brands in China include, Piaggio, Benelli, Harley-Davidson, BMW, Ducati (all of which sell >250cc motorcycles). The Japanese & Taiwanese brands (Suzuki, Yamaha, Kymco) generally are limited to <250cc, though times change and some legal imported bikes through official distributors are available again refer to deal from dealers section of this forum.
LEGAL Chinese motorcycle brands in China providing >250cc motorcycles include JiaLing, CFmoto and to a lesser extent ChangJiang (though the latter is not without its issues).
As Pal said, I'd avoid JLmoto with a 10' barge pole. Of course if you ask Jimmy (or the other guys working) at JLmoto, they'll sugar-coat all the answers to any questions you put to them.

There are from time-to-time some legal alternatives that are for sale through the likes of Taobao. There is a legal Yamaha TMax 500 maxi-scooter for sale for RMB170,000 (which is an outrageous price IMO), but it 100% legal, with all the papers, inspection certificate etc. So it can get a legal plate. These motorcycles are a premium because it costs a shiet-load to get them LEGALLY in the country and compliant. That might put JLmoto's prices in perspective! They'll sell a Tmax at 1/3-1/4 that price

tasty, if dual-purpose (enduro) is you type of ride (worthy consideration given China's terrain outside the cities) you might like to consider a Yamaha YBR125 dual-purpose trail-bike, or Shineray X2 or X5, or the JiaLing JH600 600cc single, perhaps the new Qianjiang/Benelli 600GT (2014), or else a BMW F650GS / G650GS at al. at much higher pricing. If scoots are your idea of a ride, then go with CFMoto's CF250T-ViP Fashion (licensed Honda Helix clone), or the newer and all-together different CF250T-6A Jetmax maxi scooter (an awesome scoot for the money IMO) or even the domestically available Jetlux which has the same engine shared with the Jetmax.
If money is not a consideration for a scoot then how about a Kymco Xciting250 or a Piaggio MP3 250 3-wheeler. If road bikes are your tonic of choice, then CFMoto have a CF650 twin cyclinder road sport somewhat similar looking to the Kawasaki E6-N and they will putting out a 650cc tourer later this year, followed by a ADV 650 sometime later (2013/14). CFmoto might also put out a larger displacement maxi scooter, though this is an unconfirmed rumour at the moment. So tasty there are other alternatives, some of which offer a product at a more affordable Chinese price or a Chinese made product or more for an imported one. There's still much more on offer for LEGAL options with a wider variety of price points than there was even just a few years ago.
Then there is the CFMoto - KTM partnership and what will come out of that...

bikerdoc, good to hear from you these days. are you saying the CF650 twin is available in china, meets China3 and can be registered? lots of buzz about that bike and the occasional sighting, but has it been officially launched? I think one of our shanghai boys saw one recently but was warned off of it...
Would love to see some competition in that mid-bore range, if for no other reason than to keep Jialing on their toes.

I was actually just looking for something small, like a Honda VTR250. something that has enough power to cruise but still nimble enough to handle in the city. I guess to have a motorbike in china you either gotta' go illegal or have a million dollars! I'll look into what you said, and do some research about locally produced bikes.

All of us who own legal bikes in Shanghai face this dilemma. Yes, it's a lot of cash out of pocket for the plates -- probably 48,000 rmb for a downtown plate and 7,000 for a suburban plate. But here's the deal: the plates are transferable, and limited in supply and, hence, knock wood, appreciating. The plate I bought a year ago for 42k is now 48k. If I stopped riding today, I could sell my bike as a package at (current value of bike) + 48k, or I could delink them, sell the bike to a farmer for whatever, and sell the plate for 48k. Such is the nature of Shanghai's auction-based system. Supply and demand.
Several concerns: 1) It's a lot of cash to raise. 2) Since bike plates track the value of car plates (because they can always be transfered to a car), what happens if suddenly Shanghai releases a ton of car plates and the market rate drops? 3) What if the policy changes?
It's easy to understand why lots of folks just go illegal, but that can and will end up being a very costly proposition if your luck runs out and you have an accident. Under Chinese law, if you are illegal (unlicensed, unregistered, uninsured or under the influence), you bear 100% of the responsibility in an accident, regardless of the actual circumstances. So those odds suck pretty bad. And as we've seen in many cities around China, the police are getting much more assertive with random stops, checking for license, registration, insurance and sobriety.
Still, it seems like more than half of the bikes on the road in Shanghai appear to be illegal. Lots of folks playing the odds.

Welcome to MCM, and most if not all information you need can be found in the pages of MCM. Spend some time digging, and use the "advanced search" function, which is a link below the largely useless search window that appears on all pages.
From your post it's not really clear what you are asking. Are you licensed? Do you have legal residency? What kind of "sport bike" are you seeking (and, ahem, why the suicidal bike choice?)?
Once you've spent a bit more time browsing the many forums and threads, please don't hesitate to ask specific questions!

I want to point out that there are several options in terms of legal motorcycles in China from locally made CF650NK, CF650TR, BJ600 at around CNY36000 - CNY49000 through to Hayabusa GSX1300R for CNY260000. Additionally you will need to factor in taxes and any payable duties if the motorcycle is imported, and then there is the cost of the license plate which in SH costs upwards of some CNY70-90000 depending on where you read the information. The plate is a one of fee though, and one will likely get ones money back... appreciate the infos....
but actually im planning to buy an imported one(2013 kawasaki ninja 250) to be exact i've seen some store in taobao that offers this bike(import from thailand). The cost in america is around 5000 usd but they sell it there for 47k+ rmb,.sounds legit? base from my rough computation seems like a fair value considering the tax. I saw some post that if that bike cost almost double the actual price most likely its legally imported. And they did mention something about the plate, they said they can apply one for me but it will be registered in jiangsu(3k rmb)
would appreciate if i can hear your thoughts about this.

2013 kawasaki ninja 250..... about the driver license part i had this interesting conversation with my friend and he told me that he knows someone who can take care of my licensing stuff. All i need to do is to pay 2-3k rmb and give him the necessary requirements and its done,(anyone heard about this?) I know it will cost me less if i do it myself but i have very busy sched and have no patience to go through the hassles:P.....
p.s.
its just a super sport looking bike and maybe a bit faster than other 250's (not a rocket ship):)
and yes, im an expat in shanghai, been driving for almost 3 years now with my scooter (illegally). I wanna upgrade to a better performing bike and this time i wanna it to be 100% legit.
