Hisun is introducing its 250cc twin.

Hisun is now selling in the USA under its own brand name, does that mean that all the other brands can now go away? That has been the consensus for some time, that these made up brands simply need to go away and be replaced with the actual manufactures brand name.

I've been watching what Hisun prioduces and can not figure out one thing: how come no one has figured out, except "Dinli", that they could use their 500 or 800 cc ATV engines on a motorcycle?

The only Dinli I see is a twist and go.

LOL….they really do not understand what that actually means, the word should be success, not excess as in way too much. Also they have the 250cc sport bike listed as an automatic, actually DOTautomatic. (sic) on their alibaba page. Then detail it as a six speed…


They also have the Iron Horse bikes listed, American Iron horse filed for bankruptcy in 2008. The motorcycles up to then retailed for some outrageous amount like 40k, they were built around a 124 CI S&S engines.

If the "Aprilia Mana" managed to find their "place in the sun", I believe that there is room for other bikes of similar construction. Plus, Chinese manufacturers don't have a wide selection of big displacement, ~50 HP engines. It is not hard to me to imagine a Chinese bike with a design similar to Honda NC 700 X, with "stretched" ATV engine and CVT transmission.

The HiSun 250 is being offered through Hisun USA and also through Bennche as the Rival 250.

They have it with a 378lbs dry weight compared to the Kawasaki Ninja 250 that has a 375lb curb weight.
Not much of a Rival now is it….
Rival has 18.5kW (25.16hp) MSRP $3,999.00
Ninja 250 has 24 kW (32.64hp) MSRP $4,199.00
Ninja 300 has 29kW (39.44) and its curb weight is 379lbs its MSPR $4,799.00


The $800.00 more buys allot more with the Ninja 300 and that value is also retained at resale, the Rival being priced at only $200.00 less then a Ninja 250 is laughable.

They can beat the Japanese factories on price, but unfortunately they cannot beat the Thai factories prices.
So the request for more affordable is already here, it is coming out of Thailand.


What I would like to see and would seriously consider is a Kawasaki Z300 and it likely will be offered and will likely be priced around $4,500.00USD.

I like the Honda 500 twins as well, but really wish for a smaller lighter bike and with different look, maybe a 250 twin that looks like the new MSX Honda mini?

I am not that into sharp edges, angles are ok but I prefer smoother design elements. I think the Rival is actually ugly, it looks thrown together and cheaply designed. I believe that Honda 125cc Vertical is rated at 9.7hp (7.2kW) and it has the PGMI honda fuel injection.

You'd need to be mentally defective to buy the Hisun over a Ninja! :eek2: Is it really down to not being able to beat the Thais on costs or is it greed? You'd be stupid even to buy the Hisun for $2,999.00.

I really can't understand why these Chinese copy brands think that they can win market share with a bike that is less than 10% cheaper than a proven absolute favorite in its sector. Really they need to make a bike which is pretty much damn well nearly as good for 33%-50% of the price.

It is a copy, you can see that in the frame and engine side cover...But its results are it is heavier and with less power? Red flags on that bike, the graphics on the white bike look like a creative use of masking tape?

The other thing is they look like they used industry standard brakes, those brakes look like the same shitty brakes used on all the other cheap Chinese "sport" bikes.

If you are a Kawasaki dealer then you should contact Kawasaki and ask for information about the patents on the 250 and 650 models and then see were you stand with these. Kawasaki dealers have the rights to the sale of the products that are patented in their markets others cannot sell them or copies of them. If dealers see loses in sales in local markets they can and should address that, they need to get a statement from Kawasaki on the rights of the designs and technology within the bikes. Then if right are in force with respect to those, then they can track sales though registration records at the state government level. If the bikes are not legal to sell then all profits on sales of them represent recoverable damages.


Simply contact Kawasaki and find out if the bikes designs have any patents pending on them. Then do a search with the state DMV on the WMI which is LWG, they can tell you how many are or were sold in your state and even the zip codes they were sold within.

It is not that complicated a design patent is enduring, that is what it looks like, the form it takes, its appearance. These are filed and renewed they can last forever and are enforced legally.


There are also mechanical patents and those are not enduring they only last a set amount of time and then expire. The internal workings are mechanical the appearance of the case though can have a design patent. There is no patent on combustion engines, but a new valve type can be patented for a set time and in that not copied by others until its mechanical patent expires.


The reason is that nothing mechanical should be held exclusively in rights by one for ever, the mechanical workings can be held for a set duration which is long enough to recover the cost of the research and development, then they become, when they expire, open to others to make. That insures all get access eventually and nothing holds back the advancing of mechanical devices and the duration of protection ensures that those that invest are able to recover the costs and also make a profit if it is truly something new and improved.


However the looks or the appearance they are not open unless the patent holder releases them. That is because the appearance is highly identifiable to the brand that holds it and owns them can for ever own the rights.


Government also regulates, they set standards that are for safety and also limit environmental impact.
So that explains why a manufacturer cannot simply start making an engine from 1970 that may have been very popular, it may not meet modern emission standards. It also explains why a company does not make a 1965 copy of a Ford Mustang, it is because Ford surely holds a design patent on its form, that being it shape, its appearance, you could make the 302 V8 but it would need to meet emissions, the engine is open to make but the form of the vehicle is not.


So in that they can copy old engines all day long, but they need to meet emissions, they cannot copy the appearance unless the manufacturer did not patent the design.


In this case the exterior as in the appearance is not copied, the mechanical parts would need to have had a patent search to ensure they are not protected and that all mechanical patents have expired. Be aware most manufactures patent all deigns elements even the shape of knobs and keys and buttons are often covered under design patents, they do not want to be copied.

It is possible that the Rival does not violate any patents, but I would be suspicious that it does.
