Panniers, racks, side bags
Hi,
Im going on a 2 month long trip around China. I know i will need to take quite a bit of stuff with me and now Im looking for a cheaper alternative to the aluminum boxes (cheapest i found, with rack, cost around RMB2000). Im wondering if anyone ever used one of these http://item.taobao.com/item.htm?spm=...&cm_id=&pm_id=
I have YBR250 but they make them for nearly every bike there is in China ;) whats the quality like? Of course Id use them with another box on the top as they are only around 24L each.
also Im thinking about this set http://item.taobao.com/item.htm?spm=...id=14016514148 but am not sure if the massive ADLO 982 boxes can handle the trip hanging on the side like that. Anyone used these boxes? any ideas about the quality?
Im olso considering side bags like these http://item.taobao.com/item.htm?spm=...id=19496399677 these http://item.taobao.com/item.htm?spm=...id=10280026108 or these http://item.taobao.com/item.htm?spm=...&cm_id=&pm_id= but cant convince myself towards bags as they are easier to steal then boxes
any info and suggestions are much appreciated
cheers
p.s. I promise Ill post some pics of my new baby bike here as soon as i take some

No one has any info about those ADLO boxes?

Re: Panniers, racks, side bags
bikerdoc has posted about ADLO quality in the past. You'd have to fish through old threads.
I've got a mid-sized top box that works pretty well, and has survived a couple of drops. Bought mine in now-defunct Jiaoji Lu Scooterville, but I'm sure they are still selling well in the relocated market farther up in Zhabei. There are quite a few sizes. Mine won't fit even a single helmet but bikerdoc has one that probably fits two helmets....
cheers!

For the adlo box setup have a look here:

For your first option there's someone on this forum who installed those on his qjiang 150, have a search around see if you can find it

I think that 360 kuai rack is a good option, mount a couple of solid wandefu boxes (fake pelican boxes) onto it and you have a winner for about 1500. ChinaV has some great info on those here:

Re: Panniers, racks, side bags
Thanks felix,
Ive been looking at those boxes and its obvious that they are heavy duty and will survive a proper abuse. The only thing that makes me think about this set up is the way they open. It must be real pain in the ass to keep stuff in while you open the box as everything probably wants to come out. But can have everything, especially if you watching the price. I think Ill order them tonight and ask my local tailor to make some bags like Pfaelzer has here for his tourfellas http://www.mychinamoto.com/forums/sh...ll=1#post12425

Re: Panniers, racks, side bags
I've got Wandefu panniers on my KLR in California, and you are right -- it's hard to keep things tidy with the panniers opening to the side. It's not completely unmanageable, especially if you add some keeper strings to keep the lids from opening beyond 90 degrees. Another excellent strategy is to employ bags inside the panniers that match the interior dimensions. Just open the pannier and remove the bag...
cheers!

got case liners? this set-up works great with my Pelican Caribou cases on my other bike: http://cariboucases.corecommerce.com...ases-Pair.html
for serious off-roading, nothing beats soft panniers nuff' said....

Re: Panniers, racks, side bags
Dear Modron,
Nice find! Those fake Pelican fakes actually look quite good, and the price is great. I think I paid 500 rmb each for my Wandefu fake Pelicans.
cheers!

Re: Panniers, racks, side bags
Nice find modron, those boxes might just end up making their way onto my too! If only someone made a good rack for the qingqi...
Regarding getting stuff in and out of them, firstly it's no easier with the adlo boxes, secondly you can just 3 kuai reusable supermarket bags or similar as liners. That way when you park your bike for the night you can just carry the two bags to your room, and leave your tools and whatever else locked in the boxes.
Those caribou box liners are super cool, but at $45 they have no place on my bike...

Re: Panniers, racks, side bags
I bought these boxes already, they should arrive soon. I know they will be too big probably for my YBR but i can work around that ;) I like them cos they have 4 clamps to hold everything inside. Once i get them ill write few words about quality.

Felix, try this guy http://shop60546848.taobao.com/?spm=...00126.3.XG7Yi8
when I talked to him he said he will build rack for YBR even though he didnt have it. Maybe he can build one for you too.

Re: Panniers, racks, side bags
Hey thanks for the tip on that shop, turns out it's close to xi'an so i might drop by there if i get a chance.
How are the boxes?

Re: Panniers, racks, side bags
Seller has some problems with getting them from his supplier but he promised me that he will get them this week and send to me asap. If not ill get them from another guy on Taobao

Re: Panniers, racks, side bags
I received the boxes few days ago. They seem pretty strong and durable, a little rough edges but nothing really serious. I never saw pelican boxes but i heard that you can drive a car over them and they wont brake. Well I wouldnt recommend doing so with these ones but you can easily jump on them and they will be fine. Ive checked the waterproofness in the shower and it seems ok ;)
They are big though! its going to be hard to put them on my ybr, especially cos my bike is still on warranty and I dont want to lower the exhaust. There will not be quick release for me, they will be fixes but its ok since ill only use them on this trip and then take down
Still need to figure out a way cos my holiday starts soon ;)
will post some pics once done
