Hey Folks,
Anyone got any idea where I can buy new; zongshen's or other dirt bikes in shanghai? I am not looking for pocket bikes or others small things, just 125-200cc stuff for actual road driving.

Have you seen the posts for the ZCM? Read through the fighting :gun_bandana::swords: and there are a few people who can probably help you out--a couple if you are properly licensed, and a couple who promote wrecklessness and lawbreaking, and debauchery if you are not properly papered!:eekers:
:lol8::lol8:
Here is one of the threads:

I am not looking at a map of China right now, so don't know how far you are to any of these guys, but they could probably point you in the right direction; or contact our mychinamoto leader, CrazyCarl-he has connections :mwink:...
Shanghai is a notoriously unfriendly city for motorcycles. Even if you could buy one you might not be able to register it or bring it home?
Where, more exactly, are you?
CC
Like Beijing, I'm sure that it is tricky and expensive to register a motorcycle within the walls of central Shanghai. :rolleyes1: Some cities in Jiangsu or Zhejiang provinces near Shanghai surely have these dealerships, but unless you have time and patience it could be annoying. You are welcome to come to visit us, we know where all the dealerships are. It also costs 300 RMB :icon10: to register any bike under 250cc in our city, but who knows how much in central Shanghai or even if you can (2000 RMB in Beijing for example).
After you bring the bike back to Shanghai, a willingness to turn right, a friendly attitude and the ability to wear a helmet and not be able to utter one word of Chinese could serve you well.......:lol8:
On a serious note, can one register a bike anywhere in China, and be legal, or at least the bike is legal? Is there a reason for the discrepancy of registration fees, or would the bike not really be legal for Shangai?
That is an interesting question. I believe that the bikes are legal in other areas, even if they are from different areas. This has not been fully tested because with such a small amount of Chinese riders and foreign riders attempting to ride around China. If I was living in Shanghai I would attempt to buy a bike elsewhere, but register it in Shanghai despite the cost, because it would be better than another area's plate. Failing that a Jiangsu or Zhejiang plate would be better in Shanghai, as they are neighboring states. There may be a rusty old law that does not allow bikes to leave the province where it is registered, but it probably isn't enforced.:rolleyes1: Or some police officers might have differing opinions on this...Quote:

Thanks Guys,
I do live in the Puxi inner city area (downtown). I have been driving my Chang jiang for 2 years here. I know how strict they are.... I spent 11 days in jail for screwing around.... Now I am completely legal.
I am Not going to plate the bike localy, I am half chinese and have family in china and will use thier residence to register the plate. I will have the same restriction as CJ's with outside plates but in a smaller less outstanding package.
I work with CJ Sidecar of Shanghai and Beijing. I help them with sales and after sales customer service... Plates and registration and such are just a daily thing for me.
As far as Shanghai is concerned the law is stated that ALL motorcycles 2 wheel or 3, scooters(not LPg's), are not allowed in the city limits. However anyone who lives here or been here can see this is not strictly enforced or enforced at all. They do "sweep" for non plated bikes and foreigner without licesnes occasional, especially in the summer months but as with anywhere, dont push your luck and do not give the cop a reason to stop you, and if he does, dont give him shit.....:riding:
Againg thanks for the help, I like this site.
Right on! Another Chonky Mother Fucker! :lol8:
If you've got a few pics of your work and winning smile sitting around, we have a new searchable forum gallery which is waiting for some member pics.
11 days in jail eh? Must have been fun. Would like to hear more about that sometime is it's okay. Do you have a blog or summat?
Also, being in Shanghai and riding CJs you must know a dude who used to be on here named Butch. What happened to him anyway?

He's still around it think...(this is the guy that was running the Red Devils MC in shanghai right???), never met him (yet). I do know that one of his old bikes ended up with a friend of mine in MoGan Shan, a guy by the name of Mike, he owns the "Lodge" an brish style pub at the summit....
We can help you with getting the bike. But registering is better as local to you as possible, you can register it here with us, but Shandong plates in Shanghai? Only the cops know what they think of that, nobody else does. :lol8:
11 days in jail, too harsh I think. :eek2:
We are here for you, just ask, anyway we can help we will...
Hey Carl,
Yeah, I have no blog or anything but the long story short.... I was driving my Chang Jiang without a "D" class license. Well no Chinese license. I was working on it but it was such a long process I just joined the ranks of other guys who didnt have a license and still drove it.... well i got caught and so i did what an local in my position would have done I went to jail for what was a ten day detention. The officer that is in charge of your case is supposed to be the officer that picks you up by 12:00 pm (noon) on the Tenth day. My guy forgot to show so I was not released. i spoke to the guard at 1:00 pm on the tenth day and asked what was happening he just started to laugh and so we had a little altercation, so they did not call the officer until the next day to remind him.... that how I got the extra day.... Stupid right???
Street cred right!?:gun_bandana:
ShanDong plates would work. . I currently have Mongolia(china) plates on the CJ and the police seem okay with the that. Its a loop hole in the Shanghai law (maybe China) so as long as I dont challange them and give them there "face" all is cool. I even have a few cop buddies....if you can't be them join them. As far as my new China Moto I have my wife and her families HuKo's and my families huko's so at least the family name is the same.
Actually the food is quite good... I still have not found Mantou(pingying spelling?) as tasty as in the joint.... but dont be fooled, they dont have a foriegner Detention center. They have a website and everything for it.... but they lie, they told my wife that was were I was going but I was sent (were all foreigners are sent in Shanghai) to the Max-security prison in Pudong by the airpot. 24-7 lock down in a 19x8 meter cell with 15 other guys and no beds. Probably for my own good, they keep really close tabs on everything inside.
Sounds OK for Shandong plates then .
Have a look into what manufacturer's bike you want, chat and read up on what people say about the bikes, makes buying easier, less window shopping. I personally don't really trust Zongshen, but everyone likes different bikes.
I would always prefer a joint venture bike, a Chinese and Japanese manufacturer together. I suggest the new Qingqi 250:

Mostly based on Suzuki technology, made in Jinan too, only 100kms from us!
The Yamaha (Jianshe) YBR250 is really cool, much too expensive for 23,000RMB :eek2: ( I would pay 14,000-15,000 for it though and be happy)..

you hit the nail on the head... the Qing Qi 250. Just dont know if I want a super moto or dual sport configuration:icon10:
Tricky problem, but maybe if you live in a city, motard?
Either way, get the 17" wheel combos and a 21" Front.
An enduro version with 17" wheel set would be great!

Hey Carl,
You mentioned a 250cc gy from QingQi but I can only find a 200cc on any of the websites. Is there a 250?
Winston
The 250 is a new model and nobody is exactly sure when they will start shipping. I talked to a parts guy that gets QingQi stuff for me and he said they will not be available until late spring or early summer.
I will purchase one as soon as they are available, so I'm hoping they start production SOON!
Cheers!

Winston,
The 250 looks exactly like the 200 but with a larger engine. Initial pictures looks like it's an oversized 200 but Jean-Pierre claims it has to unique technology in it so we'll see.
If you haven't seen it already, we have stats and a couple pics here:

If you are still looking I know where there is a Zongshen and Shineray dealer in Shanghai. They had 200cc dirtbikes. They aren't real friendly though. Was quoted 8000 rmb for either a Zong or Shineray 200 cc.
I bought a Sachs Madass instead because I could not find a dirtbike.... Please send me the address, I always have room for another bike :icon10:
Non of the bike shops, except mine are friendly... just their way I guess.... althought the guys and girls at FYM on Zhong Shan Bei(now jiao Je le and Jiao Tong lu) lu are really nice and helpful...(but you have to becareful ad ask the right questions
