I like the trackstar/retrostar because of the styling but I'm kinda tempted by the Apache because its got good reviews/comments on the web.
I've just stumbled on the CPI SUV which looks great but I cant find much info on the brand or the bike, Im a bit concerned about spares/repairs?
Any advice/knowledge greatly appreciated......its all new to me, left it till I'm 41 to get a bike!! cheers
Sinnis is my suggestion...you are right around the corner as you wrote, so that would be my choice due to spares, etc. We don't have that brand in the US (a few of their bikes are probably available here under different brand names (same OEM in China), but the Sinnis name has been written about here on MCM for several years now, so they probably survived the worst part of the economic meltdown to stay viable and more importantly, available. Top of your list is my suggestion.
Just to add-the Apache is a solid bike (we get those in 200 and 250cc form) made by either Qingqi or Shandong Pioneer (they are related, in some weird Chinese way that Chinese companies are related). Both the retrostar and trackstar are great looking offerings, so cross CPI off your list (I am sure CPI's are ok, but still thinking about your proximity to Sinnis)

I would also check out Keeway…they have some good offerings.

They also have same as cash financing for 24 months.
Re: CPI Suv for first bike?
The SUV is manufactured by Yinhe/ Galaxy.

MJH, I think you would appreciate Sinnis's Trackstar 125 and Retrostar 125 due to their styling.
Re: CPI Suv for first bike?
Most of what that is offered in the UK is fairly well supported, and the distributors are all pretty much screening for quality. Its a stretch for me to relate to the “L” class, however if I was to buy one I would look at lowest prices first and move up from there. I do not think there is much “performance” difference in these 125’s.
That said…the Sinnis all have the K157FMI engine, that’s the Suzuki 125. That being the case I’d be smart and get a Lexmoto Street 125 with the same bloody engine for $1,079.00, that my advice if you want to save money.

Actually, that would probably be the perfect bike for a first time rider, and at a good cost compared to some of the others, such as the supermotos/enduros offered by all these British brands. At 40 years old, and a short commute, this could just be the bike for a long time. My 200cc TMEC is a commuter only (15 miles each way), and until/unless it falls apart in a catastrophic way, I will continue to ride it. If it breaks, and I need a new bike, I would seriously consider another one at $1600 for a brand new 2013 model (I bought my used 2009 model for $800). For about the same cost in the UK, taking economies of scale into account, these standard bikes are about the best "bang for the buck" for the intended purpose for a more "mature" rider like myself (I am 43 years old).
I noticed on the Lexmoto page the 'Arizona' 125 offers the reliable and common CG125 Zongshen engine vs. The Suzuki-cloned 125 on most others.
