Suggestions for my newly bought 2012 CF 650TR
Attachment 18795Attachment 18796
Recently purchased a second hand 2012 CFMoto 650TR with only 4,000km on the clock. Pictures attached from mountains outside Xiamen, she's in decent condition. I'd like some advice on the following:
Tires; Glass puncture in the back tire so I need a new set. I'm looking at Pirelli Scorpion II, the Continentals that come with the 650 TRG, Metzeler Tourance, Michelin Pilot Road 4. We all know the roads in China are crap, but I also want something that will handle the expressway. Also, some people are recommending I go up from the standard 160 to 170 for the back tire, any opinions?
Heat; this bike heats up quite a bit, not to the point where I think there's a failure but it could be an issue. I bought some Motorex coolant, and also an upgraded fan off Taobao, wondering if people had any experience with this issue. It's not that bad for me but I could see a pillion complaining about it.
Exhaust; heavy and not particularly cool sounding. Any ideas on a replacement? I've seen the thread compilation, wondering if any other ideas on this front.
In general I am pretty happy with the bike and lord willing I want to take her really far this winter, the tires are my most pressing concern. God bless and thanks for reading!
Re: Suggestions for my newly bought 2012 CF 650TR
Lots of places selling Pirelli Angels last time I looked, seem like a hard wearing but pretty grippy sports touring tire.
Those engines do run hot, but it's not that bad, especially with winter on its way.
Heard good things about Kawasakai Ninja 650/ER6F bolt on replacement mufflers. Although in China I wouldn't bother due to legal problems with modifying the bike.
Re: Suggestions for my newly bought 2012 CF 650TR
Hi
Had the Conti on the TR-G from new only lasted 8000km on the back.
Decided to fit the Michelin Pilot Road 4 GT very good and lasted 24.000km back with 28.000km front.
But get the "GT" version.
Back tyre on the TR-G is 180.55.17
Should fit your bike ok

PROBLEMS:
So, in reference to above, I put Pirelli Scorpions on, no problem. BUT I'm having some other issues. Namely:
-The brakes are sticking at times. The CFMOTO dealer wants me to spend 1700 + 1200 RMB to upgrade to the 2014 J.Juan Brakes, but I'm mostly annoyed that these brakes suck.
-The engine vibrations are really hard to deal with, especially on a long ride.
-I'm getting error code 48. The CFMOTO dealer brushed it off as "mei shi" but I'm noticing when that error code flashes the engine sounds like it has a cough.
-The bike heats up very easily in city traffic.
Tomorrow I am taking the bike to another CFMOTO dealer for a second opinion. I like the bike for 22,000RMB I spent on it but if this engine is likely to shit out on me then I want to flip this thing out as fast as possible. I took it on a long ride to the Tulou in Fujian the other day - Fujian's mountains have awesome riding. While I enjoy riding a "real" bike, there were several close calls that I had at high speed which made me reassess the value of having a large bike in China. I'm starting to lean towards acquiring something no larger than 400cc. My problem currently is budget, and I'm a big dude at 180 cm and 108 kg.
I like my CFMOTO but it's a bit of a pain for the traffic situations we face on the regular.

Re: Suggestions for my newly bought 2012 CF 650TR
50cc 100cc 500c 1000cc bikes.
you can die on them all ?
In most cases it's the rider is the killer not the bike?
A need for speed is a big killer in China.
Just be careful if you can.
Good luck ride safe.
Re: Suggestions for my newly bought 2012 CF 650TR
Waiting for the JJuan brakes to arrive in Xiamen. COntinuing to get the 48 Error code, but for some reason it doesn't pop when the dealership sees it with his computer. The engine sounds very rough and loud lately but the dealership says this is normal. I'm wondering what I can do to properly diagnose the bike and try and preserve the life of the engine. It has not crapped me out yet but I had a weird feeling about it.
Re: Suggestions for my newly bought 2012 CF 650TR
I need help. Recurring engine "cough" may be an issue with the fuel injector. Cfmoto dealership in Xiamen is being *really* unhelpful, since it runs they don't wanna do anything about it. I bought this bike for long runs but I am scared of having a serious breakdown. Error code is 48. Anyone have any suggestions so I can diagnose whether or not me and this bike have a future?

The brakes have been fine for me. Sounds like they just need a bleed or have dirty pistons. Should be a free fix.
-The engine vibrations are really hard to deal with, especially on a long ride.
Shouldn't be a problem, again the vibes aren't so bad for me, though not on par with a Japanese bike. Try checking the torque on all bolts, especially engine frame bolts.
-I'm getting error code 48. The CFMOTO dealer brushed it off as "mei shi" but I'm noticing when that error code flashes the engine sounds like it has a cough.

Sounds like the bike is running a bit lean. Error 48 is the Lambda (oxygen) sensor on cylinder 2. That sensor needs to be replaced as the bike's ECU doesn't know what fuel mix it needs. There may be a way to override this by using some kind of default ECU setting.
If it's possible try to get your money back or sell up. You clearly cannot deal with a Chinabike. You need something more reliable. Go to Sundiro Honda and order a CBR300R, it will suit you much better and unlikely miss a beat.
Re: Suggestions for my newly bought 2012 CF 650TR
While I appreciate the tough love, I think the way forward for me is to make it work with this bike. The CBR300 won't fit my touring needs. Today the dealership put a fuel additive in which seems to have improved the situation, I will revisit them replacing that sensor for me, the question is : will that be an expensive fix? Are they going to need to take the engine apart to repair it? What if I don't fix it? Do you know about how to override using ECU? When I say will it be expensive I am not looking for a way out of spending money, I am thinking maybe go to another city's dealership in order to handle it.
Re: Suggestions for my newly bought 2012 CF 650TR
I'm not sure exactly about overriding the ECU with a base setting, but I recall there was something about it on a muffler upgrade thread, I'll have another look, but look under maintenance and then maybe under street and see if you can find the thread, it's within the last year. As far as I can tell a Lambda sensor is pretty much just plug (bolt) and play. I think it is somewhere on the exhaust pipe, looks somewhat like a spark plug with some wires coming out of it, sometimes if you unplug it then the ECU might go to a default safe setting, so that's worth a try. Or it could just be a broken wire or connector.
The problem is that a Chinabike doesn't suit you, or you're gonna have to toughen up and learn wrenching skills quickly, develop keen Chinese negotiating skills and a thick skin. Honestly, if you are a Chinabike rider and you believe a Chinese mechanic and spend 2000 plus yuan on a new set of brakes when you could have cleaned out a caliper, greased a piston or bled the brakes then you're in for a badly hammered wallet down the road.
I understand, I was like you when I was a new rider, the slightest lack of bike perfection would give new sleepless nights. That's why I'm suggesting a new Honda with a warranty.
You really need a CB500X. But I'm not sure it's easily available, and if it is then it's probably 70,000RMB or so, which is why I suggested the CBR300, although I know it isn't really dual sport capable or high enough displacement to be ideal.
Anyhow the part listed on Taobao is 430 yuan, plus proabably 50 yuan postage. It's listed here
Re: Suggestions for my newly bought 2012 CF 650TR
Your point is well taken, but I had my mechanic do exactly that, take the brakes apart clean them bleed them etc and they were still sticking. I spent about three days at the dealer on different occasions. The new brakes are perfect so I don't mind the investment

The brakes on the CFMOTO are pretty much the same as low-end Japanese bike brakes (as is the suspension and electrics) I don't really understand how they couldn't have been sorted almost for free. They are almost exactly the same as you'd find on an entry level commuter bike in the west.
Having said that, any improvement over that is a worthy investment, especially in China!
Re: Suggestions for my newly bought 2012 CF 650TR
SO I'm going to revive this since I've tried a lot to fix the TR to the point where I can sell it, but I'm continuing to get 47&48 errors. I really don't want to sell the bike with this continuing problem on it.
I actually had a very good Taiwanese mechanic who fixes Harleys and BMWs take the bike apart. We replaced the fuel injectors and the two oxygen sensors. I am continuing to get this error light. Actually another 650TR rider in Xiamen is also getting this error light. It appears ONLY when engine braking and prolonged periods of high RPMs in low gears - for example, in crappy Chinese traffic, or going downhill. The other day I went up and down a mountain three times. EVERY time I went down the mountain, the light went on, and the nature of the engine changed for the worse. Got to the bottom of the mountain, turned the bike on and off, rode all the way up no problem. Turn back around and the engine was all fucked up again.
My mechanic is confused and so am I. What could be happening? How could engine braking be causing temporary oxygen sensor failure?
Re: Suggestions for my newly bought 2012 CF 650TR
Hi Steve
Are you hoping to sell the TR to some Chinese person? if this is the case then just disconnect error light if you can problem solve.
Have you tried contacting CFmoto direct either here in China or try the OZ importer for help?
Re: Suggestions for my newly bought 2012 CF 650TR
Do you have any information as to how I could contact them directly? Dealership have called their linked mechanics and nobody is sure what the issue is. As to disconnecting the wire, I just don't have it in me to screw somebody like that.

From the land off I don't care a shit and screw you, you don't have it in you come on Steve get real mate.
Re: Suggestions for my newly bought 2012 CF 650TR
An error light, the motor running like crap under certain riding conditions? You turn it off and back on to reset it and it runs fine for time?
Sounds like a bad 02 sensor or emission control unit. Based on driving conditions such as elevation temperature, humidity etc... (learned via the 02 sensor) the 02 sensor sends the ECU a signal to adjust the fuel mixture. Looks like ZMC mentioned a lambda sensor. Never heard an 02 sensor called that till now. Either way, I would be checking my pipes, sensor and ecu.

Sadly I replaced both sensors at a cost of 900 RMB from the CFMoto shop. The ECU is looking like the likely culprit. Another 1700 RMB cost of not taking prince666's advice. :puke:
