new China rider... new rider :)
Hello!
I'm a new rider, daring to get started in China.
Fortunately, I'm in a quieter area. And so far it's going great.
I'd love advice on gear for me.
I'd like to get protective gear. like an armored jacket and pants and gloves.
So my first question might be to know what forum branch might be best for that.
Where would that discussion fit best in here? :)
I'm located west of Zhengzhou, if you're curious.
I mostly use the bike to commute to a nearby town regularly on the weekends.
I'm slowly getting braver with travelling in the area. Winter isn't helping :p.

Re: new China rider... new rider :)
I picked up a speed and strength armored Hoodie from revzilla. They shipped it all the way to China for free. Either way, it's nice for summer and spring. When it gets colder you can just wear something over it. I got some c2 slip on knee pads on taobao cheap. I'm guessing you already have riding boots and gloves? Either way, it's cheaper on taobao then pretty much any where else. I would ask a Chinese person to help. They can make sure it's real and negotiate the price down. I bought dianese touring boots on taobao for a pretty good price. A lot of people on here wear LS2 helmets. To me they seem cheap... I don't trust them. Maybe mine was fake? Either way, you can get almost any on taobao.
Get comfortable and explore! It's amazing how much stuff I found near where I live that even the locals didn't know was there. From temples to caves and ruins. You never know what you will find!
Welcome! If your ever in jilin let me know. I'll take you out exploring.

The higher priced LS2 helmets are OK nowadays, but sometimes bit heavy. Better check HJC.
Gear from Scoyco or motoboy are also usable, even not high end.
Good experience I had also with Nerve in China.

I might disagree with this a little. I buy a ton of stuff on taobao and get mostly real stuff. When i do call a seller out on it being fake he has no problem giving me the full refund. JD is a little over priced because of the "real" guarantee. Not to argue though as everyone has their own experience, I can fully communicate with sellers and ask questions also.. it might be much easier for me then others.
As far as LS2 goes, my brother likes his helmet too. They just don't feel quality to me. On JD and Taobao you can pay 1rmb for shipping insurance in case you need to ship it back. That being said you can always give stuff a try.
Keep in mind revzilla.com will ship to China for free if you are buying enough stuff. I have picked up several things from them. They shipped me a NEXX XD1 helmet, a pin lock visor, dianese riding shoes, sena communication kit and a few small accessories for my bike with free shipping.
Shuben and Prince have been riding in china much longer then I though. I have only been here a few years.
Have fun shopping!

Thanks so much.
Yes, I like Taobao :).
I'll keep exploring, and remember you if I make it to Jilin!

That's great to know.
Yeah, I get your point about Taobao and/or JD.
I'll keep my eyes open.
Knowing the brands you all have trusted before is a great way to start.
I don't have Chinese friends that ride. But I can get them to help me make sure stuff is genuine, now that I know some things to look for!
Re: new China rider... new rider :)
Cheap knockoff stuff in China isn't that bad.
A good quality rain suit is going to cost you ¥300 but you can buy a decent knock off for ¥80... knock off every time.
A helmet is never worth risking, find a reputable brand and source as mentioned by others here.
Riding Apparel: Unless you're going to invest in Aerostitch, BMW, Klime, etc. most of the mid-grade China stuff is actually pretty good. You can buy two complete sets of gear from Nerve ( 1 mesh for summer and 1 regular for spring fall) for the cost of 1 pair of BMW gloves.
If there's any chance you have the opportunity to hit the motorcycle market in Guangzhou, you can get some excellent stuff for very little money. Plus you can try it all on and be sure of what you're getting. A lot of shops there get samples from production runs for name brands and I've walked out of there with gear that would have cost a fortune if I bought it back in the states.
Cheers
