Hi !
I plan to rent motorbike to visit the terrace fields of Yunnan area in China during February 2015.
I looking for the address of renters, an idea of fees, the interesting routes... any useful information are welcome!
I already rented motorbikes easily in Vietnam (without driving licence) but I have no idea how the things work in China...

You'll likely need to arrange a rental bike through a MC tour company. They will arrange everything, insurance, temporary PRC DL since your overseas DL and IDP are not valid in PRC. Usually as a tourist though, you would likely need to ride with a guide provided by the MC tour operator or else ride on a organised tour. There are other possible options, some of which may involve illegal activities - which I believe should not be promoted or supported on MCM, as such activities impact all foreign riders in PRC and motorcycling in general - which faces enough discriminatory regulations and practices already!
If one wants to ride a MC here, do so legally even if to do so might prove challenging.
To get started try using the MCM seacrh engine near top right corner of the MCM webpages or here else you may wish to try searching using the likes of a more general search engine e.g. Goog.le and just add 'mychinamoto' to the keywords.
Yeah, it's not legal technically speaking. There are no people or very few renting bikes, so if you are on a tight budget you'd need to buy and sell. You can go with a MC tour company, but this is like having your wallet raped.
Personally I'd think about taking China off the list, mostly it's an unnaviagable industrialized hell-hole with the biggest retard drivers known to man. Maps are near usless as about a third of the roads are rebuilt every year becasue they let massively overloaded trucks smash them to pieces and the GPS is out of date or wrong. However with some stunning scenery, friendly villagers which are far off the western tourst trail stuffed between these places if you've already been to the rest of Asia then well maybe it's for you.
However really Taiwan is better, it's Chinese speaking and cultrally, probably has better food, great roads, legal paperwork and maybe more authentic (as in China they smashed down every nice building and smashed every cultural relic in the cultrual revolution), just limited in size. Also think about doing a tour of India if you haven't already. Such a spiritual place, although some terrible drivers too, but legal unlike China.
But if you're determined and an experienced rider PM me and I'll give you tips and make you aware of exactly what laws you're breaking and the possibile consquences. Please don't bother to PM me unles you have over a years riding in Asia and 10 years experience total.

to give you some idea of cost to arrange all the legal paperwork for you to ride in China works out about 2000 RMB (£200 or $360) just to get you legal with a temporary Chinese driving license and you will be fixed to a time frame i.e. day you entry China till the day you exit China and a fixed route?
I think the best way is to contact a tour company just to arrange a Chinese DL which can be done and buy a bike here in China which is plated and insured , bikes start here NEW from about 8000-10000 rmb . My bike of choice would be the Yamaha YBR GK at about 12000 rmb and could be sold after your trip for 8000 rmb with about 6000 km on the bike . That's only 4000 RMB losted (£400- $620) and you can ride places you like to ride to and not on a guided tour ????
Now Yunnan province IMO is one of the best provinces to ride in so much to see with great scenic views, roads can be very good to very bad.

Another expat leaving here recently sold his ride, less than a year old, 2000km for approx 25% of the original purchase price new.

In fact, I will need 2 motorbikes just for few days (about 4) to move from terrace field to another one using mainly the small tracks!
Just to be free to star, to stop and leave when we want and where we want ;)
I ride a motorbike for 5 years (include 2 years in Vietnam and I love this)
So the best solution will be MC tour company or corneradventures.com?
(You don't have a cheaper solution?)
