Wu Xia, one of China’s greatest motorcycle racing ambassadors, has been seriously injured whilst guest riding in a 600cc Superbike race at Japan's Twin Ring Motegi circuit.
The very popular, and deservedly so, young lady racer came into contact with another rider causing her to have a horrific crash.
Despite the top-class medical facilities at the circuit she was immediately transferred to a local hospital for treatment and an operation on her damaged spine.
One day after the operation, Wu Xia has regained consciousness and can recognize people around her.
The Doctors have said that she has fractures to the fourth section of her cervical vertebrae and sections 6, 7 and 8 of her lumbar vertebrae.
Wu Xia is now recovering and receiving physical therapy treatment at a specialist hospital for bone and sports injuries.
Currently she has no feeling below her waist, in her hands or fingers, but she is able to carry out simple communications with people.
The Doctors have advised Wu Xia’s Team Manager that if her recovery is smooth after 2-3 months of treatment in Japan she will be able to return to China for further recuperation.
They are hopeful for a full recovery saying that they have previously treated Japanese riders with similar injuries who sustained no long term effects and were able to return to the race track after a period of treatment.
We all are hoping and praying that Wu Xia will be similarly fortunate and will once again be able to bring her charm and skill to the racetrack.
Good fortune Wu Xia – we are all thinking about you.
