Shanghai Plates : Possibility to swap to a new bike ?
Hey all,
A quick question for all the experts in this forum : I have the Shanghai hu A plates (the more-expensive-than-their-weight-in-gold-ones...) on my bike and all the bike + plates purchases were done 100% legally, I have all the necessary papers in my own name.
If I'm buying a new bike (and selling the current one), will I be able to transfer the plates of my 1st bike to the 2nd one ? I'm sure it would involve a lot of paperwork and time lost in different offices, but does anyone have the experience of it ?
Where should I look, would the dealer of the 2nd bike be able to do the procedures himself even if the first bike was from another dealer, etc. ?
Cheers,
Fred

The rule in Beijing is that after 3 years of ownership, yes, you can switch to another bike. I would guess SH would have something similar. But, also like Beijing, it is probably damn difficult to find out what the rule-truth is.

Fred, I've never heard that Shanghai imposes any time limit like that which LJH has mentioned. And I don't think it would be too onerous of a transfer, either. A day or two at most. Either go to the Vehicle Management Bureau -- it's the big one out in Pudong -- or find someone who specializes in this. Not sure if a call would yield the info you need.
PM me if you'd like a contact who might help.
cheers

Thanks Euphonius, I'll go to the local police station in my neighborhood first, they might know/help me. If not successful, I'll go to Pudong.
In the meantime, if anyone else has some experience about this in Shanghai, please let me know !
Cheers,
Fred

Fred,
Unfortunately, this has almost nothing to do with the local police, and I seriously doubt they'll be able to tell you anything useful. You'd be better off going to a Traffic Police station in your neighborhood; these are different from police stations (派出所) and are are often where damaged cars are taken after accidents. Not sure where you are. There's one under the North-South Elevated on the south bank of Suzhou Creek. But even there you'll likely get vexingly conflicting stories about how to transfer a plate.
Frankly, my hunch is that all roads lead to the big Pudong VMB.
cheers!
