Win a chain lube system! Scottoiler & Strathclyde University collaboration project.
Hello everyone,
My name is Alberto and I am a student at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland.
I am a part of a collaboration project with the Scottish motorbike chain lube systems brand 'Scottoiler'. Our group is carrying out a survey in order to explore the motorcycle culture in China and its riders maintenance practices.
Since foreign riders living in China are equally important as the Chinese bikers, we contacted the administrator of 'MyChinaMoto' forum and got the permission to conduct our research among the members of this motorcycle forum.
We are happy to give away Scottoiler V Systems automatic chain lubricantion systems to three lucky survey respondents.
This opportunity will last only until next Tuesday 22nd of May. However, there might be an extension given, if we do not achieve the required number of respondents.
Hope you enjoy the questionnaire. We have put in all our effort :)
Thank you for your time.
Please follow the link to the questionnaire:

Alberto, it's cool that you guys have an interest in expanding Scottoiler's business. I wish you every success.
Be aware in a country where you can buy a domestically made Taiwanese brand chain for 50RMB, your scope is pretty limited.

Re: Win a chain lube system! Scottoiler & Strathclyde University collaboration projec
Thank you so much for your words! Yes, it's actually really challenging but we are very happy to be working with the people from Scottoiler and see what it can be done.
Everyone is helping a lot, so I just can say thank you to all the motorcycle community, both here and in China.
All the best.

Hi everyone,

Please, if you could take 3 minutes of your time to help in this interesting research we will be very helpful.

Re: Win a chain lube system! Scottoiler & Strathclyde University collaboration projec
Best of luck with the research! It's good to see quality motorbike gear showing an interest in china, though i doubt many bikers here (including myself) would bring themselves to spend the money quoted in the survey to replace a task that takes 3 minutes a week. Still i'd love to have one!
Couple of notes on the survey:
I'm surprised not to see Qingqi in the manufacturers' list, it's a fairly common chinabike
I live in xi'an but there's no provision for that, so i wrote shanxi which is the closest.

Re: Win a chain lube system! Scottoiler & Strathclyde University collaboration projec
Hi Felix,
Thank you so much for your words of support and comments. I really appreciate it. All you guys are really nice and helpful.
I have one Scottoiler kit here at home and looks really nice! I just need a motorbike! I wish you all the luck in the VSystem raffle!!
Oh, I've already added Qingqi to the survey list. Sorry for that! We tried to include all the brands we thought were popular, but there are quite a few! :)
As for the town, one of our Chinese classmates designed the options. He was working a lot on that as well, trying to cover all the territory, but it's difficult to include everything as well. Hope everyone can choose the closest place to their locations if we didn't add it.
Now that you mention the brand model, since Qingqi bikes are up to 250cc, how could this affect to the chain maintenance? I mean, do lower power ouput mean applying less oil since the chains are smaller? Also how can the higher temperatures in China can affect the oil? I guess it will need to be more viscous. Correct me if I'm wrong. I was just wondering what kind of local adaptations to Chinese bikes Scottoiler might need to consider.
Thank you for everything,
Alberto

Re: Win a chain lube system! Scottoiler & Strathclyde University collaboration projec
Honestly, i would have expected you to be a bigger expert than me in matters of chain lubrication!
I can't really answer you question as it's been 7 years since i rode a bike in ireland, so i can't remember how my chain oiling habits have changed. I just know when my chain looks dry i spray lube on it. I don't know how engine or chain size affects that, maybe someone here does.
Cheers,
Felix

Re: Win a chain lube system! Scottoiler & Strathclyde University collaboration projec
:) We're getting experts slowly! I've been doing some research and I think I already got what kind of modifications should be considered.
By the way, thank you again for pointing out 'Qingqi' brand.
It's an interesting manufacturer. They seem to be involved in motocross and enduro events and making some adventure and cruising bigger bikes.
Cheers,
Alberto

Please share, i don't think we've heard about those on the forum! A bigger ADV bike from qingqi, i'm very interested and i'm sure i'm not alone!

Re: Win a chain lube system! Scottoiler & Strathclyde University collaboration projec
Oh no! I'm sorry! I don't think I have expressed myself correctly! I was referring to bigger bikes in relation to the average 100cc Chinese models. I'm afraid they don't have anything bigger than the Ligers 200-250cc and one cruiser model. Shineray, Jialing and Lifan have also 200-250cc ones. I was expecting Jincheng to be making also something bigger as they have that model for the Dakar Rally though.
The only news I have about bigger Chinese bikes are the Zongshen Cyclone 500cc, but it was only a prototype, the CFMOTO 650 Naked and TR and the Loncin LX650 street racing, but I guess that are built for the export and is not news. I'm sorry I don't have confidential information... :)
Sorry again!!

Thank you so much slabo!
It is absolutely true. :) I'm already editing it.
-
Re: Win a chain lube system! Scottoiler & Strathclyde University collaboration projec
Same is true for Sichuan, generally considered SW China.
Thanks for posting up the survey guys. you have a difficult job trying to research a foreign product and pry money from the hands of some of the world's most notorious cheap bastids! :icon10:

Re: Win a chain lube system! Scottoiler & Strathclyde University collaboration projec
Xinjiang is in NW China.I'd say Gansu, Qinghai are too.
I think your question on" how much do you spend on chain purchases" is umm.
When I purchase a new chain i will also purchase/replace both sprockets.Replacing a worn out chain and not replacing the sprockets at the same time is false economy.
I look at the total price of chain and sprockets.

No, thanks to you so for letting us post up the survey here, Carl! It is true that is a challenging task! Almost an herculean job :)
Hope this will help the guys from Scottoiler and spread the leisure motorcycling culture in China as well!
The investment of brands such as Ducati, HD or Victory in China is good news for all the motorcycle related brands, including small ones such as Scottoiler!
We have to revise our Chinese geography knowledge! Thanks for pointing that out. Already editing!
All the best,
Alberto

Thanks a lot bigdamo! I'm just checking Xinjiang, Gansu and Qinghai locations and it's true they three are located in the NW of China.
We are very sorry about that. We should definitely have double-checked everything with our Chinese groupmates.
Good point about the price of chain and sprockets. It is also true that the normal thing is to buy chain and sprocket kits and replace them together.
We should have been more accurate when drawing up that question.
Thanks a lot guys for pointing out all our mistakes.
By doing this, the respondents who are taking the survey now will find less difficulties and our results will be more precise as well.
Best,
Alberto

Alberto,
Do you know that most mechanics in China have a pot of used (black carbonized and filthy) engine oil that they brush onto their customers chain as a free service?!! :lol8:

Re: Win a chain lube system! Scottoiler & Strathclyde University collaboration projec
Hi everyone,
My apologies for not having posted yet a final deadline. I understand your complaints perfectly. We are still waiting for a response from Scottoiler. It seems that our contact has been on holidays recently so I will write them again today and announce the deadline as soon as possible, hopefully tomorrow at latest.
I promise to give you an answer as soon as I can contact the company.
Sorry again on behalf of my group mates and Scottoiler.

Hi ZMC88,
I had no idea about that! I had heard some anecdotes about local mechanics stating that a motorcycle was in perfect condition when the bike sound was clearly really bad or motorcycles carrying 3 people and ducks :) Brand such as Scottoiler should definitely go for a higher segment of the market :)
Thank you for sharing this info!!
As I just posted, I am already working on contacting Scottoiler to give you a final deadline and announce the 3 winners.
Since today is bank holiday in UK, I hope to get an anwer tomorrow.
Sorry again about that. I feel really embarrased about it.
Thank you guys,
Alberto

BMW riders would be the ideal target for this product, unfortunately most BMWs are shaft-driven, but yes the more knowledgeable and higher end of the market would be the most likely target.

I totally agree with you. That is indeed the conclusion we have came up with in our report. Moreover, Scottoiler has recently become an official co-branded BMW Motorrad accesory available for the BMW F800GS, F650GS, F800R, S1000, and compatible with ECE and US models. Not sure if Chinese models are different though and if most of the BMW models sold in China are shaft-driven or chain-driven.
Cheers,
Alberto

:) You are very welcome! Unfortunately I don't think the gecko would survive the trip to China!
I will reply to all your questions just now on your e-mail address.
