Can't be sure what type of CDI unit you have but one of the connections goes to both the ignition switch and the kill switch. This connection is earthed by either to turn the engine off by earthing the CDI unit.

The usual colour for the kill switch is White and black.

There might be a short to earth in that wiring which means the ignition will be permanently disabled.

The stator can be tested by identifying the wire that goes to the CDI unit from the magneto. This comes from one of the coils in the stator, a fatter one than the rest. This is the exciter coil that is used to provide 60 to 90 Volts AC to the CDI box. Place an AC voltmeter between that wire and ground, turn the engine over smartly and you should see at least 50-60 volts there at cranking speeds.

The usual colour for the exciter coil output wire is Blue and white.

Who makes your bike? Does the bike turn over but not start? Or does the bike not even turn over?

Also worth trying is shorting/connecting the clutch starter safety switch (if your bike has it). Those switches are notoriously cheap and get lots of weathering.

I hate electrics! When it's not something obvious, going thro' the whole methodical palva with the multimeter to verify all components is just soooooo tedious (and time away from the pub). And then it turns out, a few squishes of WD-40 into all the elec connectors (especially the rats nest in the headlamp) is an instant cure! ...just as I was about the call in a Priest.

There is a tech article on elec fault finding with flow charts, the works. At first glance it looks difficult but stick with it and you will find the cause - click here for the pdf download.

You have to be very methodical and write down everything you do like a check list cos if the thing goes on over several days you just forget what you've done and/or miss something (trust me, I've been there). It is a pain in the butt, but stick with it and you'll get there. You can have one heck of a good drink once you've cracked it!

If you aint got a multimeter, B&Q do a brill digital one (forget analogue) ideal for motorcycles for about £7.

I have the Haynes motorcycle electrics manual - worth every penny of the £16!

PS. If you take the bike to a garage they won't do anymore than you can - except a big invoice. Especially if it's a muppet place.

No. And £3.99 to be exact.

    B&Q 09W11 and mucho biggero 400mm x 75mm x 40mm and a nice sized 45mm x 20mm LED display that's easy to see. Includes all the wires, of course.
