08-08-2019, 08:31 AMHi,
I know this has been asked before, but I can't find any recent (up-to-date) threads on this site or elsewhere.
I'm moving to Beijing in December from Europe and I'd like to bring my bike with me if possible - it's a BMW R1200GS Adventure (1200cc). Is it currently possible to import a foreign bike and, if so, what are the likely costs? I assume I'd need a local agent to help with all of the paperwork (especially as I don't speak Chinese)?
The bike is currently registered in the UK and I have a UK motorcycle licence. Currently I have only a tourist visa for China, but I will apply for a resident permit when I arrive; my wife is already working in Beijing on a work permit, so it should be no problem for me to get residency as "accompanying family". I don't know if any bike import/registration would need to wait until I have gained residency. We are living between 3rd and 4th ring roads, Chaoyang Park area.
Any knowledgeable, current advice would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Marius

You can't do it. Sell it, or store it, and buy something when you get to China.

ChinaV is absolutely right, unless u r a diplomat. But you are lucky because a lot of new bikes available nowadays in all price ranges. But consider: what costs nothing is nothing. If u want to by a used bike better look into the foreign community because the locals have the habbit to put lots of gimicks on their biked in unprofessional ways. Also many bikes are poorly maintained.
Especially in the expat community is coming and going. So there are permanently some bikes for sale.
Final hint: even if cheaper -> never go for illegal bikes with fake plates. Nowadays u might be faster deported than u came in.
