OK, this has little or nothing to do with China, but man is this Dutch diesel cool or what??? What a great bike that would be to have in China!!

Love my JH600, but I want one of these too, despite the strange little exhaust pipe which looks like it came from the drain under my kitchen sink....

    cheers

interesting design, though J if you had one of these, you'd likely have to replace the exhaust with something more appropriate. The first time you try to do any water crossing with it as standard that pipe is just going to flood with water... the other thing is with the exhaust and muffler facing forward then it's prone to acting like a hook, that can snag on anything poking out of the ground. That's really useful for offroad, bush tracking... sooner or later it's going to snag on something... branches, tree roots, rocks and the like.
otherwise it is an interesting design...

Considering the quality of Chinese Diesel, it wouldn't be great to have it here

That exhaust configuration created a lively discussion between bikers over beer - yet nobody came up with any rational idea why it is designed that way. Is there something unique about diesel?

Someone elsewhere commented that the forward pointing exhaust is actually for the turbo - not the muffler. Here is the another photo of the bike which could serve to answer some questions (if not raise more).

Recently 'Royal Enfield' 350cc and 500cc Motorcycles are now being sold in the Philippines.

Royal Enfields are still in production in India as 350cc and 50cc 4 Stroke Singles.

Whilst reading Wikipedia entry http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Enfield_(India) I learned that they had produced a version with a Diesel engine!

Royal Enfield Super bike taures (Diesel)

Royal Enfield in India built a diesel motorcycle. A 6.5 hp (4.8 kW) industrial diesel was installed in the frame of the British-based Royal Enfield bullet 350cc. . Its fuel consumption was around 200 miles per imperial gallon (1.4 L/100 km; 170 mpg-US). Initially street mechanics were mounting this engine in used Bullets, like retro Royal Enfield Bikes, with the 350 cc retrofit engine developing 18 hp (13 kW). On seeing the success of these bikes; Royal Enfield started manufacturing Bullets with the diesel engine and named it the Taurus. The Taurus was available with an electric starter. It was characterised as very noisy, slow and with excessive vibrations. The company subsequently stopped its production.

    Diesel motorcycle

    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A diesel motorcycle is a motorcycle with a diesel engine. With a traditionally poor power-to-weight ratio, most diesel engines are generally unsuited for use on motorcycles which normally require low weight, compact size, high RPMs and rapid acceleration. In the 1980s, NATO forces in Europe standardized all their vehicles to operate with diesel fuel. Some forces had fleets of motorcycles and trials were conducted with diesel engines on these. Air-cooled single-cylinder engines built by Lombardini of Italy were used and had some success; achieving similar performance to gas/petrol bikes and fuel economy up to 200 miles per gallon. This led to some countries re-fitting their bikes with diesel engines.

In 2005, the United States Marine Corps adopted the M1030M1, an off-road motorcycle based on the Kawasaki KLR650, and retrofitted it with an engine designed to run on diesel or JP8 jet fuel. Since other U.S. tactical vehicles like the HMMWV utility vehicle and M1 Abrams tank also use JP8, adopting a scout motorcycle which runs on the same fuel would ease logistics.
Further development by Cranfield University and California-based Hayes Diversified Technologies led to the production of the Kawasaki KLR650 based motorcycle for military use. The engine of this motorcycle is a liquid-cooled, single-cylinder four-stroke which displaces 584 cc and produces 21 kW (28 bhp) with a top speed of 85 mph (136 km/h). Hayes Diversified Technologies mooted, but has subsequently delayed the delivery of a civilian version for approximately US$19,000.

In India, motorcycles built by Royal Enfield could be bought with 325 cc single-cylinder diesel engines because diesel fuel was much cheaper than petrol (gasoline) at the time, and of more reliable quality. These engines were noisy and unrefined and not very popular because of lower performance and higher weight penalties. The engines were originally designed for use in commercial applications such as electric generators and water pumps.

As of December 2006, several companies produce diesel motorcycles.

Much of the logic and reasons for Royal Enfield producing a Diesel Engined Motorcycle, should be applicable to CHINA, I would have thought?

After a Quick Google Search, it seems China is producing a reasonable Diesel Motorcycle engine:-

2011 NEW DIESEL MOTOR ENGINE SUPER BIG POWER(30HP)

    Specifications

    DOHC, 4 VALVE, WATER-COOLING ENGINE
    30HP BIG POWER, HIGH TORQUE
    BALANCE SHAFT
NGK PISTON, DID CHAIN, NSK BEARING, KOK OIL SEA

But is this DONGBEN, a REAL Diesel engine?

Nah, as I found some SPECIFICATIONS for same engine image:-

Famous model new design 300cc 4VALVE super big power motor/ATV/Racing/go-kart/tricycle engine Famous model new design 300cc 4VALVE super big power motor/ATV/Racing/go-kart/tricycle engine

    Product Details:
    Stroke 4 Stroke

    DOHC 4 VALVE
    NO ROCKER ARM RACING POWER
    All Provide BALANCE SHAFT
    300cc 22KW 30 HP
    COOLED SYSTEM WATER-COOLED

No Real Diesel Engine has CDI ignition!

    Try again:-

This Company has produced a REAL Diesel Engine, specifically designed as twin Cylinder for use in a Motorcycle.

The engine is of conventional mechanical design, optimized for this particular application. Lightweight reciprocating components give minimum vibration and reliability is assured by good design, high duty materials and advanced manufacturing techniques.

A deliberate decision was taken to use mechanically controlled fuel injection for the current engine, employing a purpose-designed injection pump. For the future, electronic control will allow further enhancements in performance. The engine is capable of operation on either diesel fuel (mineral and bio-diesel) or aviation kerosene.

The result is a simple, compact, lightweight power unit of more than twice the specific power output of conventional small diesel engines.

The usable engine speed range is also much greater than other diesel engines. Peak power of some 50 hp/litre is developed at around 5800 rev/min, with usable power available up to well over 6000 rev/min. This is combined with excellent low speed torque in a way which is unique for a diesel engine. The motorcycle thus has outstanding drivability with less need for gearchanging, which aids both on-road enjoyment and cross-country performance in the hands of expert and less experienced riders alike.

The technology is immediately transferable to other applications requiring small, lightweight, high speed diesel engines.

Now if a China Manufacturer, could come up with something like that as a basis for further development such as Processor controlled CRDi, with VGT boosting for more power.

Holy sh*t, Britster, that was quite a post! Don't hold your breath on China coming up with anything innovative; there are no companies in China that compare to an innovative firm like Hayes. Maybe someday.

But about those 214 diesel bikes sold to the US Marines, they sure look like the repurposed Kawasaki KLR650s that we've been hearing about for years now. The diesel KLR650 uses a modified version of the Kawasaki engine, not a completely different engine like the one detailed in your post. I'm confused.

    cheers
