This GPS stuff is mind-boggling but a GPS is an essential tool here in China. So, help out a guy who adheres to the KISS philosophy. (Keep It Simple, Stupid! And with heavy emphasis on the stupid part.) I have a good Chinese friend who has a second hand cell phone shop here in Humen and he lets me test phones he has available. I just picked up a Nokia 6710 Navigator from him last night to try out. I am a GPS virgin and kinda nervous about my first time. Anyone using Nokia GPS phones? Advice? I-phone, HTC, Nokia, ??????? Help me out here!

I'm guessing you will be running GoogleMaps as your main navigation program? Just think of it as a tiny paper map with a blue dot that shows where you are. If you want to get into more advanced stuff like tracking and turn by turn instructions, it might be better to pick up a dedicated GPS unit like the Garmin Nuvi.

    Good luck!

Hi robert, how are you getting on with the 6710? I haven't tried it so can't comment, but it seems like a decent phone with spet-by-step navigation already integrated. Does it come with the china maps already loaded into it? Or does it run off google maps?

If you decide not to keep it, an android phone could be a good option too. Google maps is always good if you're not into step-by-step navigation, but you need to pay as you use it since it's always downloading from the network. There are free ways to get around that but it all gets very complicated, i wrote a thread on that here.
