    just get any thing for now minimum 2.2 if you just want a phone to try out android, HTC desire hd if you watch vids, the rest is bling and depends mainly on what apps you want, GPS, etc etc
    does China have 4G?
    HTC evo looks good

    mine is motorola defy because of very good reception in poorer coverage areas, will root it soon though
    rumouris the next iphone 5 (and similar androids i guess) in 6 months will have face recognition so if it isn't you they will brick themselves.
    just don't lend them to the GF accidentally unless it allows more than one 'owner'

    Bummer Rich, sorry to hear that. If you find a good deal on the HTC HD2 Leo, snag it. It's easy to zap it to Android and it's got plenty of screen and processor.

    Everything you ever didn't want to know about phones is here.

    Cheers!

    @Rich

    Right now if I had to walk down to hua qiang bei into the grey markets (or go to the sincere market in Mong Kok East) I'd get an HTC Desire Z, best bang for buck and it has the hardware flip out keyboard, you can pick one up for under 3k right now (probably a "99% new" one similar to how Tom got is last phone), since Tom lost his new phone, I'll probably be bying one of them and I'll sell him my rooted 2.2 Milestone cheap ;)

    P.S is it just me or does Mong Kok sound like a horrid STD.. Girl) Wanna come back to my place? Guy) Sorry, I've got Mong Kok...

    At $50 full service I am not surprised.

    Back to phones, I just threw mine in the bin after the bill arrived. 11 yr old friends daughter picked it out, wiped off the ketchup and has it now because she has more money than me but can't afford an iphone 4! Gone back to my simple 6 year old $30 prepaid, 'no time limit calls and txts and mp3' flip phone. Had forgotten how simple and usable mobiles once were! So easy to get caught up in fashion and fads, I won't bother with android unless I want GPS.

    I have a T-Mobile G2, which is the same hardware as the HTC Desire Z but without the HTC custom software (which I think would be nice to have).

    Anyway, I bought an external battery pack off Amazon and loaded 4 movies on the Micro-SD card... it worked great and was enough to keep me busy for most of my over the Pacific. The battery had more than enough juice for the whole trip, I just ran out of movies!

    I'm with you on the old phones Jape, its been great for a few days not having an multimedia gadget glued to the end of my nose..
    The old generation walk round in China with their backs bent double from years of picking rice.. the next generation will have a 90 degree bend in their necks from iphones and PSP's.
    Anyway back to phones, on chinaV's advise i got a HTC HD2 today, it was cheap enough to just use as a gps and camera, so we'll see how that goes.
