Just checking to see if anyone has new and detailed information rather than second-hand reports on the situation? This is how I remember it from various comments here:

    1. Getting bikes in seems to be a no-no or rather it is possible but has an extra import duty costing as much as a new bike or more, whether you want to cross border into China with one you already own or want to import one into China?

    2. Is there absolutely no touring permit/or entry tax available for a foreigner including China in a journey and going back in and out on a machine?

    3. What about Chinese manufactured m'bikes bought out of the country rather than foreign built machines?

    4. To purchase in China you can be anyone, but how would you get it out?

    5. To get license for riding, China-wide as foreigner you need work permit greater than 6 months duration.

    6. What is the go with International licenses?

    7. Registration of machine varies from area to area/region of domicile but once gained in one region you can travel/pass through any other?

Any thoughts on this, variations, up-to-date info etc. please comment.

Overland travelers can work with a tour agency and a guide to bring a bike into China and explore. The motorcycle's point of origin makes no difference. It costs a lot of money, but many have done it. Tour agencies will usually take care of a temporary drivers license for the trip, as international licenses are useless here.

To purchase a vehicle in your name, or to acquire a license, requires a residence permit. Residence permits are usually one year in duration, you can get one via work, school, or marriage.

If you have a bike and license, you are more or less free to move about the country. There's some rule about registering in hotels, but it's more or less automatically done when you check in. You can't go to areas that have social unrest or a big military presence.

Thoughts.... strange country with a lot of loopholes.

    Cheers!
