Scary prospect about these gangs of bike thieves.
I'm certain a group of builders knicked my first scooter.
Can't prove it obviously but i'm sure it was them. The thieving B@STARDS were working in my neigbours appt so they'd had weeks of scouting my routine. On their last day working in my building, i had my bloody bike stolen. From a guarded compound!! (In a 15 minute window no less, as i nipped home from work to get changed as i usually do)
Sorry about my ranting. Still tears me up to think about it. Haha.
Also euphonius, If the less valuable yellow C plate is stolen can that also be replaced? Or does that only apply for the A plate?

I had my non-registered scooter impounded last summer. Luckily the fapiao was under my name and after much pleading by locals on my behalf, was able to get it back. However, no fapiao, no return. I believe the law is stricter now. This was before the crackdown. My Yamaha was easily the best in the impound. So nice, in fact, someone keyed it, cops dragged it on it's side and used some kind of white-out pen and wrote on the seats to mark it. Still can't get the stuff out.
I don't think the guys will get their bikes back if the bike is grey market.
Regarding stolen bikes, I have heard if you get your bike stolen, you can go to the Shanghai moto market and ask around to see if anyone can find your bike and sell it to you. They are organized gangs. In addition, if you are looking for a particular bike, you can request which bike you want and they can "find" one for you... Those JH600s look awfully nice to me!

03-04-2011, 02:23 AMI've also rode bikes in Wuhan while working there last year. Super lax enforcement compared to here, but still. A buddy of mine wanted a stolen bike and easily found one, complete with fake military plates. After riding around for awhile, it was stolen again from outside his compound. Not a really good idea to buy stolen property, and fake military plates would be asking for trouble.

Anyone have info on what the new A or C Plate Prices are?
I know that the price as of June 15, 2013 were --
A Plate 112,000 RMB
C Plate 14,000 RMB
But I heard they recently went up again - updated info would be nice, or if anyone has the link to the Govt site where they track the monthly / yearly prices....I have the page for the historical prices for CAR plates, but can't find the one for bikes.

127,000 for inner ring
19,000 for outer ring/ most of pudong
I just spent 19k on an outer ring plate for use in pudong.
getting it on monday
the reason the gov doesn't monitor the price is because it is all private sales for these yellow plates now. no more new ones.

I heard a foreigner paid 160K for his 沪A mid October.
