    动物 = Animal

    动 = Move as in 电动车

    物 = stuff as in 物品 (the stuff the bus announcements are always telling you to take care of)

    Same in ancient Greek. Anima - as in Animate and Animal. Anima i think is closely translated to "soul" as well.
