    well that seems inadequate.
Don't you suspect you have a parasitic drain somewhere?

Just saying that I can still push start my bikes but luckily I tend to keep my batteries in good shape. Also I have one of these which I have used a few times.

agreed, a kick starter is a benefit. that said, it would also be a benefit to you to simply take care of the battery. which should add years to it.

How about this, get a electrical cord, cut it in half.
connect the female side of it to the battery, and let it stick out the oil can electrical box.
Then take the male side and attach 2 little clamps.

Then 6 feet or so of cord on that male end wouldn't be too much to carry around, so you can use it to jump start when you need.
(that tractor i said battery lasted 7 years, well i bought it 8 years ago, and this is what i do)
Just use a cord at least the same gauge as you see connected to the starter.

New paint job, I'm not sure how I feel about it yet. (Orange in darker than it looks in the pic)

Nice looking color on your DF. You will have to get some HD stickers for the tank.

I haven't pulled the cylinder head yet, but I'd like to know if anybody has found a parts supplier for the engine before I try to tear it down.

Per requests, here are photos of the spark plug. It's an NGK plug I had replaced for the original plug.

Finally pulled the motor apart yesterday and this is what I found!CylinderHead.jpg

So what's the story on the 170fmm motor?

It seems that the valve keepers were spit out at high rpm, dropping the exhaust valve into the cylinder. That will need a new cylinder and head.Might as well check on the 170 or get the big bore kit and new head.
