Need to know these things more than ever cuz i have even more reason for finding a motor, and more motor if at all possible.

Look what happed on the way home from work tonight...

Yup, the plug porcelain is gone!
Note the impact damage, so either it fell off and banged around in there or something else gave and did it...

Wont know the root cause till its dissected but lets hear your guesses...

Here are the facts, cool night 20°C
Didn't much let it warm up, was in a rush home to beat the rain.
But not unlike usual, i ride full throttle, red lining it with few stops on the 8 mile 15 minute ride, only this time i made it less than 2 miles when it died...
    Pulled over, pushed it back...

Never noticed a white plug or my bike running lean otherwise, even before bumping the main jet to 110 last fall.
And as it was only 3 minutes in im not thinking heat.

It was a NGK DPR8EA 9 plug from autozone, a match for the D8TC I believe.

This guy with a Harley Shovel in what sure looks like a stretched DF250RTB-B that I posted in #4926.

well truth is im at the same place with the savage as i was in the winter, as ive been wasting time rebuilding my old ford.
just had to drop the transmission to get a stuck axel out..

I see now, that does look like the RTB frame.
That was my original intent with getting the LS650, but after measuring it was very tight... and I thought, why destroy a perfectly good bike, when i have everything needed to make another.

That said the only silver lining for me just now trashing the engine would be having to replace it with something worthy like that

    Well here you have it:

    piston:
    https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B-M...it?usp=sharing

    cylinder from top:
    https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B-M...it?usp=sharing

    cylinder from bottom:
    https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B-M...it?usp=sharing

As you can see a hole has been bust through the piston...
The damage seemed more impact than temperature, but its hard to be sure.

Busted exhaust valve. The valve head had either dropped in the transmission, or disintegrated and blew out the exhaust port, but the valve stem remaining was a bit bent indicating impact.

Then of course one of the rods bent as an expected result.

And now for the bad news, i cant crank the engine around, I can go back and forth to certain points about 270° or so... which means either that missing valve head or some of that blown out piston fell in (i cant see how it wouldn't through a gapping hole like that)
Cuz after fishing out a bit of debris out of the exhaust, there remained some shaking in the baffle, I certainly didn't collect enough to reconstruct what is missing so that must be what is jamming the trans...
I didnt find any trace of porcelain either for that matter

Ill have to split the trans open at some point.
I got too many projects going on...

I cant see any reason for this to have happened other than always redlining it... But i suppose some of you do that too...

PS the head gasket is a multi layer metal, just like on my LS650, So as i suggested before, im not so sure if replacing with something thinner and not metal is a good idea as those metal ones are said to be there for the pressure.
Ill measure its thickness later on to see what would be gained with the karopak anyway.

    axa,
Wow. That is some nasty engine damage.
Good time to plug in more motor.
I'm just old school I guess but I don't run any of my machinery at the red line for long.
Like your work on the Savage.

Ive been looking for more motor nearly as long as ive owned the bike... nothing feasible.
I'm likely just going to get the rebuild kit and head for $180 and call it a day...
ill get old waiting to hit the lottery on another LS650...

Out of curiosity i researched the price of a dozen 68mm over pistons, and boring .5 from the cylinder wall...

The place that bored out my LS650 does it for about 35$ and i needed to confirm the 3mm walls could go down to 2.5 without trouble...
But the custom pistons would run near 350 each in small quantities...

400$ + just not that feasible for a 7cc bump.

So far every 170FMM cylinder that I have looked at has a 67mm bore.
