I visited your country several times and I will be happy to visit it again in August. I will visit Xinjiang and will spend 2 weeks in this province. I will be happy to hear your tips whatr to see, where to go etc.
We will travel by our bikes with assist of some 4x4 cars.

    Welcome.
August will be too hot for Xinjiang but the fruits are good.
If you like mountains, northern Xinjiang will be great for you. If you like Gobi desert, go to the south. Have fun.

    Sambor,

Welcome to the site! Maybe you can get a China Moto while you're here.

As Franki said, August is hot but it's fine as long as you keep moving. If you like to travel with dried fruits and nuts then Xinjiang is the place for you. Great kabobs also for real cheap as well a beef rice. Oh and the fresh nan and bagels...don't forget the breads!

I've never been to the northern part of XinJiang but I've seen a good portion of the rest. I would suggest three things.

    1) Take the southern route around the Taklamakan desert into Hotan (Hetian). The road has much less traffic and is more strongly "Weegur".

    2) Cross the Taklamakan desert. It's only about 600 or so km's and it's one of the most amazing roads in the world. Stop in TaZhong for gas and some good ol' fashioned trouble.

    3) Turfan is a cool place if you want to take an easy break adn see some great stuff. There are some landforms called "Yadans" just east and north of Turfan which should be amazing. Jiaohe ancient city is worth a look but in August you better bring a LOT of water.

For some photos and GPS routes, I suggest you check out my Western China KMZ file. It may help a little in the planning.

Let us know how it goes! What bikes will you be riding? Is this an organized tour?

    Hi,
few words about our plan. We will enter China from Kyrgyzstan (Torugart pass, and we will go to Kashgar. Then we are going to drive to Turpan and lake near Urumchi. After that, we will cross Taklamakan by the road you suggested.
Spend one or 2 days in Hotan, and go by Yarkanda towards Taxkurgan. We are not sure if there is any bypass or we have to go by Kashgar...

A sto the bikes: we will drive Honda Africa Twin. It is very reliable bike 750 ccm. Watercooled. Bikes are old, but we know them for looong time.

It is not organized tour. We are friends who travel together every year...
Thank for your files and suggestions.

Kashgar is a fun place. Try to stay at a place called the Noor Bisch in an alley just north of the Id Kah Mosque.

If you can, visit Hotan on a Sunday...go see the animal market and bazzar.

If you're going to Taxkurgan from the south route via Hotan then you must again go back to Kashgar. I understand there are some small routes around Kashgar but the road through Kashgar is the fastest.

You can try to find a shortcut if you want to, but be ready.

You mind if I ask where you and your friends have traveled before?

    Hey CC,

While Sambor is working out his next adventure, I can tell you his report on exploring Indian Himalayas on Africa Twins was absolute classic ADVrider RR with stunning pictures and short and amusing descriptions.

    Same same Central Asia.

    Both well worth the hours.

    Enjoy.
