So I decided to spend the Chinese New year in Taiwan on another bike trip holiday, this time I didn’t need to buy a bike, a friend of mine living there owed me some money, so instead of giving me the money back, he let me use his bike for the week that I was there, so here’s the bike:

It’s a Kymco custom 150cc with virtually no back brakes, crappy clutch, busted speedo, broken starter solenoid and plenty of rust… but the engine still works fine which is I suppose the most important bit :)

Taiwan has to be one of the most awesome places to go riding, vibrant city life (especially the night markets)

Beautiful coastal roads (just about an hour or so out of any major city)

Interesting little coastal villages which serve plenty of fresh seafood if that's your thing (I personally hate seafood)

(had to sit there and watch the beer girl devour sea-roaches)

And of course the best part are the mountain roads (absolutely brilliant)

There's also a large "big bike" culture as evident by these chaps I met on Sunday morning all getting ready for their breakfast run.

Okay, so I took too many pictures to post all in one go, but I also took over 60gigs of video (I'll be uploading the good stuff to youtube sometime this week).. Taiwan is a most awesome riding experience, if you have the chance, go check it out.

Now that's better! Flickr seems to work a treat!

Did you drive northeast out of Taipei? I think I recognize one of the seaside places there, with the line of rocks heading outward. That's where I did my first scuba dives 15 years ago. Someone also nicked my wife's camera there. Bittersweet.

    Nice little bike there.

Where have we seen this beer girl before? (Nice helmet.)

    keep it coming!

Yes actually, we passed the north east part of Taiwan on our way to 九份, we also hit some coast near the middle of Taiwan (I got a little side tracked driving to 台中)

That little bike was knackered, but still a lot of fun to ride.

Thanks, yeah Taiwan is such an amazing little place.. pretty much the best of Asia all wrapped up into one little island in my opinion. Can't wait to get a better bike here on the mainland so that I can join you guys on your next ride :)

I think you deserve that look of disdain! Sea roaches are excellent for virilty, the lady is disappointed in you perhaps?

    Great ride report.

    Serp - Nice pics/awesome report.

Do you or anyone else here know how to rent a big bike (200cc+) in Taiwan?
The Taipei rental place I called said that "foreigners" could only rent scooters 200cc and less.

    * euphonius has the plan to be the first moto to ride from Mainland China into Taiwan (via ferry), so if he works this out my question above my not be so important anymore! ;)
