Thats all correct and shipshape but I think Euphonius was thinking of not having to worry about losing it, as much as usage. Cheap netbooks will do anything but the fast editing of videos on the run, so if that is your main intention of course you get the machine for that, but most people are happy to store images until they get back in the camera and cards, flicking through them and maybe posting one or two small jpg versions while they travel is easy enough.

Even with insurance if available, I would rather lose a netbook than a MacAir or whatever. These days it is the content we have that is important to us, at least as much as the device. And with the Chrome or Ubuntu clouds you are covered.

I know hackers get ingenious as security improves but the next phones and tablets will apparently report where they are if reported stolen and can be turned into unrecoverable bricks remotely.The external parts and components may still have a value to thieves, as with bikes and cars, but they prefer to dispose of the whole item.

I always liked the panasonic toughbook myself. I've seen the cf-29 refurbished going for 300-400 $. Yeah its old school tech, ide, xp, hard drive w no storage, weighs about 10 pounds, but you wont have to worry about it breaking on the road. Even if you buy all the parts to upgrade and max it out, it'll still be less than a mac. I dunno how one of those will handle mac OS, I prefer windows myself and wont touch anything mac.

I have a ASUS Eee 900 that has the solid state disk drive so it is pretty rugged. ASUS quit supporting the Linux that came on this netbook so I installed the EasyPeasy version of Linux and all is well.

Thanks, guys. I've put the project on the back burner for the moment. I don't have a USB disk reader, so want to figure how to put the iso file in bootable form to a thumb drive so I can install OSX from that. EasyPeasy or some similar distro will be my backup if I can't coax OSX onto the little Samsung.
