And that, my friend, is why traffic in China is so bad. One incompetent idiot sending you back to another incompetent idiot.

Feel your pain and hope round 2 goes better.

    Cheers!

Off topic, well not really. How many times a month would you reckon you get pulled over by the police to check to see if you have a license? Im seriously considering investing in a tinted visor for my helmet to prevent racial profiling.

It takes 2 weeks until you get the actual license after passing everything.

Before you head over to Laoshan again, I do hope you have over 90 days left on your visa!?

Are you ethnic Chinese? My sense here in Shanghai that people who look foreign are often given a pass, while Chinese get hit. And when I (Caucasian) get stopped a backslap or handshake and a smile usually shortens the stop, and usually alleviates the need to pull out license and registration.

I don't ride daily so I can give a frequency estimate. But I rarely get stopped when I do ride, and my visor is clear.

No, I'm very white/pale (considering tan salon, haha). Got stopped in front of IKEA on the 4th ring rd. I have jing-b plates which make me legal outside 4th ring, so it had to have been racial profiling.... got off easy though - told me to have a nice day. dont have my license and my bike missed its last inspection (didnt fail, just missed. the guy i bought it from installed black lights under the seat and modified the exhaust. need to get it back to original before next inspection date).

awesome info! gonna be heading to Laoshan myself next month! quick question, are you required to have that slip of paper from the police department? in my 6 years in China i've never registered with the police (not even sure if i'm supposed to), as i have a permit that allows me to enter / leave china as a please over the span of 10 years.. don't really want to have to start registering now.. :S

you NEED that paper from the police station, otherwise they will not allow you to register. that was my problem last time i went to laoshan. going back this weekend with all the right documents.

bummer, even HK citizens need to register? i've never been told to do so.. but i guess it's better to be safe than sorry. will get my arse over to the nearest police station ASAP.
hope you finally get through the whole tedious process this weekend, good luck! :)

on another note.. best place for helmets in Beijing?

    :D

    Ekki,

Rules may indeed be different for holders of HK residence cards, but it's hard to imagine that the authorities won't want to know where you are living. Rules for a drivers licence may also be different for HK residents. Best person to ask is our resident honkie, Franki, though we haven't been hearing much from him lately. Maybe try a PM -- before you open pandora's box by walking into the 派出所 without knowing the lay of the land....

    cheers
