The long-distance ride home for the migrants can be brutal, as the news article focuses on those in Zhejiang and Jiangxi province, which is farther up north relatively speaking. Also this year was the coldest winter in over 30 years for that general area. There is another article about migrants in Guangdong province and their trek home to Guangxi and Sichuan involves milder weather, lots of gas station breaks with juice and chatting, and police escorts to help them out.

Actually, the sheer number of motorcyclists doing this would make the police escorts a necessity. The (relatively) warmer weather would increase the numbers of bikes greatly, and some of them might actually be enjoying the trip. Even so, it's still a very hard trek and the weather isn't exactly tropical down there. They have a hard life and I sympathize with their journey. Reminds me of when I rode a bike from Shanghai to Wuhan a couple years back to start a new job, and then ended up riding back to Shanghai as I wasn't enjoying myself in Wuhan
