So far, this is what I've discovered can be registered / plated in Beijing (besides the usual suspects of Harleys & BMWs). One dealer's prices in Beijing

Yamaha YBR 250 - 25,800 rmb

Honda Fighthawk (150 cc) - 12,800 rmb

That's the Sundiro Honda CBF150. Name taken in inspiration from the nighthawk.

Everything sub 150cc is still registrable under E3 emissions. E3 requires engines over 150cc to be EFI, lower than that carburetor is still OK.

Hi, I'm going to do the license test on tuesday, can't wait to buy a motorbike, I read more and more in mychinamoto and it sounds to be more and more compliacted. I was thinking about Shineray GY-7. I wrote about it to one of the community members (thank you) and he warned me to check if the bike can be legally registered. I guess he ment the C3 rules. Does it mean I can't register this bike? Is there no special way to do it? Or to pimp the bike with some fancy exhaust pipe to do the standards? I'm a total lame about motorcycles so sorry if my question doesn't sound very serious. looking forward to hear from you, thanks!

If the bike doesn't meet China3 standards, there's no amount of pimping you can do to make it pass. It's an administrative approval that is between the manufacturer and the government. There are not many bikes that meet the standard right now, especially those with carburetors rather than electronic fuel injection, so the manufacturers, if they want to keep selling in the China market, have to upgrade their bikes to EFI then submit test results that prove that their updated bikes meet the tougher emissions standards.

The list that Lao Jia Huo compiled above is close to comprehensive, though a number of manufacturers have said they would have new C3 compliant bikes in the market sometime in 2011. Not sure about the Shinerays, though it should not be too hard to find out. Check with your local Beijing dealers.
